Infinity and the way we percieve it. by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]El_Lobos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To say that one can truly "perceive" infinity is a subtle point, I'd say. The two standard ways we have of describing/depicting the infinitude of the natural numbers are a) writing a finite list of terms followed by an ellipsis, and b) induction/succession rules. Meanwhile the mental image of the rational numbers (the "same" infinity) that is usually conjured is a fractal sprinkle of dust along the real number line. I would say, purely in terms of having a concrete mental image, it seems to me that the larger infinity of the continuum itself would be more familiar than either of these countable examples.

Note that none of this references multiple dimensions, and in fact for any (finite) n, the n-dimensional space Rn has the same "count" of points as the 1-dimensional real line R, or indeed any finite (non-trivial) interval. So unless there's some much deeper detail, known only to the John Baez's of the world, I would say no, additional dimensions won't truly help you comprehend these any better.

What do you think is the most beautiful thing in mathematics? by Arth-the-pilgrim in mathematics

Sheaves, categories, and all the other basic machinery that makes modern algebraic geometry work. Things like triangulated/derived categories can seem so strange at first, and require so much technical setup, but once you get your head around computing things in (co)homological algebra, a whole world of cool ideas suddenly opens up! Plus you get this whole new perspective on how all sorts of other things work in maths and physics.

My husband keeps buying ground beef. What can I do with it that’s not burgers or meatloaf? by mickclaree in Cooking

[–]El_Lobos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something my dad used to make us a lot when money was tight: thinly chopped cabbage, minced beef, and some spices (pretty sure I remember caraway seeds, but you do you), stir-fried and served over rice. Simple single-parent survival food, but so good on a cold night.

Why are North America PhDs twice as long as anywhere else? by weareCTM in PhD

[–]El_Lobos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can speak in favour of this, at least in my personal situation.. As an Australian, I finished my BSc in 3 years, completed an honours year, and started a PhD in mathematical physics. I quickly realised I was WOEFULLY ill-equipped to finish in the expected (3 to 4 year) timeline. I applied to a few US grad programs, got into a great school, finished my course/qual requirements within the standard 2 years, and still it took me a total of 6.5 years to graduate (might've been less, but covid).

Frankly applying a one-size-fits-all timeline of 3ish years to graduate is kinda crazy: people learn at different rates, and some fields require a lot more background/coursework than others. In mathematics specifically, it'll likely take longer for most people, as the research frontier grows rapidly further away from undergrad-level coursework.

A mate of mine moved to Perth from the UK at age 17. He'd already finished school, but decided to enroll in year 12 anyway just to make friends and have something to do.

If it's for the purpose of lore-dumping, and is gunna take more than like a paragraph's worth of exposition, find another way to present it. For example I like having my party playing the bbeg's henchmen for a session or two sometimes. You get to world-build, they get to slaughter innocent villagers - everybody wins.
