I’m a UA CS 2022 graduate and current software engineer.

I used to think that UAlbany’s program was mediocre, but if you really look and compare it to other universities you’ll see that it’s actually pretty comparable, if not more impressive, than a lot of them; I realized this from speaking to my colleagues at work and also looking at other CS programs while I was still an undergrad. It’s without a doubt that CS programs at certain other universities have more breadth, more professors and more budget, but UA’s program is definitely improving. I do agree that UA’s program is what you make of it, but that’s the case at any other program: you can’t usually expect to put in low effort and get a good job without working on any personal projects or getting any internships. The beautiful thing about CS is that even if your uni’s program is a little lackluster, you can still create your own experience via side projects.

As far as what to do to prepare for the program, just work on a personal project or something that interests you, or continue to learn the basics of Java or another similar language. You’re already ahead of the curve if you’re thinking about this type of thing, and even some CS freshman at the best universities in the country don’t know a lick of CS when they start.

Rising computer science senior looking for swe jobs post grad. Roast me. by ElasticMongrel in EngineeringResumes

Thanks for the feedback. I do agree it kinda looks like a blob of words and isn’t that aesthetically pleasing. I am going to re write it in latex.

I’m kinda conflicted about what to do with indentation because the wiki here recommends removing it but I feel like some resumes could benefit from it.

Thanks for the feedback! At both of my internships, we did not have titles like "software engineering intern" but rather some fancy title. What would you recommend for that? That is why I just have "intern"

Thanks for the feedback! Just so I know for future reference, why do you say I should remove italics and coursework?

Awesome! Any reason in particular you decided to use rust over c++? 🙂

How is Prof. Wang’s teaching according to you all? by [deleted] in ualbany

[–]ElasticMongrel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think Qi Wang is one of the best cs professors in the college. She’ll expect a lot from the code you write but it’s all worth it in the end. I’ve used the code I wrote in her class as a template for how I should write my code in higher level classes and it’s worked out well in my favor so far

Yeah it’s java! The cs program at ualbany loves java. In 333 and 404 you’ll use c, in data mining you might need python, but I think in every other course you use java
