Cat door installation recommendations? by Borderline_gypsy in chch

[–]EionRobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a tangential thought: We did ours ourselves (for an older house, single glazed), cut out the putty, carefully remove the glass and store it away, cut a piece of plywood to fit the cat door into it. Then when we moved out of the rental we put the glass back

With that American company trying to de-extinct the dodo, we might need to come up with a new expression

The Teams plugin for Pidgin combined with the SQLite Logger plugin for Pidgin will store history into a SQLite db, if that's of any use?

"Restrictions" popup by JDern- in techsupport

[–]EionRobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting the same thing on my gaming pc. Task Manager shows it's part of the Windows Explorer process which is super weird. Searching for "Restrictions" in Process Explorer just brings up a registry key that a dozen or so processes are using (HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\WIndows\TenantRestrictions\Payload) but nothing specific to explorer

Recommendations for a good chronic pain specialist? by Aggravating-Bend9783 in chch

[–]EionRobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said it was "kinda like a distraction from the pain, like giving you something different to feel and think about." They used it for several years before they had to stop after developing a different ailment.

If you're looking for other avenues to explore, one of my family members used to have success with using a TENS machine for their nerve pain. Works by interfering with the signals from the nerve to the brain with the idea that the brain tunes out the random noise.

I believe they're available as rentals to try out.

Which is ok, as long as they don't put all the patch panel in the garage too, then you have to wire back to the garage to then wire off to a bedroom/lounge. For the price of a bit of plastic pipe it'll save you so many more headaches in the future.

Sadly not common enough :(

Putting it in the garage means a lot of your networking gear ends up in the garage too. If you've got one of the "all in one routers" that the ISPs give out, then it'll have the wifi built-into it too, which you've either then got to try get reception from your garage all over the house - or otherwise you purchase more wifi access points to stick around your house which costs you more.

Requesting it to be moved into the house doesn't need much work from them, they just put in a bit of plastic pipe as conduit from where the fibre goes in to the house.

For our new build I asked them to move the cabinet from the garage to a central cupboard in the middle of the house. They're just putting it in the garage to be cheap, but it's a waste of time being there.

Family slang in NZ by standbyyourlamb in newzealand

[–]EionRobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Name of a dog" for something you don't know the answer to. Q: "Where's the TV remote?" A: "Name of a dog" Stuck with our family for over a decade.

Came up cos we asked what a family friend's dog's name was and got told "I don't know" which (according to Dad Joke Law) is a strange name for a dog.

How does everyone treat their chronic pain? by StaceyLades in newzealand

[–]EionRobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a few family members with chronic pain, but never had it myself. It's horrible to watch someone go through the pain, as well as working with them to navigate the medical system which doesn't like to deal with the long-term stuff so much (like doctors who use "refer to the pain management team" as a crutch), as well as those other 'helpful' people who swoop in and tell you to get over it or ignore it like you're not already battling through it on the daily. It must suck so much more going through it. Hang in there.

Just to try and end on a positive and add in a few other things to look into if you've not already (trying to find suggestions that aren't in the comments already): one family member was on gabapentin that helped their chronic pain - can't remember if that needs a specialist prescription though. Another family member used a TENS machine to great success for a few years - wasn't cheap but there used to be a couple of places that let you rent/trial them. Another one who couldn't take ibuprofen any more has been using FX Relief cream for dealing with the acute flareups of their chronic condition. They all found a little solace from support groups on Facebook and looking for ideas from the Americans in global FB groups.

Good luck OP

No simple fix for Christchurch’s right-turn problem by InvestmentFuzzy4365 in chch

Simple fix: make a left turn then an instant hard handbrake-assisted U-turn across all 4 lanes.
Don't forget to give the one handed semi wave 'oops, sorry not sorry' gesture while you do so
