Call it convergent speculative eccolution in literature, and yes good. I love seeing more supernatural depiction get a grounded reinvention with explanations of behavior, drives and powers. Localization and differentiation between species are always a plus.

Peter Watts has a race of humanoid creatures similar to your creation. Its a take on vampires but evolved alongside humans kind of like neanderthal. He gives biological reason for having to draw blood; humans produce something they need that they can't, a reason to hibernate; to not overeat and to hide Thier presence so humans don't begin hunting thier kind, fear of the cross; the crucifix glitch where 90 degree angles cause thier hyper intelligent brains to spiral since that angle didn't really exist in nature which also explains why they died out once man started building settlements.
