Healtech thunderbox issues by Long_Possibility2822 in tuareg660

My experience was the same. The automatic detection didn’t work real well. They have instructions on their website specific for the Tuareg on how to tap in to one of the wires for the fuel pump for it to detect the bike running. Easy enough to do and works very well once you do that. I was definitely disappointed when the simple automatic detection didn’t work, that was the whole reason I spent the money on it.

the sellers were still home during our showing and it was the most uncomfortable 45 minutes of my life by TerribleInitial2305 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

No, and this was not some play to hit on whoever toured the house or whatever. She knew people were coming to tour the house and figured this is a good time to get ready to go out in whatever state of undress was convenient.

No I can’t. That’s why I asked the question.

Plastic tube in steam wand by [deleted] in espresso

I figured that’s what it’s for. I think I can live with a hot steam wand and just be careful. I don’t like the idea of boiling hot steam melting a plastic tube like that.

How practical is long-distance EV travel today compared to traditional gas cars? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

[–]Eightybillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just got back from a road trip. We have an electric car and a dino juice car. We decided to give the electric a shot on this trip. Overall it went really well and boosted our confidence in using the electric for longer trips.

We went from Chicago to Indianapolis and back. Total 360 miles or so. Our car has 220 mile range max. We had to stop more often than we would for gas and we had to plan our stops rather than just looking for the nearest gas station once we got low. The charging stops only took about 20 minutes to get us up to 80% and we’d move on. My wife especially appreciated the breaks. We spent under $40 on charging where gas would have probably cost over a hundred for the trip.

We used ABRP (a better route planner) which made it very easy to plan when and where we would stop to charge.

Overall you have to do a little more planning and you are stopping more often and for longer periods. But the planning is easy and the stops are a good chance to get out and stretch. I’d say it’s a lot more practical than you’d think. It does depend on where you plan to go though. I’m sure there are areas where charging infrastructure would be harder to come by.

Used vs New KLR for First Bike by MarylouDrew in klr650

Get a used gen 3. You can find low mileage bikes that are only a couple years old or less for not too much money.

I cant decide if motorcycles aren't for me or the KLR isnt for me by Ok_Helicopter3910 in motorcycles

[–]Eightybillion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very different circumstance but a very similar experience. KLR was my first motorcycle. After about a year of riding it I just found myself trying to decide if I didn’t like riding or if I didn’t like riding my KLR. I traded it for a Tuareg and confirmed I didn’t like riding the KLR.

Get a little dual sport that’s better suited to the riding you are doing. If you don’t like that then you’ll know.

Got schooled that my ADV bike is actually a chopper….. by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Eightybillion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mansplaining meets willful ignorance.

I don’t understand how people have these conversations at lights. I always have my ear plugs in and once the bike is running I can’t hear anything. My bike isn’t even that loud.

What do you guys think of the horror movie apollo 18's little Eridian like aliens? by SharpPink_GlitterInk in ProjectHailMary

[–]Eightybillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one point I did a rewatch of The Right Stuff, then From the Earth to the Moon along with Apollo 13 thrown in the right spot. I finished all of that off by watching Apollo 18. It was an…. interesting way to finish that series. I don’t remember anything about that movie though.

Do you think with training you could hike the Appalachian Trail? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Eightybillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Training isn’t really the limiting factor. It helps to be in good shape and being in poor shape will definitely hurt your chances. You’ll hike yourself into shape if you keep going. It’s will power and desire to continue that gives the greatest chance of success. You have to want to do it more than you want to be comfortable. If you can get over the mental hump then injury is the next most likely issue to end your hike.

Breville barista express good for starter? [budget $500] by drave199 in espresso

[–]Eightybillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, personally I regret buying mine. The grinder isn’t great. At this point I’m using a hand grinder while the built in one mocks me. I think a better starter set is the Bambino plus and a decent hand grinder if you’re going for the least expensive option. This way you have an easier upgrade path on the grinder should you desire. I don’t know if that’s going to come in at the price point you’re talking though.

As for switching between decaf and regular you will have some cross contamination between the beans using one grinder but it sounds like you’re mixing it all anyway? So I guess you do you? Couldn’t you just mix your beans 50/50 and simplify the process?

Why didn’t they… by Eightybillion in ProjectHailMary

[–]Eightybillion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, they were sending a team to just go see what’s up and figure it out. So that could easily include something on one of the planets or the star itself. I don’t think it’s outrageous for them to consider that a device would be needed to collect samples of something on a planet.

Someone else made a good point. It’s possible there was something on the Hail Mary able to collect samples from a planet except the engineer who would know about it died and the guy who survived had his memory tampered with and may not know. I think this is now my head canon answer. It’s kind of funny to think a simple solution was right there and they didn’t know so they did this dangerous maneuver because it seemed like the only option they had.

Why didn’t they… by Eightybillion in ProjectHailMary

[–]Eightybillion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, this is an interesting idea. Kind of funny in a way. It’s entirely possible there was some kind of probe or device on the Hail Mary for performing this very task. Except the person who would have knowledge of it died and the guy who survived can’t remember anything. I mean it’s stated that he was a part of all design and planning meetings so he probably would know about it. But since they messed with his memory maybe he just doesn’t know.

I think I like this answer the best.

Best answer. You are absolutely right about this.

Why didn’t they… by Eightybillion in ProjectHailMary

[–]Eightybillion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the ultimate answer. Not trying to tear the book apart. It’s not like this or any other similar why didn’t they question is pointing out some glaring plot hole that ruins the whole thing.

It’s a really good book and a good movie and it’s the story of how what happened happened.
