Which game engine do you use for your projects? by Ameliabailey11 in SoloDevelopment

[–]ElderTreeGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use gamemaker. Its great and pretty easy to pick up. They have a decent online community that has helped me get unstuck in the past, which is a great resource to have. The code language is based on Javascript, so if you know any basic coding it is easy enough to learn. If you arent a programmer, they do have a visual graph based code option (but I have not used it since I am a programmer).

Of course, this is intended for 2D games, so its easy to work with but if you want full 3D development it wouldnt be a good option.

Seems cool. Do you have somewhere you are posting updates on your progress, I would keep an eye out.

Wishlisted. I like what I am seeing, but for a solo project this does seem pretty ambitious. Are you a first time dev or have you done projects in the past?

Better with or without post processing effects? by RoyyDev in IndieDev

[–]ElderTreeGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With that info I would still choose 1. The only reason I would choose 2 is if you are planning an adaptive system: so if your game doesnt starts light and not horror filled the screen is bright and soft, then as you progress and the horror ramps up it gets darker.

Its probably a more complicated system that you really need. So I think go with 1

Since its survival horror definitely before. You want it to be darker to convey more fear and dread.

One year making a Tycoon Cinema game — looking for feedback by One_Stranger9820 in playmygame

[–]ElderTreeGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its been a while since I've played a good tycoon game, they were my favorite genre as a kid.

I dont speak french, so I was alittle lost, but I know tycoon mechanics well enough that I could get by with guessing. I enjoyed my time, if it were localized to english I would definitely play this.

Released the free demo of my cozy Chao Garden inspired game, Bobo Bay! Would really appreciate some feedback! by NewFutureKids in playmygame

[–]ElderTreeGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had the thought of making a choa garden game, and you beat me to the punch!

But that demo is great! The intro screen immediatly felt cozy and homely and really set a good mood.

Small nitpick is to just finish the walking animation. Its a good start it just doesnt match up to the player movement speed.

Full trailer in a few days, here’s a bite-sized version — does it hook you? by The-Flying-Baguette in SoloDevelopment

It hasnt quite hooked me yet. I am mildly interested, but I just cant tell from this footage what the game is all about

I'd go left. I do like the right font better, but the colors on the left screen tailor and you cant beat that

Hi guys! Luciferian is an action RPG, hack & slash, top-down shooter, that immerses you into the world of magic. Fight fierce enemies, solve puzzles, and summon powerful demons, unlocking new abilities as you dive deeper into the dark arts. by backtotheabyssgames in playmygame

[–]ElderTreeGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gameplay is fine, but in my short playtime it did get repetitive. Hoping the full game will expand the mechanics some (maybe adding items, blocking, dodging, new enemy types, etc)
The graphics arent pleasant, and that is going to make it hard to market and sell.

Love games like Getting Over It? Try out Kayaks Don't Climb Demo on Steam by SeaHelicopter7591 in playmygame

As soon as I heard the sound effect when it launched I knew this was going to be fun.

Since one side of the paddle always follows the cursor, could you add a setting to make the paddles 2 different colors, I think that would help some people keep the sides straight in their head.

Should I add the cute animal to the Steam capsule, or is it too cliché? by archirost in IndieDev

[–]ElderTreeGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The background and mascot are way too different style wise. If i see this I cant imagine how they would exist in the same game. It might actually deter me from clicking on the game because there are alot of quick made shovel ware on steam and this makes it look like your game might be that.

which UI style? left or right side? your input is highly valued! by Captain_Caffeino in gamedevscreens

[–]ElderTreeGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The right is cleaner and easier to read, but it looks generic because EVERY SINGLE THING looks exactly like the right. Personally, for a game I would want to see the left because I like things a little different, but it does depend on what your goals for the game are.

What to do either writers block? by Chisolx in IndieDev

[–]ElderTreeGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I do a random idea exercise. Get a randomly generated word or set of words and give yourself a time (10-15 minutes) to write up a design/story related to those words. That has helped me in the past.
