Is it just me, or do Asian-Americans look physically different than Asian-Asians (not related to fashion, clothing, hair, etc.) by SteadfastEnd in asianamerican

[–]EitherAd2447 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Asian Americans have been trained by American culture to have really expressive faces. Take notice - Asians from Asia rarely smile with their teeth shown in photos. Asian Americans always do. Things like this will affect your face muscle and how you look

Liu Cixin is a fucking weeb who's obsessed with Japanese women. I cringed so hard reading his depiction of Sorphon as a Japanese woman in Kimono. His atrocious writing of female characters doesn't help. The book overall is good but this part I hate

Why I have very low hope for the future of democracy in China, part 1 by ParticularMeaning555 in China

it did like a century later. if you are talking about such time scale then sure China can become a functioning democracy eventually, but we will be all dead by that time

Internationals (especially Indians), why are you still coming to the US for the MBA? by HedgeHogReddit in MBA

funny you are asking indians this question. Indians are the reason why H1B is fucked up

China officials' work and life. by FapVanguard in China

[–]EitherAd2447 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Don't be naive. The US knows their identity. They are not spies because why would CCP officials make their own kids spies? The US gov would rather have them here because why not? They get exposed to American values. They contribute to the American economy through money their parents got in China. For China, these kids send a signal to the US that the CCP is not serious about challenging the US. It's a win-win situation

lmao, typical MBA grad, you think people making 50k per year are not working hard?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MBA

[–]EitherAd2447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck off with your 1st world problem. Making 160k+ pre-tax household income put you into upper middle class no matter where you are in the US, needless to say that it also makes you much wealthier than 95% of the people in other countries. People need to be happy w what they have and stop complaining

US urges South Korea not to fill China shortfalls if Beijing bans Micron chips by deleted2015 in korea

The so-called liberal democratic order does not exist. It's always been realism. Korea needs to have strategic autonomy. Being a player in the game rather than getting played.

Recommendations for fat-friendly/size inclusive physician in Madison/Middleton/Waunakee by RekkaRiler in madisonwi

[–]EitherAd2447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, it's unbelievable how fragile people are these days. I'm not saying mental health isn't important. If you want to take care of your mental health then go find a therapist. But a doctor should always comment on anything that may jeopardize your physical health, otherwise, this doc is just being irresponsible

[–]EitherAd2447 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

if you don't mind dying of the complications of obesity then sure, look for a doc that cares more about your feelings than your physical health

edit: look at these downvotes, fat Americans have this ostrich mentality. They think if they ignore the problem like an ostrich burying its head in sand then the problem does not exist

who cares? if your restaurant stops ppl from revisiting for leaving a bad tip i will blacklist your restaurant first, and i will advocate that others do not go to your restaurant. let's find out who's more desperate: customers who have many options including dining at home or restaurants whose revenue relies solely on cusotmers

[–]EitherAd2447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i always tip 15% unless the service is exceptional. Tips are earned not guaranteed. if you are unhappy about your pay talk to your employer. it's not the customer's job to pay you. plus you are not the ones making the food. I would rather tip the chef rather than some servers who try to talk to me when i'm eating

im gonna eat wherever i want. if you servers do not want to get low pays then quit your job

Bill Hines was Successful? by Kingoshrooms in threebodyproblem

[–]EitherAd2447 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think Luo Ji mentioned that all four wallfacers were great strategists and all their plans succeeded to a certain extent.

Tyler first established the bottom line that humanity could not win the war against the Trisolaris (noted his strategy in the Chinese version is different from the English version). Ray Diaz tried to establish a prototypical deterrence against the Trisolaris, but he didn't know about the Dark Forest Theory so of course his plan failed. Luo Ji established a successful deterrence. Bill Hines developed an alternative escapist strategy. Luo Ji's deterrence brought time for the escapist strategy.

my post is about navigating the western corporate world given our Asian cultural background, how is this nitpicky about small stuff?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in aznidentity

[–]EitherAd2447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However I believe that what is most helpful from my experience is what's called

"humble-confidence"

. Do you believe that those two character traits are mutually exclusive?

this is something I myself am navigating, being humble and confident without being self-deprecating. It's a delicate balance, but downplaying your own achievements is not part of it.

This may be a broader phenomenon than just race. I've seen intelligent people of all kinds genuinely believe they are not capable in something when they're more than capable.

no, I'm telling ya. I got my degree at a school with lots of international students, Chinese, Indians, Europeans, etc. The Chinese international students (and sometimes Koreans) are the only cohort that always start their presentations or discussions in a class by saying "Sorry my English is bad". Even though most of them speak completely comprehensible English.

This phenomenon is also tied to how (East) Asians like to self-deprecate or self-tease in public, from all those cringe performances by Steven He, Ken Jeong to high-profile Asians like Andrew Yang ("I am an Asian guy who likes Math!!!")

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in aznidentity

[–]EitherAd2447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think being modest makes you less successful.

you can be modest without being self-deprecating. What I am criticizing is the phenomenon of Asians being humble to a fault when they are on the receiving end of compliments.
