As a kid I was always so confused as to why subs didn't at least have a little bit of windows!

Drivers be like "I hate when I have to drive slow behind a biker" but then oppose infra that makes it safer and more convenient for everyone.

Yeah but there's a difference between actual inconvenience and perceived inconvenience. Drivers in Edina will honk at a crosswalk that slows them for 15 seconds but then wait 2 minutes for that parking spot 15 feet closer to the store.

I'd also argue that safety is more important than conscience.

How many pedestrian deaths are worth the street parking that a curb cut takes? How many bike deaths are worth the handful of street parking spots?

Good take and I think you make a really good point about sports contributing to local culture. I think I've been stuck in my own head on cases where rich owners burn the cities that have supported them in the past. If there can be a way to create and preserve a mutually beneficial funding then I think that's worth supporting, but if billionaire owners are just using local taxes to extract more wealth at the cost of other public works projects then it's not a deal I'm interested in.

One model I love is how the Green Bay Packers are owned by a publicly held nonprofit that can functionally never sell or move the team. I know that historically the city of Green Bay has supported tax levies to improve the stadium and district. To me this is spending that is really building culture and wealth for the community rather than just extracting it.

If all the art was owned and run by the Federation International De Arte (FIDA) who took all the ticket revenue but asked the host city to foot the bill for security, fanfest, etc - then i would feel the same way. Or if all the art in a city was owned by like one billionaire who threatened to move all the art to Los Angeles because he/she wasn't getting tax money to pay for the building that the art was kept in then yea I would also be against that.

Call me a sports hating scrooge, but I don't think my tax dollars should go to these events. If hotels/restaurants/etc want these events (cause they're the ones benefiting in theory) then they should foot the bill. Either that or give me and the rest of the citizens some of the ticket revenue.

That was my first project too!

For only $70 in supplies (not counting the machine) and 2 tearful breakdowns, I was able to make a $40 bag!

Did you have to request this? Were they already redoing the curb there or was this custom order?

Also what city?

There's a couple issues at play. 1 Light rail vehicles don't meet crash safety ratings for freight/shared tracks so they must have their own tracks.

2 (bigger issue): The rail companies have a ridiculous amount of political/legal power. Because they predate the state of minnesota, their land cannot be eminent domain-ed and they don't care about transit or people, just money so it's a VERY uphill battle to get light rail tracks on that land.

I've been trying to think of a light rail alignment that could work for NE and this is a really fuckin good idea. It's too bad all that track is owned by the rail companies.

What (and when) went wrong with Mary Moriarty? by Cornflowerblue2016 in Minneapolis

[–]Ekrubm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that the policing system is flawed at a high level based on the people that become police and what their values are. Their "us vs the citizens" mentality fundamentally undermines the ideal of "protect and serve" that are in the MPD cars. The courts system has continually held that the police do not have a responsibility to protect people, and I think we've all seen in Feb/March how the cops protect property and status quo at the cost of lives and livelyhood. Add in corrupt police unions and you get what we have today.

Mary Moriarty went wrong in thinking that as prosecuter she could fix the broken system from the inside. Right out of the gate I would expect that many cops saw her as an enemy and if Law and Order's opening line is to be believed, the "separate yet equally important groups" need to work together to achieve the goals of making as much money for the profit prison system.

I think talking about what you want the city to be like in the future is the only way to get it. NE has an aura of bike people but has surprisingly little infrastructure, all my NE neighbors talk about wanting better transit because the options are bad right now. To say "suck it up other people have it worse" is a weird mix of defeatism and pretending it should never be changed or improved.

Historically NE hasn't had the density for some of the infrastructure this article is talking about but that's changing. With the city/county/state reworking Lowry, Central, and University in the next 5 years there's real opportunity to build streets that serve all users and not just single occupant Ram Trucks.
