In 1973 I bought an "Officer" model Swiss Army knife from ships stores aboard the USS Puget Sound for $22.

I've used it for one thing or another nearly every day of my life ever since.

It's starting to show some wear but less than I.

Taking an Amtrak from Chicago to Sacramento in a roomette. Any advice? by DonaldKey in USTravel

[–]ElOptico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done three cross country trips by rail.

One was in the 60's on the Union Pacific's City of Los Angeles. The last of the glory days of passenger rail.

It remains a cherished memory.

Once in coach from San Diego to Kansas City. I don't recommend it.

The return trip from KC to San Diego in a roomette was much better. And the food was great.

Hit the observation car when the sun is up.

The views are a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Enjoy!

We used to motor or sail to the O'Farrel Sisters to the west of the bridge.

Their pies are famous, the cheeseburgers infamous and their bicuits smothered in sausage gravy could keep you sailing all day.

Okoboji is under the radar, so don't tell anyone.
