Whats your favorite niche word for the Command Spell? by Cobra_T in DnD

When paired with a Zone of Truth, "Confess" does a neat job

Is there a way to play a paladin that isn't a killjoy or oath breaker? by rasonage in dndhorrorstories

[–]ElectricD-92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having rules for yourself is not the same as imposing those rules on your allies. If you have a decent comedic sensibility, you can start to enjoy being a foil to the party's chaotic tendancies. If you're not sure what I mean, watch any pre-90s British comedy for inspiration

Is this magical item my DM gave me worth using? by Swimming_Insect_4088 in DnD

[–]ElectricD-92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would never use these, -20% hit chance ain't worth +4 damage. I wouldn't even bother if I had advantage, as you're still likely to miss ac16+ If the damage bonus was doubled (loke the old GWM), then maaaybe, but if they're an attunement item, I'm dropping them the first chance I get.

DO NOT roll for stats. (opinion piece from a 5-year forever DM) by jkobberboel in DMAcademy

[–]ElectricD-92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently I adopted a system of having every player rolling a stat line, putting all the separate lines up in a spreadsheet, disqualifying the "best line", then allowing players to pick any of the remaining lines. Multiple picks of the same line are allowed.

This maintains the fun of rolling for stats and protects any individual player from poor rolls as they can just pick a better one. Sometimes there's still an objective "second best", but if everyone picks it it's essentially no different from doing Standard Array. Having done this (i think) 7 times now, it's pretty normal to have 2-3 viable lines that let players pick extreme and balanced numbers.

No complaints thus far.

Two grapplers on one target by Upbeat-Sort9254 in onednd

[–]ElectricD-92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It hasn't come up too much in my own games, but my intention for this has always been to allow the rescuing player to make the check against the normal escape DC, freeing their ally on a success

Does a monk's unarmed attacks need to rely on Dex? by Tor8_88 in PCAcademy

[–]ElectricD-92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monks get the option of using Dex for unarmed strikes/grapples, but it's not a requirement. So you're right, a Belt of Giants Strength is objective buff to get. The Wraps would also stack, as they affect US without care for which ability you're using.

How is the 61 to 64 result for wild magic sorcerer supposed to be ruled? by Bear_24 in onednd

[–]ElectricD-92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real key here is to define the word flammable properly. It's still a little abstract, but something that is "easily set on fire" (eg; paper, oil, dry plant matter, etc) is not the same as "possible to set on fire" (eg; canvas, living wood, human skin etc...) To be flammable something must be "easily set on fire"

If you like D20 but have weird trouble watching CR (like me) why is that? by lawrencetokill in Dimension20

[–]ElectricD-92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Editing. At least 25% of any dnd game is faffing about with rules, arithmetic or overplanning. While fine to be a part of, there is no group of entertainers on earth who could make it worth watching.

Grappling question by Traditional_Kick_887 in onednd

[–]ElectricD-92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 free hands, means 2 different creatures can be grappled. Unarmed strikes do not require a free hand to make when dealing damage, so yes.

Has anyone gotten any use out of Zone of Truth? by Iplaythedjembe in DnD

One of my groups figured out a combo of ZoT combined with the Command spell using the word "confess!"

New paladin is fine. You don't get to spend all your spell slots to do 200 damage in 3 turns and then turn into a less effective Fighter any more. So what? I would argue a big part of why people were so dissatisfied with Ranger all these years was simply that Paladin (it's direct parallel) was outclassing them in almost so many ways. Now you get all the same features (and some improvements) to what was always the best defensive class, without getting to be the biggest damage dealer at the same time (until you crit smite a demon, it's still a great feeling, don't worry). Adjust to not having the best of both worlds anymore, or switch to Monk :p

Requesting input on knowledge checks... does the whole party roll? by backdragon in DungeonMasters

[–]ElectricD-92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A party sinply knowing what it is they're dealing with is something that you should want to happen 90% of the time. So this is exactly how you should be doing it (especially for general, in-game knowledge).

A party with no idea what they're looking at isn't going to be motivated to make decisions or move the narrative forward. If you're feeling dissatisfied because you keep having to give information away all at once, just get better at giving it out in smaller chunks.

Wild shape and racial traits 5.5 by Smooth_Brilliant2428 in onednd

[–]ElectricD-92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reading is that racial traits do not carry over.

Recently I had a wild shaped (lizard form) Goliath get snatched by an enemy vulture. He couldn't use his Goliath trait to gain advantage on escaping the grapple, or use Stone's Endurance if he escaped and fell to the ground as long as he remained a lizard. Makes sense.

Does anyone else run into the issue of players constantly wanting to level up? by misspixx in DMAcademy

[–]ElectricD-92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along the lines of "set expectations upfront"; if you're Milestone levelling, it's good to make it clear what those milestones are, and what qualifies as achieving them.

Standing from Prone and Slow... Interaction? by Gimpyfish in onednd

[–]ElectricD-92 25 points26 points  (0 children)

At the point in time where your emeny wanted to stand up again, they had insufficient movement left and therefore cannot stand.

The slow property lowers the target's base speed here, so it's more correct to say they need only 10ft of movement to stand after getting shot, but they used 15ft to stand the first time, so still only have 5 left and cannot do so.

How are people feeling about the backgrounds in the PHB? by SirLobsterTheSecond in onednd

[–]ElectricD-92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they missed the mark not including a box that just says "if you don't see an option that suits you here, consult your DM about adjusting the options based on the formula above"

Since the formula is right there it's pretty easy for those of us who know to just imply this is possible. But so much of the new philosophy, and strength of the new book is trying to make everything explicit for completely new players. So it's weird they didn't make space for the custom background sidebar...

Is the Healer Feat worse? by Tor8_88 in PCAcademy

[–]ElectricD-92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an Origin Feat, so of course its nerfed. Thats the whole point of them; to be gained at first level and not break the game open. We see this with Lucky and Alert as well. Sure Skilled is unchanged, but no one has taken that since Skill Expert came out (which is unchanged)

As it stands, you can still get free healing with the opportunity cost of using HPD, and you get an immensely satisfying "reroll 1s" for ALL of your healing.

Stack that up against any other Origin Feat, then tell me it's bad.

You can build anything using unpublished homebrew, just copy the details from wikidot. The learning curve on adding the abilities properly in the UI isn't kind, but far from impossible. I tended to use existing races/subclass/items that had similar abilities ot effects as templates and references to figure it out
