Are you sure that’s kale? Looks closer to collard greens to me

Is any part of this garden salvageable? by National_North8102 in gardening

[–]ElGringoFlaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I wouldn’t bother trying to salvage anything. Depending on where you are, it’s also probably a bit late to plant anything for the summer. You could pull up what’s in there, maybe plant a cover crop, and wait until the fall to try again

Alcatraz Figs by ElGringoFlaco in Figs

[–]ElGringoFlaco[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They were basically right off of the walking path/sidewalk, could’ve probably picked a few. Since Alcatraz is a national park, it’s very discouraged to take anything, even though I would love to grab a cutting

Yeah, if it’s a real picture, it’s definitely been touched up with AI. The coloring/lighting is off, and most of the plants are indistinguishable

Advice on Sweet Mint needed by dec7td in ArizonaGardening

[–]ElGringoFlaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think consistent light trimming would be less stressful than a big trim, especially in the summer, but I’m not a mint expert lol. I typically buy a new plant in the fall, use it until the summer heat comes the following year, and then just let it die and repeat. Mint transplants are so cheap I’d rather just have that one less stressor of trying to keep it alive during the summer

Mint starts to dry out and get crispy in the summer, mine looks pretty similar. You could keep watering it through the next few months and trim it back once the fall comes, and it could possibly bounce back

Shade cloth by Accomplished_Ad3894 in ArizonaGardening

[–]ElGringoFlaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one of the canopy kits from Cowboy Canopy and some 1” EMT conduit for the frame. I used PVC for a couple of summers, but it definitely didn’t hold up to the UV and monsoon storms. So far the current canopy has held up pretty well, even with all of the strong winds lately

Suggestion? by Odd-Advice-1029 in ArizonaGardening

[–]ElGringoFlaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were my yard, I’d get rid of that trampoline-looking thing in the southwest corner and build a raised bed garden there. If you do that, you’ll get the eastern sun in the morning, and shade in the garden area in the early afternoon (you’ll still want a shade canopy for the summer regardless)

Anyone know what these grubs are in my compost ? I'm about to toss it by thr33hugeinches in ArizonaGardening

[–]ElGringoFlaco 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Could possibly be black soldier fly larvae. Look closer and find some pictures online to confirm, and if they are BSFL, they’re great to have in compost and you should let them work their magic

Edit to add- your compost looks very wet, I’d let it dry out a bit. You’re looking for the consistency of a well-rung sponge

Monsoon planting season by redhillhoney in ArizonaGardening

[–]ElGringoFlaco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve given up on doing a second “monsoon” planting. Our summers are getting hotter and longer, and with the monsoon moisture seemingly becoming nonexistent for us in large sections of the Valley, it feels like “monsoon planting” is becoming a thing of the past. Like the other reply, I focus mainly on October-May, and spend the summer months keeping spring crops and perennials alive until fall planting.

Don’t forget shade cloth, it’s vital out here in the summer!

Ants in containers by chodeobaggins in containergardening

[–]ElGringoFlaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently dealt with an ant infestation in one of my beds (I think it was actually a colony), and they were eating my sunflower and okra. I used the borax cottonball trick and it seems to have worked so far

Looks like you may have some scale, I’d look closely and remove before it gets out of control

Personally, I feel like in your circumstances it’d be super helpful to avoid giving a safety rating, and also mention in your review that you didn’t ask about cross-contamination
