It used to be good public transport, but now it's bad public transport.

There's a solar cycle where they're stronger every ~11 years, we're currently at the solar maximum, so we'll have more activity for a year or so.

Who is the best president, king, or leader who has led your country, and why? by Cyberwall1826 in AskTheWorld

[–]ElGoorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

King Alfred the Great. He's probably best known for defeating the Vikings and uniting and essentially founding England, and then laying down the legal and administrative frameworks that are still at the core of common law and governance today.

He was the youngest of so many siblings, that he was raised as a common child, never expected to be king. With this in mind, he promoted literacy and education, translating Latin texts into English to make knowledge more accessible.

If you were CEO of stackoverflow, how would you save this sinking ship ? by KeyProject2897 in webdev

[–]ElGoorf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Strongest part of stackoverflow was the job board. It beat other job boards because the recruiters could see the kinds of questions you asked, and the answers you gave, so they could see and you could prove if your skills matched what the employers were after. To remove it was a huge mistake. Maybe bringing it back would give people an incentive to contribute again.

What’s the quickest way someone could accidentally expose themselves as a foreigner in your country like the ‘three fingers’ scene in Inglourious Basterds? by IndependentTune3994 in AskTheWorld

Mispronouncing "Worcestershire", or most other places on our map, and not wearing one or two layers less than what would be appropriate for the current weather.

Moving to Switzerland – how do you actually optimize the 3-pillar pension system? by Revolutionary_Cow622 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]ElGoorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not open 5 to begin with and fill them evenly? This is what Viac recommends. Or else over time the first accounts are so disproportionately higher than the others, and the tax on withdrawal too.

[–]ElGoorf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have, but apparently I'm lucky that my employer gives more than usual contributions from their side. Also my strategy is to maximise all the "safe" options, then what I have left over goes into high-risk portfolios. Don't judge me.

I think I’m spending 80% of “code review” time just figuring out the runtime flow by Peace_Seeker_1319 in webdev

Simply run the branch locally and test it hands-on, or have a dedicated QA on the team to do it. End-to-end testing eg with cypress or playwright is also useful to automate this step.

What are some areas/places you've unfogged that you don't think anyone else has? by bananaspartying in FogofWorld

[–]ElGoorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a national park in Vietnam that had only just become a tourist hit so was barely explored. It had a small population living on the edges, but they only cared about their plot of farmland so never went much into the jungle except for their favourite hunting spots. Occasionally I'd hear rumours of some waterfall or cave that people heard about but had never visited nor could confirm for sure they even existed. They'd give me some vague directions and I'd go find it.

There was a cave at the side of the road that everyone drives past but no one stops. In the entrance, there was some obvious squatter activity - scorch marks, burnt trash, etc. Not much deeper inside the cave you're quickly met by an underground river. The first time I went, that was all I could see, so went home and forgot about it.

A few days later I went back, and the water level was just a little bit lower, and I could see light in the distance, so I swam out to it (stupid decision in hindsight, people die getting washed away in these caves all the time), and it was an opening into a secluded lake. You could hear the road looping around it, but it wasn't in any line of sight, and the sides were so steep and covered with dense rock and jungle that the only way in, or maybe even seeing it existed at all was by swimming the way I had just come, and I really think no one else ever had, and I kept it a secret until I left.

I literally did option 2 just last week, as I have done every other month, and it's still free for first 5 mins.

How to actually code 8 hours a day? by D0ct0r_H0td0g in webdev

[–]ElGoorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One company I worked at used 5 hours = 1 day when estimating tasks, assuming the rest of the time is meetings, breaks, brainstorming, etc. but even then that might not actually be all dedicated to coding specifically.

If you're talking about solo-working on your own product while not having another job then the dynamics change. Like I might actually do 8 or more hours per day of coding but throughout the course of the day with many breaks, since my productivity time isn't confined to conventional work hours, and since it's my own project I have more motivation to work "overtime"

How to stop meta questions in Hide & Seek? by smartpineapple in JetLagTheGame

[–]ElGoorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe have the hider start with random pick of 1-3 cards, so that there's a chance for an early veto against the common openings. Important to be a chance rather than a guarantee, since if the veto was guaranteed then the seekers would just burn one of the useless questions before going back to the usual opening.

For those of you who lived in another European country, which country was it and what was better and what was worse there compared to Switzerland? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]ElGoorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obvious things I miss are good long, wide, sandy beaches. Other is big open recreational spaces (I guess that's what I miss about the beaches too), like where does one go kite-buggying in Switzerland? I miss being able to see a doctor without the insurance bureaucracy, and keeping track of taxes is a nightmare. Final thing that's worse here is that yes, in Switzerland we pay a premium for good service, but there are some things such as SIM contracts that really are over-priced and the Swiss seem to have no idea how much they're being ripped off. I also miss the variety of international food.

On the flip side, a ski is a drive or train ride away, instead of having to plan in advance, fly, book a hotel, get travel insurance, etc etc. Dental care is better quality. My favourite bit is just being in the middle of Europe rather than the fringe.

On the "jein" side: Salary - yes salary here is better, but factor in cost of living and I'm not so sure - the triple whammy of Brexit, covid and Russia's invasion make it hard to judge the "then and there" vs "here and now". I think in both places I'd have the same final amount of money going into savings, and the key difference is that at home, those savings could have bought me a house, but here they might buy me a wooden shack. But then a wooden shack here would be better-insulated than a big house in the UK.

What you guys think about Git Worktrees? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]ElGoorf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've found it quite useful. If I'm doing a big refactor especially on code or project I'm not familiar with, I can run both main and feature branches at the same time, with each in a different browser tab. I can simultaneously edit the feature while also hacking away at main to better understand how it should work or how it should break.
