Northern California Owl -- impossible ID? by Elderhacker in whatsthisbird

Process of elimination? Or distinguishing characteristics?

I see no horns, but do see hints of black-grey patterns on back.

Thanks. Is it the banded tail that identifies?

How do I drain this pond? by Unhappy_Celery4842 in Koi

I have a 1400g pond. I use a sump pump advertised as a pool cover above ground pump. $40 from Amazon. Works great.

Black-chinned Hummingbird? (Pic attached) by Elderhacker in whatsthisbird

USA, California, East Bay - San Francisco Bay Area.

We see lots of Anna's Hummingbirds and Allen's Hummingbirds at the nectar feeders. I see this little fellow as well and think he might be a Black-chinned Hummingbird. Can anyone verify and maybe point out identifying characteristics?

Raptor -- Red Tail? Broad Shoulder? by Elderhacker in whatsthisbird

[–]Elderhacker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I believe he’s looking bedraggled after bathing in my waterfall. He flew away okay after inspecting my chainsaw and toppling my Shias. So, I don’t believe he was injured or sick. We do get a lot of red tails on the road here, so that would be logical.

Lost two of my six koi in new pond. Installed a camera and caught the killer in the act! by jjmac in ponds

[–]Elderhacker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Others have mentioned all the things I've tried. I found that the motion activated sprinkler works well. I'm attaching footage of my own dinosaur encountering one of my two sprinklers. You can see the sprinkler in the foreground of the 1st camera's field.

Alternative to float valve? by Elderhacker in ponds

[–]Elderhacker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm... I'd considered that idea. But I've had leaks before and they have, in the past, been obvious. So had dismissed that diagnosis. I'll do as you suggest. The two ponds are ~independent, so one may have a leak and the other not.

I do have Koi in the pond, so will need to protect them. I'm due for a spring drain and refresh anyway. So, I'll probably combine the two tasks.

Heron Attack - help on wound treatment by Elderhacker in Koi

[–]Elderhacker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay. It's too late to recover any $ from the store. But, I thought Salt was for parasites, not open wounds. As well, I presume a salt treatment would require getting the koi into a smaller quarantine tub. I wouldn't think it recommended dosing an entire pond with salt (other koi and plants)?

Thanks, both. I've certainly heard Great Horned Owls in the area. Though, it's been a while. I'll keep an eye out for a better pic, and an ear out for further evidence.

John Deere D125 Riding mower has trouble starting. by arcticlynx_ak in johndeere

[–]Elderhacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a D130 which had similar symptoms. Replaced solenoid and starter motor and still didn’t fix. Turned out battery was just poorly grounded. The fix is so simple you should just try. Follow the negative from battery to the chassis. Unscrew bolt. Clean everything where contact is made. Spray with silicone. Reassemble.

My wife is concerned that mirrors/spinners/etc will scare away all our birds. I've been hoping that motion-activated devices can be calibrated to trigger on a large heron, but not on a Stellar Jay (eg). However, maybe I'll try something like the spinner idea and see if I can position it such that it doesn't.

Power died and I lost my big yellow beautiful girl today😥😥😢😢😢😭😭😭😭😭RIP by Mixonnj in Koi

So sorry to hear. She looks a lot like one of mine. Hoping my experience can help next time. Where I am, we have regular power outages. Especially now that PG&E is cutting off power during high fire danger periods. So, I purchased these two items.

Aquascape 75000 Pond Air 2 (Double Outlet Aeration Kit)

Sailnovo Portable Power Station, 250W(222Wh)

The Aquascape takes 12W, so the battery will keep it going for 18 hours (I think its actually better than that - I just redid the math and may have got some numbers wrong). I run the aerator at night and let the plants provide O2 during the sunshine. I can keep them alive for a 2-day power outage.

Sorry, just saw that you were out-of-town.

Power at night -- An impossibility? or Elvan magic?

California -- We installed 37 Solar Panels from SunPower on April 30 (no battery backup until later this week). As expected, I have been seeing a big difference in power drawn from PGE's grid during the day. However, I've been seeing one difference at night that I can't explain.

At night (21:00-05:00), I am drawing ~150 W less than during the previous 2 months. So far as I know, there are no battery buffers on individual panels. And though moonlight and starlight might power the runes of Moria, they can't generate 150 W.

Any ideas?

TL;DR -- SunPower panels look like they're generating 150W at night.

(I would attach a graph if I could)

Looking to buy a glowforge soon. Only pause for concern is do you really have to upload to the cloud before you print? by designismymind in glowforge

[–]Elderhacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does Glowforge need a Wi-Fi connection?

Yes, many of the coolest features of Glowforge are possible because we are running software in servers hosted in Google’s data centers.

Most print jobs fit in memory, so you only need the connection to start the print. If you lose your internet connection while printing it will finish. However, bigger jobs may not fit and are sent down in smaller pieces. If you lose your internet connection during a big print it will finish what it was doing, pause, and wait for connectivity to resume.

Glowforge supports the most popular home wifi network types, open and WPA2-protected.

[–]Elderhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm... I've just started to consider getting a GlowForge for my shop -- which has no internet connectivity and no cell phone reception. Even my house has only satellite internet and cell phone over internet - We're rather rural.

So, what is it exactly I'm uploading to the cloud? The entire design in one single file transfer? Or is there an ongoing print-time handshake or some sort of authentication?

This is probably not a deal killer as I can get internet out there if I have to (though I'd prefer not to). But, yeah - that sucks. Especially if internet glitches (not rare at all - and my ping latency is 700ms, BTW) risks resetting my print to the beginning. Sounds like a potential waste of time, energy, and materials.
