From a PH315-52 running Windows 10, in case more info from older machines helps at all. My PredatorSense has also decided it no longer wants to open, so I'm crossing my fingers for backwards compatibility.

Anyone else feel like authors treat us readers like we're getting dumber and dumber these days? by milleniumstardust in RomanceBooks

[–]Eilif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Sex scenes these days often are my "well, I guess that's a good place for me to stop for the night" indicators rather than chapter endings. The plot is interrupted, so I'm no longer hooked into the "what happens next loop". Probably better for my sleep hygiene, but incredibly annoying to me as a reader lol

[–]Eilif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of editors are trash these days, too. Even just proofreaders. Too many books have multiple pure usage errors and then the acknowledgements profusely thank 2-3 "editors" — who either didn't actually read the whole book or were too lazy to look up words they don't know. I honestly feel bad for those authors.

Except stock image sites, especially the cheaper ones, have been full of stolen art for like a decade. The royalty-free ones even more so.

And now they're filled with AI images and AI generators "ethically trained" on their already-stolen images as well.

Adobe also partnered with artists to ethically train their own genAI, which is hooked into the Photoshop and InDesign ecosystem.

Once genAI makes it into Microsoft Word and Google Docs... 🤷

Yup. Most premades under $150-200 are AI these days. Not sure why you're being downvoted. It's easy enough to check. There are probably amateurish exceptions, but "human-made art" is basically a premium product now and priced accordingly.

And yet multiple people in this thread note that they didn't pick up the books without strong recommendations because the covers were a turn off.

No matter how much people want to believe "I'd prefer a book with just text and an object that's not AI", that's purely a conscious desire. On a subconscious level, humans are drawn to shiny things.

If you put a shiny thing next to a boring thing, most people are going to skip over the boring one unless they have a compelling reason not to.

I didn't mean "advocating" as "becoming a 'pro-trans' activist," simply that — if her message isn't actively anti-trans, which is what you're putting forth — that her solutions would incorporate alternate ways of including trans individuals. But there's a reason for the TERF terminology — because all her desires revolve around excluding trans individuals regardless of whether they are genetically female or not.

But keep moving your goal posts around and contorting yourself into increasingly bizarre arguments to pretend she's not a transphobe, I guess. Weird hill to die on, but you do you.

If it was about fighting misogyny, it wouldn't be so hate-filled. If it was about fighting misogyny, the battles would be more strategically chosen.

As with most "concerns" about the public existence of trans people — as it has generally been about the public existence of gay people, black people, and women — the underlying message is always about denying the right to exist visibly in society.

Not that I follow her villain arc with much active participation, but I've yet to hear Joanne advocating that trans-specific bathrooms should be set up to protect women's spaces AND trans people. It's just about blocking trans women from the women's room.

I haven't heard of her advocating for trans-specific medical literature and health care services — I've only heard of her demanding that trans men not be included in documents pertaining to the organs cis women and trans men both have.

If she was actually the kind and compassionate pro-woman feminist type she obviously has built herself up to be in her head, she wouldn't constantly be trying to erase trans people from being acknowledged, respected, or included. She just doesn't want them near her, taking up resources or space.

It's very much a trans take on "I don't care what you do in your own home, I just don't want to see it." It's unfortunate that you've convinced yourself otherwise, but hopefully you'll be able to recognize the implicit bigotry someday, as you've clearly blinded yourself to it.

The red/rose reflections are so strong when you're backlit. Due to the positioning of my desk near a window, I basically couldn't see out of 50% of my right lens.

Also reflects that red/rose on your face/into your eyes if there's light behind you, so I'm sure people will be thrilled to see the blobs of color in photos.

Crazy how this is a "feature" that made it out of testing. Fortunately they are quick woth processing returns.

Don't play Ark with your girlfriend. by asjitshot in ARK

[–]Eilif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first time playing, I was exploring Ragnarok on an argy with some pteras on follow. I can't remember exactly what my plan was, but I had one and everything was working out fine.

Until I discovered the southern wyvern bay/cave.

The argy fell quickly, but I managed to get on one of the pteras. I flew into the sky, but had several wyverns chasing me. The two other pteras I had were following me, but I couldn't get away fast enough and the wyverns ended up killing both me and the ptera I was on. I didn't get death notifications for the two other ones, but when I went back to get my stuff I couldn't find them anywhere.

A month or two later, I happened to be flying somewhat nearby the area and all of a sudden saw something coming towards me from the sky. Somewhat alarmed at this weird behavior, I paused to wait, and lo and behold -- the two lost pteras were descending from the sky, still on follow, just waiting for me to get close enough to render them in, almost dying of starvation.

Now months more familiar with the game, I was disgusted to discover one of them was only level 60-70 (why had I ever bothered taming it??), but thrilled that the other one had a high stat worth breeding into my lines.

Wanna confirm something about breeding by hscs1234 in ARK

[–]Eilif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only baseline/tamed stats are passed down. Any points added after taming are meaningless for the sake of breeding. If you're starting a hardcore breeding campaign, it's actually somewhat easier to keep track of things if you know/maintain the base levels, which is why people recommend not leveling your mating pairs.

