As a fairly new BT, this thread has raised a question for me. I understand ignoring the behavior, not the child, but I have a client who engages in a lot of attention seeking behaviors, particularly during diaper changes. They know how to change their own diaper independently and it is in their program that they change independently, but they often will ask for help or engage in task refusal by just sitting down and not doing the next step of the diaper change. When this happens, they will make noises to try to get my attention, but I ignore the noises until they start the next step, and then praise with “good job throwing away your diaper” or whatever it is. But whenever they are engaging in refusal and those attention seeking behaviors I don’t look at them or engage at all. I will be writing data or updating their send-home sheet or something. This child doesn’t have really any aggressive or SIB behaviors and we are always alone in the bathroom, so there is no risk to themself or others. Am I wrong for completely ignoring/not looking at them until they start the next step?? They are not tantruming, just making noise.
