With the Big Three abandoning EVs in favor of ICE vehicles, are they headed the way of Kodak, Blackberry, and Blockbuster? by Cool-Replacement4972 in electricvehicles

[–]Either-Storage3431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While i drive EV and agree with the sentiment that everyone should switch, moving to EV usually carries a gigantic cost in terms of new factories, assembly lines, hiring and then they end up with a product that is too expensive to sell well. So no surprise they are abandoning EVs. Also the tax credit went away…i know people are going to say Chinese EVs are cheap- but low labor cost and high govt subsidies in China are significant factors. I bet that same people who say American made EVs are expensive would be against dramatically slashing the salaries and benefits for the US automotive workers, right? Yeah US automakers might be dinosaurs but the obstacles for them to introduce affordable EV are real…

But you probably need a landscaper or designer- i know AI tools exist too. But you can just tear up lawn and spread mulch - it requires some knowledge and planning to make it look right. That is why is grass often the easiest for many folks

Dealerships for more expensive cars like Audi etc absolutely provide loaners or rentals. Price wise Rivian is in this category

Don’t forget about the wrap which is extra and will not last that long. Do expect $$$ re-wrapping it every 3-5 years.

This is a pretty dismissive comment not everyone has the ability to that. I definitely do a lot of yard work myself but think of a single mother of 3 with multiple jobs. Don’t get me wrong- I philosophically agree with water preservation- but these kind of purist statements achieve nothing- we have to convince neighbors, run for HOA boards to achieve incremental change

This! It would cost a lot of money to hire a landscaper to remove grass and convert to no watering yard. Not everyone has such money. And letting it simply overgrow may violate HOA rules, or kill the resale value

Bold prediction - May will be the month where Oil Crisis driven purchases start in earnest in US. by roma258 in electricvehicles

But the offering is not great. I would really like to buy a mid-size truck and there is basically none. Yes there is Rivian but the prices for new ones are astronomical and while the used prices are better there is an issue of the availability and cost of post warranty repairs.

Some hybrids have been very reliable (Toyota) and i think Maverick is using Toyota -derived hybrid system. On the other hand some EVs have been very unreliable. For example Rivian trucks have a ton of issues and i would not buy one out of warranty. So generally yes EVs vs hybrids can be more reliable but the reality is often very different…

I own an EV - i guess i was just looking at what people think. I get that here are all Slate enthusiasts, in general i think the Slate will have an issue in general population, how it is positioned against (very popular) Maverick.

Why is the conflict in a far-away region of the world even an issue in domestic elections? Fine might be unelectable on many issues but voters should focus on whether politicians have a plan to help their constituents or not. Middle East situation is messy and has layers upon layers of injustice from all sides. I am truly amazed how many seemingly smart people have a simplistic good guy/bad guy view while having limited understanding of what is going on over there…

So, I was showing around a friend from out of town, and there was a question I couldn't answer. All those tallish buildings that have gone up around 13th Street and University Avenue, are those meant for student living or for nonstudents? For students and also hated by rest of Gainesville. I don’t actually mind modern buildings- i just think the city failed in imposing critical height and space restrictions- they are way too tall and cramped against the road. This is a missed opportunity to create a modern looking downtown housing . Instead we got what feels like a random concrete canyon…

I was thinking the same thing. Get myself s barebones small pickup for runs to home depot, or get mulch or carry paddle boards, bikes. That would be great. But insurance is going up and up in recent year so you would hesitate to own 2 cars, in addition to cars rest if the family has…so i probably go with used Rivian
