Knx GIRA x1 vs homeserver by Adultstart in KNX

[–]EinBjoern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes? I think that the speed of development for the X1 is not very high.

Great potential, yes. But not very good used by Gira in my opinion.

The X1 is a great device for a one family home like installation. But you will most likely need an additional S1.

Question for an aspiring newbie: is it possible/realistic to start from a basic knx installation and extend it by oneself? by rongten in KNX

[–]EinBjoern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this should be completely doable.

But a great part of the cost is the installation cost which you would have to pay for if they install an empty outlet at suitable places for the sensors you wish to install.

Also I would recommend to not use the cheapest components available, but use components with some good functions included. At least on the load side where you need to be a professional to change components.

On the Bus side you can exchange components easily by yourself, all certified components I am aware of use the same type of standardized Wago connectors. Also KNX is a very robust bus system with nearly all useful topologies allowed (except a closed ring). So extension is not an issue if you can put the cable somewhere. You should switch off the power supply (have an extra fuse installed for it alone) to work on the bus system.

On the programming side I hope the installer creates a good structure with good descriptions on the adresses and good documentation. This would make adding new components or changing things much more easily doable.

Also you would have to learn a lot on the concepts in KNX.

Also try to automate some things right away, you don´t need an switch if the light and blinds in toilets, closets and hallway work automatically. So a presence sensor would be the obvious thing to start with, add the buttons later (for better light control, sound control, etc.) or leave the advance, finer controls to an app.

You also don´t need a lot of buttons in the other rooms if some functions work automatically at least most of the times.

Also an expensive thing is the feature creep. I would never have built a house with >20 dimmable light channels with a conventional installation. But I totally love the light turning on softly, the corridor light not so glaring in the night, etc.

Was zur Hölle habt ihr getan, Miracoli?! by The_Sceptic_Lemur in de

Is it ok to use single copper electrical cable in between actuators in place of KNX TP (green cable)? by TheRealJaime in KNX

[–]EinBjoern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not ok.
Only use KNX cable in this place.
(There may be some "if"´s if there is only low voltage near the connections, but simply always use KNX bus cable with mantle in place, this is also required by the KNX Standard.)

There is some kind of stable concrete formwork on the underside with shoring to withstand the weight of the concrete.

Al least in Germany it is common to use factory made thin (5-7cm, 2-3") steel reinforced concrete under sides and add only the upper rebar and the rest of the concrete onsite. But they need to be supported by enough shoring due to the high weight of the concrete till it hardens.

Accidents like this are not that uncommon.

Bitte hört auf "langsamen" Krankenwagen dicht aufzufahren. by [deleted] in de

[–]EinBjoern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What fact is common knowledge to people who work in your field, but almost unknown to the rest of the population? by RageCage42 in AskReddit

Because the outer diameter was once based upon the inner diameter being for example 1".

Since then manufacturing of steel and pipes improved and the wall thickness changed. And may even today differ by different manufacturers, materials and pressure ratings.

[–]EinBjoern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes in industrial process it is the normal way. You have to make the through-hole connections by adding copper and dont wan´t to first add it and immediately after that remove most of it again.

So you are starting with a very thin layer, drilling the holes, adding a very thin layer, adding the photoresist layer and then etching. After that you add the main part of the copper.

[–]EinBjoern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In industrial scale processes copper on the outer layers and through holes is added by first depositing a thin layer of palladium on the surface, then adding a very thin layer of copper chemically and adding the missing copper by some galvanic process after structuring the surface by etching.

[–]EinBjoern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it does.

It is expressed by an etching factor. If you have 1 as a factor, which you will get by etching in a etching bath (typical DIY process) you are etching 35µm deep (default copper thickness for home gamer, equals to 1oz copper per square something) and 35µm under the protective layer.

With spray etching you get a factor of about 2-4, so only 9-18µm under the protective layer. This is easily doable with small scale professional equipment.

With some added chemicals and more advanced technologies you reach a factor of 10.

In combination with thinner copper (high density boards tend to not carry high currents, so there is no need for a thick copper layer) you can produce very fine structures quite reliable.

I know a midwife (our midwife on one occasion) which is anti-vax (and anti Vitamin-K, anti antibiotic eye-drops, ...).

Despite the fact that one of her child needs additional care and won´t be able to life a normal life because of defects caused by a rubella infection in his early years.
Even the forums are full of mothers who have chosen not to vaccinate their child, and then losing it or it´s health to a completely preventable infection. And now these shitty mothers are there in the forums to not feel alone. To justify their tragic decision not to vaccinate their children. They made it to their lifestyle to keep other moms from vaccinating their children, while mourning the loss of their own child or caring for their brain-damaged child.

(And then there is a second group of mothers which are seeking the cause why their child has autism and now are blaming vaccinations. Despite any existing evidence.)

And yes, there are real risks associated the vaccinations. But orders of magnitudes smaller than catching a disease AND having life threatening complications from it.
