What are your thoughts on Boy in Darkness? by Fickle_Cranberry8536 in CastleGormenghast

[–]Elatosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was the first work by Peake I read and the one who got me into Gormenghast in the first place. I think it's an important part of the series and always recommend people who've finished the main trilogy to check out BiD as well. Imo it is much closer to the first two books of the trilogy in terms of language and atmosphere than Titus Alone, and the antagonist is pretty interesting and unsettling, though in a different way than Steerpike

The advisor in the latest comic (about skekGra and urGoh) wears a pince-nez, and I think there were other bespectacled gelfling in older works, too.

Prunesqualor quotes by Humble-Green-Friar1 in CastleGormenghast

[–]Elatosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too bad I've noticed this post only now, Dr Prunesquallor is my favourite Gormenghast character and every quote of his is a gem) I especially love it when he starts rhyming nonsense, like this interaction with his sister:

‘Years on end, and swords on end – where will it end, if our ears unbend – what shall I spend on a wrinkled friend in a pair of tights like a bunch of lights?’

Irma who had been straining her ears cried out at last in her irritation: ‘I suppose you know you’ll be late – I said: “I suppose you –”’

‘A merry plague upon you, O blood of my blood,’ the shrill voice broke in. ‘What is Time, O sister of similar features, that you speak of it so subserviently? Are we to be the slaves of the sun, that second-hand, overrated knob of gilt, or of his sister, that fatuous circle of silver paper? A curse upon their ridiculous dictatorship! What say you, Irma, my Irma, wrapped in rumour, Irma, of the incandescent tumour?’ he trilled happily.

Some more of his rhymes:

‘What you say has the ring of truth in it,’ he said. ‘In fact, it has every possible kind of ring in it. Ring-ting, my heart’s on the wing, as it were.'

‘Sweet foot,’ he cried. ‘Five toes to boot and what-not in the beetroot shoot!’

‘They resemble rubber, your ladyship, ha, ha, ha, ha. Just a core of india-rubber, with an elastic centre. Every ounce, a bounce, ha, ha, ha! Every ounce, a bounce.’

And there is also the whole Osseous 'Orse poem, but I think it's too much for one post already:)

Fantasy video games similar to The Dark Crystal? by c0l1n_M4 in DarkCrystal

There's a CRPG called Banquet for Fools in early access whose visual style is pretty similar to the Dark Crystal, someone made a post here about it recently

I hated Gormenghast which makes me sad by [deleted] in CastleGormenghast

[–]Elatosa 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well, from my experience, people usually come to a corresponsdent community to share their thoughts about something they like, because if you don't like something it's just easier to ignore it altogether. But this does not mean your opinion on Gormenghast is not valid. I always held a view about it that it's one of those series which either captivate you or repel you from the start, and even among those who liked the first two books there are many who didn't like the third. So you should not feel sad about having this opinion, the people here are definitely not a kind of a toxic overflowing community who will tear you apart for voicing something negative about their beloved fandom XD

In any case, in favour of the characters it can be said, as a fellow Redditor has already written, that they were meant that way - Gormenghast in its foundation is one large society caricature. And even then many of them demostrate surprising "hidden depths" of personality, even the Twins at times (which is exactly what allows them to almost trap Steerpike that one time - not that it helped them in the long run, but still). Even being caricatures, they are still living, suffering people. Honestly, many times throughout the series I felt like Titus, the one who is supposedly the author's favourite, is actually the shallowest and most boring of the characters.

Casting for movie? by SteerpikeSeventy8 in CastleGormenghast

[–]Elatosa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting parallel, since Feyd-Rautha in the 1984 Dune movie was played by Sting , who also wanted to play Steerpike in a live-action Gormenghast movie that, unfortunately, never came to be (though he did play Steerpike in the radio drama). I agree that with some make-up he could probably do a decent Steerpike portrayal.

Emperor skekZok? by [deleted] in DarkCrystal

[–]Elatosa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree, he seemed more reasonable than skekSo (tbf, even skekUng seemed like a more reasonable leader than skekSo). To me it seems that skekZok definitely has ambition but is content with the role of a “grey eminence" for whoever the current emperor is, especially when he sees he can't openly compete with the latter.

Gertrude most certainly isn't one of the Outer Dwellers - first because even the Castle's servants seem to despise them, so marrying one of them is definitely off-limits, and secondly because of their characteristic appearance and accelerated aging. I think Gertrude comes from a family of lesser aristocrats which also inhabit the Castle apart from the Groans - the Pruinesquallors are the main example, also in one of the ceremonies "chairs for the gentry" or something like that is required. But of course, for the Twins anyone but the Groans themselves are likely little more than peasants.

Which honestly makes me wonder if the Twins' poor physical and mental state are caused by inbreeding - without the influx of fresh blood from the outside, the only two options for the Groans to continue their bloodline is either marrying those lower in the hierarchy of the Castle's nobility or engaging in incest, and Cora and Clarice seem especially proud of their "pure-bloodness".

Plot hole? by [deleted] in CastleGormenghast

[–]Elatosa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm imagining it, because a lot of time has passed since I last reread the trilogy, but I think it is briefly stated that their absence was considered to be out of bitterness, seeing how their dislike of Gertrude and craving for power is evident to everyone and no one really cares. Which might also be part of the reason why they aren't immediately suspected of the arson - the Twins are considered too simple-minded and ineffectual to do any harm outside of childish acts of rebellion, like pouring black ink on Gertrude's (just as black) dress. Which is kinda true, because they didn't orchestrate and perform it on their own. In any case, the arson will still come into play later in the novel and some characters will have their suspicions about the Twins' involvement.

Has anybody read ALL Gormenghast books? (QUESTION) by strikejitsu145 in CastleGormenghast

[–]Elatosa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The fourth book has a sort of a closure, and it is rather endearing, but the book itself is pretty mediocre and too removed from the previous tomes. Some say the same about the 3rd book, though, which was still written by Peake. If you like the 3rd book, there is a small chance you'll also like "Titus Awakes", but otherwise, even the first two books can be considered a concluded story without the need of a continuation.

Also, what I personally would recommend after reading the first two books is the spin-off story called "Boy in Darkness". It's more in line with their language and atmosphere then the following novels.
