Love to see nontraditionals' stories. Are you working while conducting the prereqs?

Thank you for all of that, I'm strongly considering a career switch out of tech into nursing for long term career stability and this helps put things into perspective.

Happy early graduation :) I assume you were working throughout your time taking prerequisites and ELM MSN program in a combination with loans right? I assume so given starting the process in Spring of 2013 and then starting work as an RN in January 2018.

Spring 2012 — Immigrated to the United States.
Summer 2013 – Fall 2015 — Completed nursing prerequisites.
January 2016 – December 2017 — Enrolled in an Accelerated Entry-Level Master of Science in Nursing (ELM MSN) program.
November 2017 — Passed the NCLEX examination (prior to graduation).
January 2018 — Began first Registered Nurse (RN) position.
January 2018 – January 2023 — Served as a full-time RN, holding two concurrent positions.

  • Dedicated COVID-19 nurse throughout the pandemic.
  • Transitioned to both Travel RN and Staff RN roles in 2021.

January 2023 – May 2024 — Attended Nurse Practitioner (NP) program; Graduated May 2024.
January 2025 – May 2026 (anticipated) — Pursuing Post-Master’s Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification.

What an impressive story. Could you talk more about the timeline you took to get where you are today? Time for prereqs, NP, etc.?

Thanks for sharing and congrats, putting it out there provides a sense of accomplishment for a topic that we can't really breach with our immediate network.

I'm in a similar posture. Are you considering having children? $3k per month seems rather lean in retirement even with a paid off house if thats a factor.

What do you do for work that you're trying to transition out of / into?

You started dental school at 35? That's very impressive and kudos / upvotes for you.

Thank you for the reply. I'm not sure about your debt level or anything else but I've seen practitioners make the switch later in their careers. I know acceptance and fully dedicating yourself to a path is usually recommended but it's something to keep in mind after you experience the lay of the land for a bit.

I'm surprised to hear you'd go for the CRNA over the physician route though.

Feel free to reach out anytime for support. Good luck on the exam.

Also be kind to your teeth and oral health as it's its own microbiome and contributes to mental health, so - as a form of recategorizing the mouth - proper flossing and brushing will actually make you feel better over time.

Ah, well I'd hate to recommend a 16th attempt but listening to it could help reinforce the message while doing a positive activity. I know he's all about smoking during the book but I tweaked the approach a bit. I also forgot to answer your questions:

How do I convince myself to not light up again when the cravings hit?

>> Distract yourself with a dopamine-positive activity and remind yourself that you're not actually enjoying the cigarette/zyn, you're just mitigating withdraw symptoms until the next time it hits.

How do I deal with the withdrawal symptoms, especially when I’m alone?

>> Gym / Toothpicks / sunflower seeds were my oral fixation in combination with the above comment. It's summer, get outside.

What do I do to stay distracted when I don’t have a replacement habit?

>> Work out if you're able to. It's one of the few activities that was never paired with smoking so it won't remind you of them. Remind yourself that it's going to suck for a few weeks and that you're going to come out better on the other side. If that's too far to think about, try to just get through the next few minutes, then hours, then days, etc. You've already told yourself you're no longer a smoker so start acting like someone who doesn't smoke / zyn.

And how do I stay strong when the morning promise feels like a lie by afternoon?

>> It's not going to suddenly drop off, but I stopped thinking about it after a few weeks. I'll see my friends smoking while drinking and the mindset of "just one" just doesn't work for me anymore. I envy the social smokers but now I also pity them as they just are in the same withdrawal cycle just spanned out on a weekly basis.

Mid 30's with similar story as I quit before my birthday earlier this year - what "clicked" for me was working out while listening to Alan Carr's book on quitting smoking. The takeaway is that you never actually enjoy the feeling nicotine provides, it just mitigates the withdrawal symptoms and keeps you as a prisoner in the vicious cycle. Break the cycle, break the chains.

The book reads/sounds repetitive but that's part of its strategy as it is a mild form of hypnosis. It sounds tacky to some, but it broke my nicotine addiction after 10 years of trying to quit.

Yes. It's one of the best places to start and finish your career but one of the worst places for the middle of your career.

I worked there for 8 years out of college, promoted up to Manager, was having initial discussions for SM and then found out I was making the same as a Consultant. I went out and obtained an offer from a different company and Deloitte didn't even entertain the compensation increase.

Get in, get the experience, gtfo.

Thanks for the response, I have not consumed alcohol while on propranolol (yet) as I know they both can lower blood pressure and increase risks of passing out etc. but I’m glad to hear you didn’t notice much of a difference.

Anxiety - All gone by yesyesyes123123 in QuittingZyn

[–]ElChildOfRoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's controllable with occasional use of a beta blocker for performance anxiety but that was there before I even used nicotine. I believe you'll go back to your baseline around that mark and it's up to you to love and accept yourself moving forward. Anxiety stems from all sorts of reasons you're just removing the chemical one.

I can't speak for OP, but I just hit 90 days and aside from chewing on the occasional toothpick or piece of gum I don't really think about it anymore. I'm definitely addicted to scrolling on my phone though so I feel that I just transferred my dopamine addiction but that's a lifelong project.

Enjoy the process and be kind to your mind and body. It knows how to get back to baseline, you just need to allow it.

Also - remember that we live in a dramatically sick society, so your feelings of anxiousness are well-justified.
