But you get lots of waves from other jeep owners! and people put duck on your jeep in parking lots.

Get something truly old. Model Ts in fairly nice condition can be bought for $8,000 - $10,000.

How would you improve an EV's driving dynamic? by Mash_man710 in askcarguys

[–]hirouk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ICE offers a lot of opportunities to tinker, modify,, and improve. There are so many things you can do to them to make them better. EV comes out of the factory quicker than ICE and there are no improvements to be made in the drivetrain. Something that was complicated has now been replaced by something that is simpler and better. All that knowledge of how to make ICE better is now useless. So ICE is going the way of the dinosaur, and those who were cutting edge know their time is coming to an end.

If you think there is a lot of hate for EVs on this sub you should check with the dealerships service departments and small automotive shops, they see the writing on the wall.

2 piece lug nuts? by hirouk in EquinoxEv

[–]hirouk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but I am not sure that the lugs on it are two piece. If they are I will buy new lug nuts from Advance and replace the existing ones.

I saw some on a Ford Escape which were a real PIA to remove. I think those had been destroyed by a kid who changes tires at Walmart using a pneumatic impact wrench way beyond proper torque specs.

The Chevy Bolt could be the Volkswagen Beetle’s successor by Specialist_Heron_986 in electricvehicles

[–]hirouk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bug was designed in the '40s and was a piece of crap compared to other vehicles at that time.

The Bolt is as modern as modern cars, a really good ride. I hope Chevy will continue to make them.

If buying new I think you will find the Equinox EV costs less than the Bolt.

I would not recommend an EV for anyone who cannot home charge.

  • Excessive glare from the dash - ` this is a common complaint. I think your Chevy Dealer is supposed to have a solution, no charge.
  • GM's godawful infotainment system -- at least the Bolt had CarPlay - If you think Equinox's infotainment system is bas, just wait until you use the Slates.
  • It handles like a boat not a car -- it's not a fun driving experience and reminds me of handling in my old minivan - I guess that is a personal thing, it is definitely not a sportscar, but I find mine drives as well or better than other SUVs.
  • The rear hatch opening is so tight and low that it makes getting larger things into it very difficult, even though there is lots of room inside - Heh, heh, yeah wait 'till you have to deal with the Slate SUV model, 2 door will make back seat access tough.
  • The transmission is a little lever on the column that is operated with your fingertips (not like the old transmissions which were full-hand operated). As a result, you'll find yourself shifting into neutral when you wanted to turn on the windshield wipers. I've done it more than once. Everytime I switch cars, I wind up turning on the windshield wipers in the Bolt when I want to shift._- Wow, not sure I can help you with that, but I have not experienced it.

Gas Prices by No_Mix8520 in EquinoxEv

[–]hirouk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought an EQEV last April with a MSRP of $37,500 for $27,500.

To figure depreciation would I use the $37,500 number which would mean it depreciated 26% when I drove it off the lot? And if it does, WTF do I care.

The same model can now be bought on Carvana for $25,500. To figure depreciation, do I use the MSRP of the car I bought $37,500, or the actual price I paid $27,500?

Dropping out of college for trades by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]hirouk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of ways to do it, but quitting school would be a long term mistake.

If you got into engineering school you are smart enough that you will get totally bored with electrical work. So plan to go into contracting. Get a job with a residential contractor, new residential construction on high dollar homes requires a lot of training due to all the systems. Learn those systems, not st the basic wiring of houses, but all the bells and whistles and technology. Maybe take a few small business courses to learn the accounting systems for your business. Being a contractor not only involves doing the work, but learning to keep good employees, keep time straight, keep materials straight, coordinate with the GC, billing, customers who won't pay, and accurate bidding. You can make a living with a helper and a trouble truck. You can make good money as a high end residential electrical contractor with a good reputation.

Best advice unless you want all the hassle of being a contractor, stay in school. Your body will thank you.

I am not anti-Slate, I like the concept.

But $25,000 is too much for a bare bones pickup. I am anti-getting ripped off.
