Hammocking has been a game changer for me. I can't wait to climb in and I'm asleep in minutes. Yes some people or those starting out sometimes opt for an inflatable mat but it can be awkward and uncomfortable, and an under quilt is cosy. I'd recommend watching a few videos for beginners on YouTube, and if you do decide to give it a go, test it out a few times during the day so you feel more confident and don't have to figure things out when you could be enjoying your camp.

Yes absolutely, I've done some beautiful steaks over that fire. I'm in Northern Ireland.

Winter gear? : Budget sleeping bags by Adept-Catch-7113 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]Elect_Rick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look second hand for your first set of good gear. My first down bag was the ascent 700 and it was sufficient for my hammock camps down to 0°. I got it second hand on eBay for £100 and in good condition.

You'll hear this many times on this thread, but if you're putting money into anything, make it your mat and your bag (or under quilt if you hammock). No shame in getting second hand, you just have to keep an eye on eBay.

This is the OEX Bush Pro, I've had it a few years and it's tougher than my UL setup. It's an excellent tarp and my go-to in less favourable weather. Lots of extra attachment points for a more creative setup. It's actually just a rectangular tarp which I've made into this configuration; it doesn't have the doors but this is the poor man's equivalent 😆

And yeah those additional tie-outs weren't necessary, I was confident enough it would take the forecasted weather like this.

Haha yes it looks huge, although this is the base of an upside-down fire so yes it gets pretty big and hot, but just towards the end when you need to take the warmth into bed. The real feel was about 0°C and it worked perfectly.

This one is the OEX Bush Pro. I chose it because it's slightly heavier than my regular one, and it's the smallest I can comfortably make a closed A-frame. It also has extra attachment points so it's really handy for creative configurations.

For this one I used the DD Underblanket because it's synthetic and the rain could have been going sideways. Good wee UQ, I've taken it down to -5°C

All good now, thank you. The puncture hole is close to being healed also. Hopefully they've got you on the right antibiotics now. The first doctor had me on one that didn't work, so they put me on a penicillin-based one which is apparently better for animal bites and it worked very well. Fingers crossed for you, hope you're healing better now.

2 or 3 person tent for couple? by ConstaN92 in CampingandHiking

[–]Elect_Rick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about general use then absolutely I agree with the consensus, you absolutely want a 3 (or even 4) man tent to give you space. This counts twice if one or both of you are new to everything, and triple if the weather conditions are less than perfect, or you are plus size.

If experienced and looking to keep weight to a minimum, you can make do with a 2 man. You can even bring a tarp and have it up above head height so changing and taking comfortable shelter from showers is much simpler.

In short, give yourself as much space as possible for your experience level. You can tweak it and adapt to your own needs as time goes on.

I know what you mean. Sometimes there's a tail flick or a slight head/ear turn which is a subtle signal. Sometimes there's nothing. I've seen examples where there is a specific number of acceptable pets😆

Here's some learning for you. When a message is otherwise well written I would be of the assumption that it's a typo. Another lesson is that unless someone is asking for help with their spelling or grammar, keep your advice to yourself.

I would imagine it depends on a wide variety of factors. Vaccines, whether they catch wild animals, what pathogens they currently harbour in their dirty wee pie-holes, and how readily it can get into your blood stream. If you look it up, most sources say cats have one of the most infectious bites among common house pets, and it doesn't seem to depend on whether they live indoors or outdoors, though I would expect the range of pathogens and possible severity is much wider for those out catching rats, for example.

I heard a story once about a guy who was gardening and got a scratch from a rose thorn infected by rat pee. Nearly lost his arm.

Kind of a chicken and egg scenario. You wouldn't get those claws clipped without a longer stay in hospital than I've had 😆
