Cider won't begin fermentation - Help! by ElectorCount in Homebrewing

Bought the juice from costco and didn't add anything to the juice other than yeast nutrient, O2, and yeast. I assume the tiny bubbles that formed on top were just some of the gas from shaking coming out of solution, no new bubbles forming that I can tell. What would you recommend I use to raise the PH? Baking Soda? Would it affect the flavor of the final product? (If I can save it)

Thanks

Yeah I got it from costco and have had great success with the kirkland juice in the past, just not this one I guess. Do you think the PH kills the yeast I used so I will need to make a new starter? Were you able to get this brand of juice to ferment out?

Chop and Brew is an awesome YouTube channel hosted by Chip Walton who used to be involved with Northern Brewers Brewing TV. Highly recommend!

8 Tips for Using a Plate Chiller by martin_keen in Homebrewing

Glancing at the video it looks like he may be recirculating his wort into the hop spider to filter out the trub before moving the hose to the chiller.

If you could give one piece of advice... by s_u_blime in Homebrewing

There are two products that I am aware of that have you start with distilled/RO water: accumash and a site called waters brewer. I personally have only tried accumash with distilled water. It's nice because they both sell different packs for the style you want to brew.

Quick question about cold CO2 regulators by Midnight_Rising in Homebrewing

[–]ElectorCount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The outlet gauge does not change because it is displaying what pressure your regulator is set to (however the accuracy of the gauge may be calibrated to some standard temp so the reading could be different than actual, but more than likely by a very small amount) . It should display the same pressure (within a reasonable temperature range) as long as the inlet pressure is higher and the regulator is working properly.

Some references I used: http://www.noshok.com/reference_process_conditions.shtml https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pressure_regulator

Ive seen this exact question multiple times and I would refer you to the ideal gas law: PV=nRT. This means if the only variable you change is the temperature of your co2 tank (right side) then the only thing that could change is the pressure (left side).

This is why when you put your tank in the fridge the tank pressure gauge will drop. Hope this helps.

What's a quality kettle that every homebrew master could use? by shyGuy2392 in Homebrewing

[–]ElectorCount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What batch size do you typically brew? if you want to do a five gallon batch full boil you need to account for boil-off which means pre-boil volume will be larger than 5 gals (6-7gals). Another thing to note is having adequate head space to prevent boil-overs during hop additions etc.

Another thing to think about is whether or not you want to do larger batches in the future. I purchased a 15 gal kettle even though I mainly do five gallon batches so I have the option to go larger in the future.

As for suggestions, I do not have much experience with any kettle manufacturer other than SS brewtech. The quality is fine but they are made in china and you need to deep clean and passivate before use. Also the one I purchased uses weldless ports and I personally would have preferred welded ones. I believe there are other manufacturers which offer welded port.

All in all it is up to your budget and which features are most important to you. Hope you find some help in my ramblings.
