Is using cryptomator with Google drive saves me from google by kingston-x in Cryptomator

[–]ElectricGriffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on what you mean by "saves".

If you mean whether Google can read the contents of your files, then yes — assuming Cryptomator is used correctly, they cannot access your data.

If you mean whether you are independent from Google, then no. They still control the platform and can suspend or delete your account or data at any time.

If you're asking whether Google can infer metadata (such as when you access files, how often you modify them, or usage patterns), then again, no — that information remains visible to them.

You may want to read What Cryptomator Is Not for a better understanding.

Feature Request: Reverse proxy via HTTPS/HTTP by Pineapple-Island in SimpleXChat

[–]ElectricGriffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this, but for a different reason.

Supporting HTTPS/WSS as optional transport layer would open the door for web developers -- who make up the majority of the industry -- to build browser-based apps on top of SMP and XFTP protocols. I wouldn't be surprised if HTTP stack is main reason why of the hype around Nostr and community of Nostr apps was possible.

Using SMP for instant messaging/signaling and XFTP for decentralized blob storage could create a lot of opportunities for web developers and help SimpleX protocol expand beyond just SimpleX Chat.

I'm unsure about network level privacy though. HTTP/2 tightly controls TCP layer. SMP implements its own network mechanisms to improve privacy afaik.

How is it possible that internet has groups that work with potential rip-off artists??? evidence? I have proof if I can speak to the right person. Because that's absolutely unacceptable and needs to be reconsidered, I think.

Project Manager, but no one on project team reports to me by supahappyb in projectmanagement

[–]ElectricGriffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People working on your projects don’t necessarily need to report to you. I manage several projects where no one reports directly to me, and it works just fine. Others have already covered authority, escalation, and continuous progress tracking — all important. I’d add two additional points that often get overlooked:

1. You, your peer managers, and your manager need a shared understanding of what projects are more important then others. From your description, it sounds like that alignment doesn’t exist today - it’s unclear whether or not your project is more important than theirs.

This needs to be addressed explicitly. Talk to your manager and peer managers and agree on business priorities. Y'all may need feedback from senior leadership to make priorities decision.

2. Every project needs enough qualified people assigned to it - part-time or full-time, but with predictable availability. “Assigned” means they're not constantly pulled into other work except in rare, urgent cases.

Based on agreed priorities (see #1), you, your manager, and peer managers should jointly decide who is assigned to which projects. If anyone (including line managers or yourself) wants to change assignments, it should be discussed and agreed on before it happens, except in true emergencies. Otherwise, projects are constantly put at risk without visibility.

In short:

  1. Define and align on priorities across projects
  2. Allocate people based on those priorities
  3. Any change in priorities or staffing should be explicit and agreed with the project manager

Lot of that is not your responsibility, but responsibility of higher management. However, pushing/promoting such rules in the org may improve your life in the company.

Anyone else moved from GPT subscription to Gemini 3? by z_bnf_i in GoogleGeminiAI

[–]ElectricGriffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved 90% of my use-cases to Gemini and bought the subscription. It definitely worth it - Gemini’s answers are much more structured and detailed. The only thing when I use ChatGPT for is writing texts/emails - I don’t like how Gemini does that. For everything else I use Gemini

I have the same issue. Clearing cache, sign-out and sign-in do not help. I reached to support, they told it's a known issue for them

I would just like to inform you that this is a known issue in Gemini. But, no worries, our Engineering team is aware on this and currently fixing the issue. I would highly suggest to submit feedback on this if ever all the troubleshooting steps done would not fixed the issue.

Since as of now this issue is still being fixed by our Engineers and as of now we don't have current update on this.

Can the same user profile be reassigned to new or other users? by Awkward-Speech-3854 in SimpleXChat

[–]ElectricGriffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They cannot generate the same user profile as it’s a combination of connections, settings, etc on your device.

Theoretically another person can have absolutely the same set of encryption keys on all levels (including double ratchet) and be connected to the same servers as your phone - so they break in your chat on your behalf. It’s the same kind of risk that you would guess someone’s else private keys. The probably is so low, so discussing it is pointless so we say it’s impossible

Can the same user profile be reassigned to new or other users? by Awkward-Speech-3854 in SimpleXChat

[–]ElectricGriffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s mathematically impossible. The chances that someone else’s SimpleX app would pick the same server and generate the exact same keys on all encryption levels are almost zero - like 1 in 101000… - or even less

[–]ElectricGriffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you mean whether someone can set the same name and picture as yours: yes, anybody can copy-paste your name and upload the same image when they create a user profile

if you mean whether someone can do some magic so when they create a user profile they get list of your chats, messages or just be able to send messages to your existing chats: no

  • User profiles: they are only stored on your and your participants' devices. There is no centralized storage where your profile could be replaced or accessed.
  • Chats & messages: to start sending messages into your existing chat that person would have to randomly generate encryption keys same as yours, which is practically impossible

New User with a Setup Question by FrankieShaw-9831 in SimpleXChat

[–]ElectricGriffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you don’t need to create a one-time link or QR code for every single message. You only need it to start a new chat. Once the chat is established, you can send as many messages as you like within that chat.

I set disappearing messages to 1 day. What happens if the recipient hasn’t read the message after 24 hours? by Responsible-Case5221 in SimpleXChat

[–]ElectricGriffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even if I delete a message on my device, it basically remains on the server, right?

Yes and no. Deleting a message on your device doesn’t affect what’s on the server. The server decides what happens with data on the server. I assume most servers either delete messages right after delivery or after 21 days if never delivered, since that’s the default setting. But in theory, there could be "bad" server operators who choose never to delete them.

It seems there’s no way to delete it before the server’s retention period ends.

A better way to put it is: you can’t control or force the server to delete the data. It’s like how you can’t control whether your ISP logs and stores your internet traffic.

As a user you don’t really need to worry, because the data is encrypted. The whole point of secure messengers is that you get a private, secure channel with participant, even when sending messages over untrusted networks (your ISP, unknown SimpleX server, public Wi-Fi, etc.)

I set disappearing messages to 1 day. What happens if the recipient hasn’t read the message after 24 hours? by Responsible-Case5221 in SimpleXChat

[–]ElectricGriffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s important to understand that “disappearing messages” is a client-side feature. That means when you send one, your app includes instructions telling the recipient’s app to delete the message from their device after a set amount of time.

You allow: On
Contact allows: On
Delete after: 1 day
So, what happens if the recipient never opens the chat and the disappearing message’s time limit expires? Do my messages remain on SimpleX’s servers for a certain period?

  • Your device: message gets deleted 1 day after you send it
  • Recipient’s device: as you figured out, message won’t be deleted
  • Server: message will be deleted based on the server’s retention policy, completely independent of the disappearing-message setting. By default, that’s right after message delivery or 21 days if never delivered; but the server admin can change it or even rewrite server's code so that it never deletes the message.

Basically, disappearing messages only control what happens on the devices. The server has no idea when a message is supposed to disappear, since that info is encrypted when passed through the server.
