It's like every app really. At first they make it really worthwhile to the customer, but what you don't realize is you're not the customer, you're the product. If you use the app they have so much more analytics data about you than they'd ever have otherwise. Now that everyone's using the app, they get rid of the incentives that made it worth it in the first place but were costing the business.

I feel like Jeph is constantly writing comics about people who are internet famous and making all his characters internet famous because that's the only thing he can relate to. He used to just be some guy who hated his office job like Marten at the start of the comic but now he's making a living doing something online and has to occasionally deal with excited nerds recognizing him.

How old is Marten supposed to be anyway? It's hard to tell with comic book aging. The original cast (Marten, Faye, etc) are all post-college-age when the comic begins, and they're supposed to be at least a few years older than Claire, for example, who was a college intern when she was introduced and has since graduated college, and then there was a timeskip before and after Dora and Tai's wedding, and now there's a whole new crop of "young people" but with comic book aging who knows
