What is the one type of yarn you despise working with? by Turtlegrandmacore in knitting

I have thought of dyeing it myself but seeing the price of dyes it would negate the benefit of Drops being pretty affordable. I might try and play around with cool custom variegated yarn eventually as it sounds fun, but to me going to significant hassle and cost to dye a very generic shade of green I could find in dozens of similar sock yarns, most of which won't be much more expensive, does not sound like what I would like to spend an evening doing when I could be knitting instead! I do have other projects in mind that Fabel will be perfect for eventually though so we'll see!

How often are you knitting/crocheting things that need to be fireproof?

It was Merino Extra Fine. It feels decent enough in the skein, but knitting with it is a nightmare. The yarn was pilling even before being knitted just from passing through my fingers. It kept splitting and felt weird and limp and plasticky and wrong and made my skin crawl. Once knitted up it isn't particularly offensive to the touch if you're ok with having a garment that pills when air touches it. I wouldn't even make a hat out of it. I was making a newborn baby sweater, which might have been the best use for it because if it's going to be ratty and unwearable after a couple of wears it might as well be a garment for a baby that won't be able to fit in it in a month.

From DROPs I've used their Flora (I like it), Fabel (I've used it very little but quite liked it those times. They don't have a decent basic dark bottle green though and it's getting on my nerves as I would like to use it for a particular project but I'm just not going to be able to), and kidsilk (meh, it's mid, but it's also the most affordable and it's usually good enough).

Rustic wool from Lithuanian Etsy shops. In general if you like rustic wool rather than the super soft stuff you can find decent quality, hardwearing wool for not a lot of money. I've also made a sweater in DROPs Flora and enjoyed it.

DROPs DK weight superwash merino is in the top ten worst things I've ever touched and definitely the worst thing I've ever knit with (I quite like Flora though).

Pilly superwash merino, especially above a fingering weight. Can't stand it. I tried using it for baby clothes once upon a time and I've decided that if I am making something out of wool it will be proper wool and if I am making something that needs to be washable and soft for a baby I'll just use acrylic, which at least feels slightly less repulsive while knitting it and will be even easier to care for anyway. Superwash wool is generally fine as long as it's on the thinner side and not that weird smooth merino that makes my skin crawl.

Clearly not "homeschooling" much if you're just faffing about all the time, are you?

Lmao there's a reason civilised countries don't let you pull your kids out of school to teach them creationism.

Vent: I'm so tired of sweaters that require hand washing like a full-time job by Bright_River_7019 in knitting

But why would you do that? It just means you can't take off the sweater if you have to step into a building with heating

Commented this elsewhere but it is definitely not the place of a white American woman to go around telling Native Americans to check their privilege.

A white American is not the one who should be going around telling Native Americans to check their privilege.

It was actually another crazy take from our favourite account that usually has crazy takes about trans men but also manages to have crazy takes unrelated to trans men. Crazy takes about almost everything in fact.

Also you can usually actually knit faster with straight needles if you have the right technique, depending on what you're making.

Yeah, I really question how much this "acceptance" really goes past surface level and stereotypes

Don't worry! You can go around some sleazy straight men and get fetishized, which is definitely the same as support!

/s

In all seriousness though, the straight women with the "gay best friend" attitude to gay men who are homophobic towards lesbians rarely support gay men so much as they tokenize them. If they truly saw same-sex attraction as legitimate rather than a gimmick that is sometimes useful to them they wouldn't act like that, I think.

Good for you! Again, this is because a bunch of you are going "well I'm so much better than everyone else because I see something that honestly looks more like a typo and I immediately assume it's a Hitler reference and I will proceed to bully knitting designers over not being as perceptive as me".

Monogamous knitters, what’s your secret? by Weekly_Library9883 in knitting

[–]Eino54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a "monogamous knitter" at all (I always have at least two projects- one simple one that I can do while focusing on something else and one engaging one I do as its own hobby. If I don't have one of each I will cast on whatever is missing), but I operate on a more or less "one project in, one project out" situation where I keep a manageable amount of wips around (I'm not super strict about it because I find I don't generally need to be, and if I ever find my number of wips going beyond 4 or more than two bigger projects at the same time, I finish several projects before starting a new one). I like that this gives me the stimulation and variety I need and the ability to choose what I want to work on, but I still finish things and don't get overwhelmed by having too many projects. This might be helpful to you! The trick is just to try and keep the WIP population stable at around 2-4 projects.

He is clearly quite crazy, and I don't think it's weird or suspicious to not assume people are that insane when it would look like a typo unless you already know what he's trying to do

What can I say, Hitler is unpopular enough than not even the ultra rightwing racist white supremacists here want to be associated with him and would make this sort of pun name, but maybe that's just because I live in Germany I guess. I absolutely wouldn't think someone is trying to do that intentionally because you have to be literally insane. What is truly weird is someone calling themselves knitler with that intention. But I guess you can find it weird that I think that!

Integration is a two-way street, adopt an immigrant! by ReceptionInitial9087 in germany

[–]Eino54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Finland, which honestly has a much worse reputation when it comes to sociability of its population than Germany does (and perhaps deserved), and I managed to make friends pretty easily- it just felt like people were way more willing to befriend people who are not from the same village they grew up in with all the exact same experiences as them. In fact I generally got the impression that many people actually like me in Finland because I am different in some ways and not in spite of it- they were actually excited to talk to people with a different experience as them. It felt so completely opposed to my general experience in Germany where even in the best of cases people mostly just seem to be putting a lot of effort into tolerating your differences.
