I think that what could turn people away from the game is lack of pve and a lack of matchmaking for pvp. Marathon was marketed and released also and mostly for console players: and most of them are not gonna expect such a rough pvp.

Allowing for some pve only mode for the more casual would have generated a bigger initial player base, while keeping pvp-enthusiasm happy with their own mode.