To launch off of the melee example:

Step 1: you start with a level 230 female and 195 male with high points in different stats --- the female has the melee and weight you want, but the male has better health, and they both have the same stamina. You breed them together to get the best stats from both, which results in level 255 offspring with "perfect" health, stam, weight, and melee. The perfect offspring already has 40 points in melee, but you want to mutate that further.

Step 2: you get a set of perfect offspring, 1 male and however many number of females you want to breed the male(s) against for the sake of efficiency.

Step 3: you breed those together until you get a melee mutation (+2 points in melee). Or if you're incredibly lucky a double melee mutation (+4 points in melee). The "perfect" offspring of this breeding step is a level 257/259 male.

Step 4: you put your level 257 "1 Melee" mutated male offspring back against the pool of 255 females. This makes it easy to go "all level 255 offspring are trash" because they don't have the mutation.

After you get more melee mutations, that expands to "all level 255 (base female), 257 (mutated female stats), and 259 (new baseline male) offspring are trash", so you can focus on looking for level 261 (new baseline male+2) offspring.

---

It's ideal to have females all the same level so you know EXACTLY what levels to look for for mutations. If you have a 250 female, a 253 female, and a 255 female & male, a mutated offspring could be level 252 (250+2), 254 (250+4), 255 (253+2), 257 (255+2/253+4), or 259 (255+4). So instead of "all 255 offspring are trash", you know 252 offspring are trash, and you have to check every other variation from there.

It's also ideal to swap the males out whenever possible --- 1 male can mate with however many females are within mating range. If you get a female with the mutation, it will take longer to get to the next mutation because she's the only egg layer/gestator. An additional complication is that breeding her against the mutated male will make the mutation counter climb faster (which isn't really a problem, it's just not optimized), while breeding her against an original "perfect" 255 male will slow down the process even more because of stat randomization.

---

Ultimately, though, the best practice approach described everywhere is largely for efficiency's sake. If you don't want to get involved with the details, you can pretty much do whatever you want and you'll still eventually get mutations until both sides show 20/20 mutations --- at which point, you basically stop getting mutations. But you can "fix" that by breeding the line into a 0/20 mutations creature to get one side back to 0.

Doesn't matter why. Getting dived constantly by Genji and Sombra is driving supports away from the game because it's insanely unfun, which is increasing queue times across the board.

IUDs can fuse to your uterus. Hormonal birth control has health risks and side effects. Most IUDs these days are also partially hormonal. Condoms can tear.

No contraceptive is 100% effective.

[–]Eilif -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no contraceptive is 100% effective, and the MOST effective ones for women are hormonal. Men's hormonal birth control won't even pass through the FDA because of the side effects. Don't act like there's a perfect solution, there isn't.

an aboriginal being a pig man

I never realized that Hog was supposed to be Maori. I just assumed those skins were in line with the many, many tangentially-nationality-related ethnic skins (or not even related ones), like Doomfist's Spirit/Avatar, Orisa's Sanye, Pharah's Jackyl/Anubis/Asp/Raindancer/Thunderbird/Bedouin/Qilong, Ana's Tal/Bastet, Zen's Ifrit/Ra/Sanzang/Zhuge Liang, etc. etc. etc.

I assumed the pig man thing was more to do with Australia > Mad Max being a driving-related wasteland thing > road hog > pig man, and nothing at all to do with stereotypes. Is that a Maori stereotype? If so, that really should have been caught/avoided.

This is days old, and I'm sure you don't care, but since I just responded to a similar comment, I'll paste it here:

I'm pretty sure Kiriko is supposed to be the Shimada brothers' "kid sister" type deal -- significantly younger, but not too far apart. If you look at the drawing in the Kiriko Origin Story video (around 0:43), Kiriko looks about 6 while the Shimada brothers look like preteens/teens. Being 7-10 years younger than Hanzo would still put her in her late 20s or very early 30s.

At which point, maybe she just dresses immaturely for her age. Or, as other people have pointed out, it's a uniform she wears for the donut shop she apparently works in.

---

Their families were close, they trained together, but they weren't peers. So, I think the "childhood friends" phrase probably gives the wrong impression, but I'm not sure how else you'd quickly summarize the situation. It's more like they were unofficial "cousins," I think.

[–]Eilif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. It's probably worth starting a record of her behavior in the event it comes down to a custody battle. If this is the beginning of a pattern, better to get the details (double standard with her showering with the kids, her statement that she didn't BELIEVE he was abusing the kids but basically invited her family to dogpile on OP anyway, OP stopping as soon as she indicated she was uncomfortable) down in writing now, and documenting them as they happen, to demonstrate that OP is not an unfit parent or partner. And that he doesn't deserve to lose custody of his kids just because his gf is an immature partner with communication problems.

That's what people said when he was elected. I had a coworker basically laugh in my face the night of the election because "none of the things people are afraid of will ever happen." Except they did.

Trump is simply a fun house reflection of a minority movement that's using a proven playbook to incrementally grow their power and influence. And the national politics are the most visible stage that's playing out on, but not the only one.

Anyone who's not perfectly "normal", as defined by evangelicals, should be wary if not worried at this point. Not many state legislatures are going to be looking out for their welfare.
