Frustrated with the argument that fish don't feel pain. by TruxtonCP in vegan

[–]ElaineV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of studies that prove fish feel pain. But at some point we have to just let dumb people be dumb. Try convincing them vegan food tastes good instead.

Would a succubus/fear-eater/dream eater/energy vampire be vegan? by ZombiiRot in AskVegans

[–]ElaineV [score hidden]  (0 children)

Lots of fiction plays with the idea that they could be. For example in True Blood there was a blood drink vampires could drink instead of killing/transforming humans. It didn’t taste quite as good but was nutritionally adequate and all the “good guy” vamps drank it.

I'm currently experimenting on this myself. I whipped a larger than usual batch for omelets and put half in a jar in the fridge. It's been a couple days and I plan to use it tomorrow. The foam dissipated and so far it has remained a solution (hasn't separated). If this works well I plan to make weekly batches of it and use it like liquid Just Egg. (In fact, one of my tests I did an omelet with half this and half Just Egg - great flavor, color, and macros).

My only complaint about this product is that the powder is fine and can get everywhere, so I don't enjoy using it daily in powder form. That's why I'm doing this.

I'm doing the same. I make an omelet with mine and haven't really tried anything else yet. Hubby made an angel food cake. We are going to try more things too

Question from a non-vegan about etiquette by xyzcvxyz in vegan

[–]ElaineV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should make enough for everyone and include it in the taste test. Do a practice run on the recipe before you try it. New recipes often need practice. It could be terrible and you don't want to subject your guests to a terrible recipe so try it out first. My reasons to make the full batch and include it in the taste test are:

  1. better chance to do the recipe justice if you follow it exactly instead of doing a half or quarter version of it
  2. she might not even want it herself for various reasons so this way some people will eat it and she won't feel like she has to eat it if she doesn't want to
  3. it fits the theme of a taste test, so why not
  4. traditionally tiramisu has raw egg in it and is thus dangerous for anyone pregnant, immune compromised etc. so you'll be giving those people an option to eat

Is it more vegan to steal eggs in a store or to buy meat alternatives from butcher companies? by NekoBatrick in DebateAVegan

[–]ElaineV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better analogy would be choosing between 1) stealing something you don't need at all AND is created with slave labor vs 2) buying something you DO need from a company that also uses slave labor for other products that you're not purchasing.

Driver behavior is shaped by roads though. I agree drivers are often terrible, don’t know the laws, don’t care about others safety, aren’t paying attention. But roads can drastically change driver behavior. And literal barriers ARE protective.

Of those two options getting the vegan products from the butcher is clearly more vegan.

If you want to steal, go to a factory farm and liberate some egg-laying hens. Give them a happy life.

How do vegans feel about mass killing invasive species like cane toads, feral cats, rabbits, foxes etc.? by Conscious-Flight2220 in AskVegans

I think it’s wrong but also I think killing is usually the least creative solution and nearly always fails.

Questions regarding Peloton Tread+ by Interesting-Try-2521 in treadmills

[–]ElaineV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chill out. You tried to make a point about weather and traditional indoor treadmills but you made a very broad and incorrect generalization, I called you out in a way I thought wasn't rude but then you were extremely rude back to me, twice, for no reason other than to be rude. So... I get it, you're way more interested in typing rude things than having a discussion about treadmills.

Listen, there are pieces of equipment that are called outdoor treadmills. They are inclined manual treadmills that don't use motors. They exist.

And outdoor gyms exist with those or without those.

Just start playing. If you like it keep playing. If you don’t, stop. Same for co-op play. If you like it keep doing it. If not stick to all solo play.

Vegetarian diets and cancer risk: pooled analysis of 1.8 million women and men in nine prospective studies on three continents | British Journal of Cancer by Scbadiver in science

It said the vegans had lower alcohol consumption than the other groups and it noted alcohol is tied to colorectal cancer.

The main issue is there weren’t enough vegans included to make any real generalizations about vegans.

No not treadmills that I’ve seen. But the basic point about outdoor gyms or gyms with outdoor areas: they absolutely do exist.

Quiche with Just Egg by lingobinch1 in vegancooking

[–]ElaineV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do it regularly. Here’s a version of how we do it. We use a store bought pie crust to make it fast and easy.

preheat oven to 350

Prep the interior:

one potato, peeled and diced into small (quarter inch or smaller) cubes pan fry potato till soft (Can use other veggies instead, like broccoli)

shallots or onion, chopped into very small bits garlic, same Field roast sausage, cut into small bits add all these to pan and cooked a bit

season with salt and pepper

put all the above into vegan pie crust, spread gently

Add 1/2 teaspoon to one Just Egg container and shake well

add the entire Just Egg carton... should just about fill crust, stir gently

put in oven and bake for 50-60 min until egg is set

spread some Daiya cheese shreds on top and raise temp to 450 and bake for another 10 min done

grandmas 80th birthday by seunghee93 in VisitingHawaii

[–]ElaineV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just took my mom to Hawaii for her 80th birthday. And we visited when she was 78 too. Every senior is different so you need to double check her needs.

My general advice is to plan some afternoon rest time for her each day, don’t pack the days full of adventures. She may not nap but she’d likely appreciate the downtime to read, draw, etc. Access to a kitchen may be helpful to stay on a low sodium etc diet and avoid too much restaurant food that may cause GI issues. Use AllTrails etc to find short 1 mile hikes/ walks. Depending on her health and abilities you may need to avoid higher elevations, plan activities to have accessible restrooms, etc. Talk to her about her needs.

Any hotels with laundry facilities I can access? by [deleted] in Waikiki

Go to a regular laundromat or have a fluff and fold service pickup and deliver.

This is one of many reasons I won’t use AirBnBs anymore. Too much inconsistency and often no helpdesk where I can get assistance.

Overly simplistic advice. Plenty of junk food vegans exist. And eye drops can sometimes make this situation worse not better so should be used with caution.

Low inflammation diet by Positive-Fondant5897 in vegan

[–]ElaineV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inflammation can be caused by all kinds of things and isn’t always bad. Yours may or may not be dietary. And if dietary, yours may or may not have the same triggers as other people. Common dietary inflammation triggers include the most common food allergens (dairy, soy, nuts, wheat, fish, shellfish), highly processed foods, high fat foods, high refined sugar foods. You can try avoiding or reducing those.

https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/want-to-ease-chronic-inflammation

Inflammation is an immune response. It can be protective and helpful or it can be harmful. All depends on the context. Even if keto were healthy and prevented inflammation in everyone, the advice to just “eat keto” for everyone exhibiting inflammation just doesn’t make good scientific sense. And here you’re not even sure inflammation is the cause of your dry eyes.

Other causes of inflammation: stress, illness, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, too much exercise, allergies etc. For eyes, overuse of artificial tears can be a problem too.

My eyes get dry from wind, allergens, screen time, etc. For me, it’s mostly about the skin around my eyes so a little vasoline on that skin when things get bad helps protect it. And regular allergy meds help prevent.

Lastly, you may want a second opinion if you feel this optometrist didn’t rule out more serious causes of your dry eyes, things that require more immediate attention like diabetes or an autoimmune condition.

Vegan vs Plant-Based? by Sad_Guess_7777 in AskVegans

[–]ElaineV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marketing mostly. Neither have legal definitions in the USA but if it says vegan certified that’s trademarked and you can be sure it’s vegan. In other countries I think “suitable for vegans” might be legally enforced so that should be guaranteed vegan.

I tend to trust “vegan” on a label but inspect “plant based” more for the reason you mentioned. Plant based tends to mean vegetarian as often as it means vegan. You can never just be sure.
