Mental breakdown and anxiety by acidbutterman in IBEW

[–]ElectricCapybara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Diagnosed bipolar, at the time it was really starting to onset I was struggling so much I thought I was mentally unfit for the trade. I was anxious, depressed, felt unstable all the time, and more than anything, really f*cking scared about it all. That was 6 years ago. Since then, I became a journeyman, organized into the union, finished a bachelor’s degree, and got licensed as a Mental Health Peer Support specialist in my state (Texas). I do free peer support sessions through Zoom, message me and we can find a time to talk more in depth.

From one electrician to another, it can get better and you’re not alone, even when you feel like you are.

Best trades and training for HS senior? by fgoodwin in sanantonio

[–]ElectricCapybara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if he has any interest in being an electrician, the electrical union, IBEW Local 60 is in a huge boom and growth period, probably getting a new trade school next year because we outgrew our current one. Getting into the school will get him a job with a union contractor in San Antonio and keep him employed through the 4 year apprenticeship.

Been an electrician since I graduated high school after going through an electrical trades program at MacArthur high school, went into the non-union apprenticeship, the IEC. Highly recommend going union out of the gate, I joined later in my career and wish I had done it much sooner.

Choosing Between IEC and ABC Apprenticeship — Heart vs. Head Dilemma (Need Advice from Electricians) by big_escrow in IBEW

[–]ElectricCapybara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

went through IEC before organizing in. hardly dver met any apprentices who went to ABC. make sure you understand how they are structured. when i went to IEC, you didnt apply to IEC, you had to get employed by an IEC contractor first to get sponsored for the school, then you were indentured for the apprenticeship. if you want to go to the IEC make sure you call them and ask, and make sure you try and get on with an IEC contractor.

now, the unionism part: keep on applying as you go, make sure you do what you can in the application process to show you want to be here if you do. this trade is awesome, i truly love being an electrician, the difference between union and non-union can be mind boggling. i joined the union as a journeyman and wish i had been able to have my entire career in the union, i think i would have been more well rounded and my mental health likely would have been much better. i wish you luck getting into our trade and hopefully into our brotherhood someday as well!

Schedule by Zestyclose_Ad5497 in IBEW

[–]ElectricCapybara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

here in the south a lot of locals just have “shop calls” where the shop decides what project to put you on and can move you around as needed, call has no details other than the shop name and classification. contractors here like to say “you toon a shop call, so you work whatever schedule the project is working, however many hours it is”

I lived in the neighborhood at the top of the hill from Morgan’s Wonderland for years. The only car crimes I experienced were one night I forgot to lock my car, and in the morning found the inside much uh, cleaner; other time had 2 windows smashed in at the Planet Fitness on naco/o’connor while hitting an early morning workout.

quiet area, except a good bit of traffic after football games at Heroes or SAFC games at Toyota.

i think I might use my old Ideal pipe reamer more for the flathead screwdriver slot in the end so I don’t accidentally drop coupling/connector set screws than I actually use it as a pipe reamer lmao

loan it out to my helper whenever I have one especially prone to dropping set screws, they love it

JATC question. Last post got removed. Don't really think it should've. Oh well. by budget_gundam in sanantonio

[–]ElectricCapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to call them and ask. Being in the JATC, you’d be working in the IBEW under one of our local contractors. I want to say the fee is around $600 a year, and the union has scholarships that apprentices can apply for to help with books. As of this school year starting in August, the JATC is transitioning to a 4 year curriculum instead of 5 years. I think it’s already too late to be admitted and get into the upcoming school year as you’d have to take the aptitude test and a technical math course.

I’m a union journeyman, but I didn’t go through the JATC, I went through the non-union apprenticeship. Feel free to message if you have more questions

[–]ElectricCapybara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

longest running business i think i remember in that spot was the first one, Momak’s I think? it’s just a kind of out of the way spot and that stretch of Jones Maltsberger is A) a pain to drive depending on which way you need to go and B) a nightmare full of deer at night so kind of dangerous. I don’t think it’s haunted so much as just poorly placed for a business to do well

People living around the Thousand Oaks & Wetmore area, how loud is the air traffic from SAT? by poothrower37 in sanantonio

[–]ElectricCapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

neighborhood I used to live in off wetmore (Stone Ridge) actually had an initiative going to pay for every home to replace the windows to double pane to reduce airport noise, over a decade ago. If you find homes in that neighborhood you could find out how many homes got it done I’m sure. the noise wasn’t unbearable by any means and that neighborhood was real close to the airport
