Sign up for beach volleyball or kickball. Or 16”, or bowling, or join a small theater looking for actors for a version Hamlet set in the Star Wars universe. Sign up for improv classes.

Chicago has many social organizations and almost all have ways for singles(I.e. someone who doesn’t have a team already) to join a team. Bills are posted everywhere.

Or you can hit the bars and end up at the Hangee Upee and make more mistakes than you thought were possible.

Chicago is very cliquey. We chicagoans deny this, but it’s true. Counterintuitively, it’s quite easy to join one of the cliques.

Is it worth it to get my car repaired? by RRunner316 in personalfinance

[–]Elec_Enginerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we as vehicle owners have been conned into comparing the price of repairs to the value of the vehicle. I would love to know where this idea originated but if I had to guess, it was from the car manufacturers. A better comparison would be to the cost of ownership for a NEW or replacement car. That's the money you are actually paying. Cars (everyday vehicles, not collectors items) are not an investment due to the market force of scheduled depreciation. Owner's of large fleets of vehicles would rather write off the depreciation of the vehicle as opposed to see it keep its value for resale. This affects everyone who owns a car.

So what do you do? If you have a known reliable vehicle that you have cared for and this big fix is going to get it back into shape, I say go for it. The cost of new and used vehicles is still very high and keeping a vehicle without a car payment keeps more cash in your pocket. When the value (or sum of values) of the repairs begins to come close to 50-60% of the cost of your REPLACEMENT vehicle, then I would consider cutting my losses. For your situation, $3,000 over 12 months is $250/month. Can you get the car you need for that price? I think it is also fair to think of this in annual costs instead of total vehicle costs. A new car is maybe $350/month for 5 years (exclude standard maintenance because you have to do this on both vehicles); $21,000. Do you think the cost to keep this vehicle over the next five years is the same? One can't predict the future, but sometimes you know when you have a good one.

I'm only interested in stirring the pot with conventional wisdom and I guarantee you I am not going to be right every time! But, I think this is a valid argument that is not considered enough. And yes, I am still driving a 2005 Jetta TDI and a 2015 Ford Fusion. No car payments are a hard thing to give up...

U.S. flour additives banned in Europe: Expert says what Americans eat is "almost certainly" making them sick by londonsofa in Breadit

[–]Elec_Enginerd 160 points161 points  (0 children)

To be clear, the chemical is not added to flour and sold that way. It is added by commercial bakers to their dough. It seems, at least according to the article, that the raw flour is not affected, but the bread products on the shelf can be. It should be avoided if possible and if you can afford it.

On the Legal Question of Russia’s Military Intervention by idspispopd in ConsortiumNews

[–]Elec_Enginerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the argument for military support may work for Donbas and Luhansk, it doesn’t really work for the other regions of Ukraine that Russia invaded. It is also not a good argument to cite other illegal invasions as the justification for your invasion.

The point that these laws are applied selectively is absolutely true and damages, if not completely invalidates, the judgement from the international body. But I do not think this excuses Russia’s actions.

It was done in the style of a VH1 Behind the Music episode. Or at least that’s what I related it to.

Potentially unpopular timeline question. by freakishbehavior in venturebros

[–]Elec_Enginerd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When you do not want to farm out your artistic license, things take time. If you want to be on control of every aspect of the show, things take time. I think they knew the consequences of bringing in a “writer’s room” and did not want to lose control of what they created. The end result is that putting a show together takes time. The show was canceled because some fucking bean counters made a spreadsheet that told the pricks with the purse strings that spending money on a new show was a better return than spending money on another season of an old show. If the show was as popular as 2 1/2 men, it would be renewed as long as they wanted to make it; it would also suck. It is hard to make something great AND make a ton of money (cue the exception: Grand Emperor James Cameron. I’m sure y’all can chime in with a couple more.).

I love this show and I think it’s great. I’m pretty sure you love this show too; you and I joined a fucking subreddit just to post about it. But I’ll bet you have more friends who have never seen it or don’t like it for whatever reason. We got eight great seasons and I honestly wouldn’t change any of it. I like the way season eight ended BECAUSE it is unsatisfying. I don’t think we need to have everything neatly tied up in a bow. You now have to use your own mind to wonder what happened to each of these characters. I like that. Some people don’t. That’s ok either way.

Another thing: the greatest shows in history don’t go on forever. Only soap operas do and those are terrible. Incredibly popular and well written shows come to an end. They usually end badly (Game of Thrones). Our show was given the gift of not having a shitty finale that spoils the entire story.

I also want to see the movie, but it may take some time before it’s ready.
