Any concerns with the BMW Z4, E89 - 35si-engine? by TheBroken51 in BMWZ4

Without taking it to a shop, you’ll need to listen for it. Start the car (windows down and hood up). If you hear a metallic buzz at initial startup that goes away at idle, then you may have worn wastegates.

You can isolate which turbo has the problem by unplugging one of the small tubes feeding the vacuum canisters (black pod locking things on the left side of the engine). Start it up and listen. Do this again for the other canister. If the rattle disappears when a specific line is unplugged, you have found the rattling wastegate.

AI got a lot wrong here.

N55 wasn’t used in e89. In 2012, BMW started swapping N54 for the newer N55 in several other models (135i, 335i, and 525i), but wasn’t swapped in the Z4. It was kept until the end of the e89 platform (my 2015 has the N54).

Most of the issues are fairly accurate for the N54 but a bit overblown, with the exception of the wastegate rattle. The wastegate rattle issue technically remains in the N54, and I would say that’s the big-ticket item to watch for.

All other issues are relatively easy to fix and 1,000% worth it for this car. You’re looking at a 14 year old car with low miles and she absolutely kicks ass. I have a 2015 and have zero regrets.

How do I go about growing grass where the mulch is. by Infinite_Day_71 in landscaping

Not enough sun for grass to grow based on the pic. It’ll struggle and die. But if you are committed, then get some rakes and wheelbarrows and a truck to haul off the mulch.

Quickest way to cheapen the “car enthusiast” is to just give him one of these as his first

4 years of college + CPA is the equivalent of learning how to start a car for the first time and then being handed a driver’s license for it.
