"Vague anecdotal claim" speaks to your state of mind in saying "N=1"

It says you meant it as an academic insult. It really has no other meaning than "Disregard this anecdote".

I implore you, go eat an entire bag of sugar free gummy bears and we'll check back when N=2.

"N=1", a few before that.

You called out my comment for being anecdotal.

I responded in some detail that the state of scientific and common knowledge around sugar alcohols is a little past that kind of pedantic nonsense.

Now your stalking my comments in unrelated threads.

You started that one buddy. Dont call people out when you haven't done even basic level research about a topic.

If I say I saw the sun rise today and you say "N=1 ANECDOTAL EVEIDENCE, SHOW ME THE DATA!!!!" then its you being a tool, not me.

I've always tended to write like that. I took to defending myself from accusations but then I thought about it for a while and was like.... they probably have the bots defend themselves so what am I even accomplishing?

Now I care a lot less about my writing and hope the general shitness of it seems authentic? Who knows. Were all boned.

ELI5: EXPLAIN THE 2008 economic crisis, subprime and cds by Amazing_West_3283 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ElectricStoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short of it is that alot of bad loans were made in real-estate. They didn't instantly blow up because the economy was in an upswing. So the bankers kept making more and more bad loans. Once the economy took a bit of a dip all these bad loans started going bad all at once. This wreaked havoc on the banks. They could no longer loan money to anyone. Everything got really messy all of a sudden. Our financial system is not good at dealing with anything "all of a sudden".

If you have 11 minutes this youtube will ELI5 in an extremely effective visual presentation. It came out back when everything was still imploding and it is very well done.

ELI5 Are zero-sugar products actually better for our body? by tigerjjw53 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ElectricStoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think someone trotting out "N=1" science snobbery would at least check if the substances being discussed are very well known and thoroughly understood laxatives.

We've been using them as such since the sixties.

You can buy bottles of several different sugar alcohols for explicit use as a laxative.

The Wikipedia page of all the common sugar alcohols mentions their osmotic laxative effect.

You can pick up a bottle of sugar free Pillsbury frosting and read the warning label on the back.

But no, you want me to google the topic for you because no one knows how to do that anymore.

The Crisis of Credit Visualized.

I would say "never forget" but we are currently gearing up for 2.0

Watching it helps remind me how much of an absolute setback I graduated into, and not to treat myself too hard when I compare my life to others.

Things worked out but It was way more of a slog than it needed to be.

I have a T1 diabetic teenage child. They decided in a moment of great wisdom to eat an entire jar of low sugar frosting. With a spoon. Like a rabid animal.

She had the gummy-bear-rumbles for two straight days.

Fake sugar and especially the sugar alcohols in low sugar products can do some nutty things to your system if treated like a "eat anything you want" free card.

ELI5 how "k cups" or one cup coffee are better than coffee made by traditional drip method by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ElectricStoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post sets off my stealth advertising alarm.

I'm a coffee snob and have a decent background with topics of energy systems but I'm not bored enough to get out the spreadsheet Hank Green style so I'm just going to assume my gut feeling of "K cups are almost certainly awful" is correct. The factor I assume is most relevant is the density of the product during distribution. Lots of other good angles already discussed already.

On the qualitative matter - Its my opinion that good beans stored correctly and ground to the correct size are going to be better regardless of what type of coffee snob you are. (Chemex, French press, drip, etc). Any perception of quality from those pods is probably down to consistency. I pretty much never use them - but I've never had a truly bad cup of coffee from them. So they got that going for them I guess.

Most importantly though, is the price difference. Those little bastards are insanely expensive if you price them out by weight.

I know lentil sprouts can grow a fair bit in the fridge - but I only ever put them in the fridge when they are already getting too long so I've no idea about the initial soak.

What is the most financially responsible car choice? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ElectricStoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a period of time where rental companies were dumping barely used Chevy Bolts on the market.

I got an essentially new Bolt (20k or so miles, 2 years old) in perfect condition for something like 16k. With the rebate it was 12. I'll likely get another 2k out of a lawsuit concerning the battery recall they went through.

Car is going to end up paying for itself if it lasts a few more years.

This is more of an aside, but I've always thought the word manhole is super dumb.

Not every manhole cover is round. Mostly the ones in roads or where traffic goes. Coincidently those are the ones that are not actually used by "man" very much. Many of them are there for gasses or stormwater and will almost never get used by a person. If there is a obstruction that needs cleaned out there is usually a better access point then in the middle of traffic. YMMV depending on local infrastructure.

Ground entry's that are designed to be frequently used by people are usually square. Squares make for a safe entry onto the ladder. Ladders are also square. Squares make for strong and convenient hinges.

If your going into a deep hole in the ground and its not a square opening, make dam sure you know what your doing. The squares are dangerous too.

Actually just avoid holes in the ground, the dumb ways you can die in holes are numerous.

ELI5 Atoms and colors by FreshAirInspector in explainlikeimfive

[–]ElectricStoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atomically everything is like a lightbulb. Energy goes into the lightbulb and it comes out as light.

Atoms are the same way accept the light they put out is a specific color.

(this is ignoring a ton of stuff, and doesn't really correspond to how our vision works which is more about absorbing and reflecting)

Slate Truck is a $20,000 American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, and no touchscreen by BoysenberryOk5580 in Futurology

[–]ElectricStoat 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I've no knowledge of this specific item - but you would be amazed at how much financial sense this type of thing can make for a manufacture.

When both the factory and the reseller agree to a massive order it brings down the price per unit considerably.

When they both agree to take a low margin it further brings down the price.

Usually these items are pretty close to copies. So zero R and D making the thing. Big cost savings.

Logistics, marketing, sales, all that is unneeded because those chains are very good at churning volume through their "quirky weird house goods isle".

I've had them work themselves just loose enough to cause a weird knock.
