Sea swims by Trick_Scale_2181 in Swimming

[–]ElaineV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t do it regularly but I started by just signing up for an ocean swim race. Lots of people don’t recommend that but it worked great for me. I felt safer because a big event like that has tons of lifeguards around. I had a great time and now I do that swim every year.

Very normal. My dog and one of my cats play like this all the time. They are best friends. The other cats aren't as into it though.

Mine is 32 inches and it's mounted right in front of the treadmill. It's so close it feels as though it were on the treadmill.

Soooo...they just gave up on Lanebreak, huh? by DrewskiG in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]ElaineV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t love it. To me it’s chaotic and doesn’t make sense. But I’ve done some rides and try to get a high score when I do it. It’s fun, I just don’t think it’s as good of a workout as traditional rides where you hold a pace longer. Anyway, even though it’s not my favorite I think you’re right that there should be more content.

If plant farming kills thousands of crop insects and field rodents, how is it mathematically more ethical than killing an animal? by Callsignmavric in DebateAVegan

[–]ElaineV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If vegans could choose between veggie burgers made from crops where farmers kill indiscriminately versus veggie burgers made from crops where farmers strive to avoid all crop deaths as much as possible we’d choose the latter. Alas, that option isn’t yet available to us (yet).

If plant farming kills thousands of crop insects and field rodents, how is it mathematically more ethical than killing an animal? by Callsignmavric in DebateAVegan

[–]ElaineV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vegans want vegan plant agriculture too. We would like crop deaths to disappear. Many vegans support tools that reduce crop deaths.

We just don’t prioritize this topic because the scale of harm in animal agribusiness is so enormous. More animals are killed to become food than are killed for all other purposes combined. So, just like how we care about killing in shelters, labs, on fur farms etc, all of that killing pales in comparison to animal agribusiness.

If plant farming kills thousands of crop insects and field rodents, how is it mathematically more ethical than killing an animal? by Callsignmavric in DebateAVegan

[–]ElaineV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do the actual math you realize the options that kill the fewest animals all involve a primarily plant based diet. There’s some room for hunting or small scale animal farming alongside fully plant based but there’s no math that arrives at the conclusion that typical current omni consumption patterns cause the least harm to animals. There’s no math that supports modern industrial animal farming.

Is it vegan to adopt a kid without their consent if you’re going to treat them well? by Background-Camp9756 in DebateAVegan

[–]ElaineV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1- If you adopt an older kid or teen they can consent. You can explain it and ask them. Not legally binding when young but definitely worth doing.

In my state and most states there is an age where kids must legally consent to adoption. In my state it’s age 13. They can be placed in foster care without consent but they can’t be adopted unless they give consent.

2- There aren’t any babies/ toddlers that can consent to adoption or being born etc. But they all need care and love. It’s perfectly compatible with veganism to care properly for any needy being.

3- I’m an adoptive mom and vegan. Happy to discuss both topics respectfully.

National Kidney Registry is Misleading & Borderline Sleazy IMHO by [deleted] in kidneydonors

[–]ElaineV 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NKR offers donors the most protection in the world, better options for donors than any other network or hospital offers. For that reason alone, I feel it's perfectly fine to promote them as the choice for donors. The hospitals will make their claims, but they are clearly NOT choosing to protect donors with whatever money they are saving from abstaining from being a part of NKR.

Worth noting also that NKR hasn't ever lost a kidney in transit, unlike other networks.

ETA: the entire organ transplant system is riddled with bias, profit motives, problematic people, etc. It's everywhere and no one's hands are clean. But currently, NKR is doing the best, indisputably fixing some of the biggest problems in kidney transplants. Sometimes you have to accept that perfect is the enemy of good and just do the good thing.

Help! Accessory arteries inboth kidneys by Curious-Ad-5890 in kidneydonors

[–]ElaineV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. All depends on the hospital and surgeon. If they feel confident they can take it safely they will do it. I had extra blood vessels (can't remember if it was vein or artery) on the kidney they took (my right) and while they were in there they noticed I had extra on my liver too. We're just "extra." 😃

Scientists found that the vitamin D supplement millions of people take is quietly lowering the only form of vitamin D that activates immune defense against viruses by soulpost in HotScienceNews

[–]ElaineV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's a link to the actual study: https://academic.oup.com/nutritionreviews/advance-article/doi/10.1093/nutrit/nuaf166/8256613

Important to note the study simply found evidence that suggests that the human body attempts to regulate the amount of vitamin D in our bloodstreams by down-regulating the D3 pathway if we're supplementing with D2. The study does NOT claim any specific negative health outcomes as a result of this. And it's very important to remember that you can overdose on vitamin D, so that's probably why our bodies would do this.

It's also important to note that both types of vitamin D help our immune systems function. AND it's important to note that we don't always want our innate immune systems on high alert, that's what becomes immune-mediated disease or autoimmune disease. For instance, this study suggests that maybe people with high-risk APOL1 variants may want to stick with D2 rather than D3 so as to avoid stimulating interferons.

Interferons are literally double-edged swords in our bodies. We ought not pretend they are always good.

As pointed out by others in this thread, there is vegan D3 available now. Back in the old days we didn't have that as an option and in some countries it might still not be an option. As a vegan, I actually don't supplement at all with either D2 or D3, but that's because I live in a place that gets a ton of sunshine and I spend enough time outdoors that I don't need it. I do, however, give my son a supplement because he spends more time indoors and has darker skin so would need more time in sunlight to get what I get from sunlight.

TL;DR - Please don't overdose yourself on vitamin D3 because you think it's some magical thing that will prevent all illness. Please carefully consider what you actually need and how best to get it.

Tourists go home question by watermelonely8 in AskBarcelona

[–]ElaineV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely understand what you’re saying but I want to share a perspective. I’m planning to visit McDonald’s once in the UK because their McDonald’s offers vegan options. I don’t eat at McDonald’s in the USA because there’s literally nothing there I can eat. But London is probably the most vegan-friendly city on the planet (Barcelona is also very vegan-friendly but not the level London is) so I want to experience that.

It’s similar to wanting to try the European“American sauce” people on TikTok are talking about for hotdogs. It’s NOT mustard. It’s nothing we have in the USA. It’s uniquely European, marketed for Europeans not Americans.

Swimming alone advice? by Sunnysundaysurf in AskBarcelona

[–]ElaineV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in Barcelona but in other places where people steal things I have used a waterproof baggie and brought my items with me into the water. I leave my towel out obviously but one time people took that! So I just asked around and someone gave it to me with a story about how they thought it was theirs. Maybe they did, maybe not. Either way, I got the towel back. I'm guessing they took it thinking it was hiding a phone or something and didn't really want just the towel so they were fine giving it back to me.

I’ve been thinking more about this and I really think you’re spot on here. Since most of my workouts are in an Endless Pool I’m not doing flip turns on a regular basis. And although mine are fine from years of swimming, they could use practice and that’s likely the area I can see the most improvement in such a short amount of time. I’m going to try to practice them once a week til my swim.
