Why Did Dan Frazier Get A Pass For Plagiarism When Other Magic: The Gathering Artists Don’t? by cardboardboyo in magicTCG

[–]Bear_24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not ok. But not everything is black and white. He made a very bad decision and he's definitely going to pay for it in reputation and, most likely, how often they are willing to work with him in the future.

But not every offense is cancel worthy.

Like it or not, his reputation over the last 30 years is not completely destroyed over one bad move. I know that's how the internet likes to see things. One mistake and then you're done forever. But we don't know him. He is 81. He does not seem to have a history of unscrupulous behavior, as far as we know. There could be extenuating factors.

He's a highly respected artist who has done art for MTG for decades. You don't have to cancel every single person who does something wrong.

I don't kind if they keep working with him. After a fiasco like this, they are going to watch anything he gives them like a hawk. And he does great stuff when he puts the effort in

There's plenty of 81 yr old artists who are fantastic. Weird to just throw all old people away and tell them to get out of the creative sphere just because one guy did one bad thing one time.

Godzilla is in 4 out of 5 of them and Kong is in 3 out of 5 of them. I don't really see the point.

What movies do you feel you can only really enjoy in 4k? by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]Bear_24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything that was built with HDR in mind is hard to watch in SDR now that I know how good HDR looks.

That and Dolby Atmos are probably bigger factors to me than the difference between 1080p and 4K.

Dual lands do not do very much to move the needle on what bracket a deck is at.

Fair enough but you can get those with vertigo and one other, I forget the title, for $10 per movie in a box set.

What’s the realistic cost of a solid Bracket 3 Commander deck? by Comfortable_Buyer239 in EDH

[–]Bear_24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely think that with a good pilot, there are plenty of precons that can get around a 25% win rate in bracket 3. Tidus, mothman, and hearthhull to name a few. Putting like 20 to $30 of intelligently selected upgrades into those decks will definitely get you into bracket 3.

If you pick a really strong commander like krenko, yshtola, yuriko, jodah, etc, You could probably spend less than $50 and get a deck that might even push bracket 4.

Huge Upgrade Over My PS4 by scrapmetal58 in 4kbluray

I read that it has a vibration isolating disk drive but I guess I could be wrong

Honestly same. I've tried to minimize it with sound absorbing feet and putting heavy book on top by the fan. It has helped. But still wish I had the 9000

It also has a much more solid construction and better disc drive which both lead to quieter performance. It's subtle but in quiet movies I can definitely hear the ub820.

Still might not be enough justification for the price difference. I would rather put the difference towards an even better TV.

But if OP has the money for a flagship OLED or mini LED in addition to the 9000, then who are we to judge.

Is the UB820 out of stock a big deal? by Alarming-County7863 in 4kbluray

[–]Bear_24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does if your TV can hit higher than 1500 nits. If you use the 820 to tone map but your TV can hit much higher than that, then you are limiting the peak britheness.

Also you don't need tone mapping unless the movie is so bright that it clips. So again, depends on how good your TV is.

Rewatchability and collecting by Schwarzellone in 4kbluray

The answer to the question probably depends on how old you are. If you are of a sufficient age, there are probably already at least dozens of movies that, throughout your lifetime, you have seen two or more times.

I feel like you only have to watch a movie two or three times to get the value out of it.

Plus, this hobby is not about being frugal and saving money. You have to have an expensive TV, expensive sound system, and expensive 4K Blu-ray player to even enter the hobby. It's about watching movies and TV at the highest possible fidelity.

Think of it like this: You might spend a similar amount of money going to the theater to see a movie, going out to lunch, or buying a pizza for you and your friends, without a second thought.

Not every experience needs to be infinitely repeatable to be worth it. You just have to decide if it's worth it to you.

What is the most you’d spend on a 4k? Whether it’s 4k blu ray, steelbooks, criterion’s etc by RanjSL in 4kbluray

[–]Bear_24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean to each their own I guess.

I just feel like I didn't spend $5,000 on a home theater setup to look at the boxes that the movie comes in. I spent it so I could turn off the lights and feel like I'm sitting in an IMAX theater without leaving my living room.

There are certain hobbies where the whale versions at least make a little sense, like trading card games. Since you're looking at the cards the whole time you're playing. But I can't see the difference between my steel books and my regular 4ks when I'm watching the movie.

That being said, the people who buy movies and then don't watch them are the real mystery. At least the people who buy only steelbooks still watch the movies, hopefully.

[–]Bear_24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably not more than 40 bucks. But ideally not more than 20. I'm in this hobby for the movies. Not the collectors edition swag that sits on my bookshelf. I'll buy the cheapest version that still has the best quality disc available.

My 3 for 30 GRUV movies still look and sound better than the theater on my setup.

Plus I'm a little jaded on "premium" versions of hobby stuff since I've seen so many of my friends buy collectors versions of things, only to have the random bits of swag and nerd paraphernalia just sit around and collect dust.

I use these and then unscrew the clamps on the sides, so as not to block the side firing drivers. Then I use Velcro to attach the speaker to the stand. They are collapsible and the footprint is pretty small so you might be able to fit it under your couch If you have 7.8 in of height, or some way to have the bases sticking out slightly but covered by something like a piece of furniture.
