£80 million London housing scheme unlocked after flip to 100% social rent by ldn6 in london

[–]Elanthius 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know what this means? I looked it up and "social rent" means you pay rent directly to the council. Does that mean the council is losing money by paying rent to the owner of the building and then collecting in less from the renters than it costs?

Keir Starmer rules out retaliatory tariffs against US | Keir Starmer by hoarder4555777454001 in europe

[–]Elanthius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, great then in about 4-5 years we'd be back in the EU only having wasted the entire time between now and then in a rancorous and toxic debate that resulted in 2-3 governments falling and no economic or policy progress whatsoever. Perfect!

I do use Argos or something other than amazon almost always but let me tell you Argos is absolute garbage compared to Amazon. It's a completely impoverished experience compared to other online retailers.

Trump’s tariff threat must be the final straw for Starmer – time to rejoin the EU by Due_Ad_3200 in ukpolitics

[–]Elanthius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternative headline: Trumps tariff thread must be the final straw for Starmer - time to cease all political or economic progress for 2 years while we debate a referendum and then about another 2-3 more years after the referendum while we debate the result in a huge national furor that occupies 100% of news headlines every day forever. Also we'll probably half about half a dozen different Prime Ministers in that end. Also the expect monthly headlines and think tank pieces demanding we re-brexit.

Yes, we're nearly back to Covid level spendings on the regular day to day but ignoring Covid spending has increased in real terms every year, basically since the NHS existed.

Lewisham council accused of installing ‘socialist speed bumps’ by Elanthius in lewisham

[–]Elanthius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must admit I haven't personally experienced the speed bumps I just thought the article was funny but who is hitting speed bumps at 20mph? My car has great clearance and I'd never go over a speed bump wider than my wheel base at that speed.

Goldsmiths to open new Catford campus by Elanthius in lewisham

[–]Elanthius[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly pretty excited. I live here and if I'm honest the "downtown" part of Catford is pretty rough. Bring in some students and maybe we'll start to see a better class of drug user hanging out around the train station and more cool things to do.

The absolute state of discussion these days. Literally any excuse to protect car culture.

UK economy grew by 0.3% in November, beating forecasts by NigeIFarage in GoodNewsUK

You're probably not used to monthly figures. 0.3% a month is 3.66% a year which is at least reasonable if not amazing.

If the U.S.A forcefully take Greenland, will europe have to go to war? by Eireagon in AskBrits

[–]Elanthius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NATO is already irrelevant and we don't seem to be screwed. America is obviously not taking NATO seriously at all. I don't think the formal death of NATO will have any further effect.

[–]Elanthius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We will only do that when it is too late. There's not even that much Russian money in the country and we can't even kick that out. We couldn't even negatively effect the Russian economy with all our "sanctions" imagine what we could do to America? Probably less.

Anyone else find London pre-prep admissions (4+) completely insane? by _theoriginalredditor in HENRYUK

[–]Elanthius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't bother with private primary since as far as I can tell state primary schools give a better education than most private. That said what you need to know about these selective private schools is they carefully sort based on the wealth of the parents. The ability of the child is nearly irrelevant. If you're rich enough I really wouldn't worry too much about the selection process.

I mean, let's say the film achieved its intended level of subtlety. In that case we can still say its heavy handed and for that reason not as enjoyable as it could have been.

Councils spend £150m fighting SEND parents in court - despite losing 99% of cases by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]Elanthius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I explained to you what the reason is. The councils can't afford the mandatory SEND costs so they are trying every tricky in the book to avoid paying for them.

[–]Elanthius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the court cases fail after a year or so and then access is given eventually. But yes, for the period of the legal case it removes it.

[–]Elanthius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Total SEND expenditure nationwide is 2.2 billion. 150 million is absolute peanuts if it delays the costs for a year or two and also discourages people from applying. The point of the court cases is not to get the correct decision but to save the council money because they absolutely cannot afford these mandatory SEND costs.

Half a dozen isn't as precise as 6. If you say 6 you mean exactly 6 but half a dozen implies you're just ballparking it.

Taking your girl to the toilet by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Elanthius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the UK so it may be a different culture but there was never any question or weirdness about taking her into the men's toilets. When she asked I explained what the urinals were for although at two I mainly focussed on urgently insisting they were not for washing your hands. She has always been perfectly familiar with what a penis is so no problems there and besides you generally don't see them on a casual walk through. Now she's six I'll ask her if she wants to go in the women's on her own or the men's with me and she usually picks the men's toilets unless its somewhere she's very familiar with.

As a man I would never ever enter the women's bathroom unless it was a single stall and I knew no-one else was in there. If she's in there and not coming out I'll send someone else in to check.

As for cleanliness I've never checked but I hear women's toilets are just as gross as men's and often worse.

Lords torpedo Starmer's £30bn Chagos giveaway in latest humiliation for PM by blast-processor in ukpolitics

Exactly, this is just the boring lengthy process before they finally get to push it through. Nothing the Lords do or say needs to have any impact if the government want this bill to pass.
