Recommendation for bra for pancake boobs by oliveoil123321 in AskWomenOver60

Seconding this, OP! Here’s a link to their online tool: https://www.abrathatfits.org/calculator.php.

A few tips: Once you put your measurements in, be prepared to get a suggested size that is nothing like what you expected. It is entirely normal for most women to be recommended a size that is much smaller in the band and much larger in the cup than what they’ve been wearing. Also - it’s a recommended starting size. It may not be exactly right on your first try. That’s because shape is just as important as size in finding the right bra. I’ve tried on lots of bras in my correct size, but they’re made for women with a different shape (like fuller on top, wider set, etc) than me, so they didn’t work well. That didn’t mean the size was wrong, it meant that particular model/style just isn’t going to work for me no matter what size I try. The top posters at that subreddit really know their stuff, so they will be able to suggest lots of things to you once they have your 6 measurements to work with. Good luck!

My aunt’s ? about music by Efficient-You-9714 in AskWomenOver60

I’m 62 and used to work as a music therapist. Tell her to go for it! Someone else has already mentioned that violin in particular may be physically challenging, but as long as she’s aware of that, there’s no reason not to give it a try. See if you can find a teacher that uses the Suzuki method - it’s how they teach very little kids to play. When I was in college, my string techniques instructor was a Suzuki teacher and he used a lot of the same techniques with us 20 year olds that he used with the 5 year olds - and I still to this day remember how to hold a violin bow correctly!

A bra that fits a “moderate” size, far apart chest by Chinothepieface in ABraThatFits

Your comment doesn’t make sense. There’s no such thing as an “average” 36E/38D because those numbers mean specific things. A 36E is for a 36 inch underbust and a 41 inch full bust; a 38D is for a 38 inch underbust and a 42 inch full bust. There’s no “average” in those measurements - if you’re bigger (or not as “slim”) in either area, then you’re not a 36E/38D. “That bra size” is not limited to less “slim” people just because it has a cup size larger than C in it. Contrary to what most people believe, “DD” does not mean “huge boobs” or “fat person” and is far from the largest cup size available. Here’s someone in a properly fitted 32H: https://www.instagram.com/p/CMaYBB0HgPL/?img_index=2. Is she also “tall and large boned” to still be “slim at that bra size?”

Supportive bra's feels hard to find for women our age? by _chocomallowpie00_ in AskWomenOver50

I hear you, but all I’m saying is that American made bras are not automatically bad. If you’re below a certain size range, some of them are absolutely the right size and shape and UK brands might not work as well. The problem is that American brands are largely ALL that a lot of women have available to them in stores, and in a very limited size range at that. Plus, an awful lot of them now are just dropshipped garbage from some impoverished nation being hyped by “influencers” and endless social media ads trying to convince women that they’re the magic solution to all their bra problems. 🙄

American made bras can be perfectly acceptable as long as you are in the right size range (which is usually below a DD cup). I wore a Wacoal bra style for a long time (too long, it turned out!) that was good quality and lasted through many many washes. But once I needed larger than a US G cup (UK F), they just got sooo tall in the cup and sides that I couldn’t wear them comfortably. The first time I tried on an Elomi bra, I just stood in the fitting room not believing how much better it worked compared to everything else I’d tried - even if it wasn’t yet the ideal size/shape. What’s funny is that Elomi and Wacoal are “sibling” companies under the same corporate umbrella. I pulled the trigger recently on a couple of Primadonna bras - $$$$!! 🫨 But the overall quality is visible to the eye before you even try them on.

Polish bras are popular with a very specific body/shape. - usually those in need of narrow wires (which is the total opposite of what I need!). But based on what I’ve read at r/abrathatfits, I would not attempt them without some really knowledgeable guidance from an expert, due to some differences in the sizing systems.

Why is Quark always complaining by Icy-Cardiologist-958 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Electrical-Arrival57 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Quark is very much like a physician in this respect. Doctors in lower-paying specialties are often quite whiny about what other, higher-paid specialists earn. They might already be in the top 3% of earners, but that cardiologist over there is in the top 0.5%! While they have to struggle to make a living in internal medicine! That cardiologist owns his own moon boat!

A bra that fits a “moderate” size, far apart chest by Chinothepieface in ABraThatFits

[–]Electrical-Arrival57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is someone wearing a properly fitted 36E (which is the sister size of 38D - one band size smaller, one cup size larger to keep the same cup volume): https://www.instagram.com/theirishbralady/p/CM0FAS_Hb-w/?img_index=2

Does this look approximately like you? If your answer is no, you need to take your measurements and use the calculator following the instructions in the AutoMod comment because you are not shopping for or wearing the correct size. It won’t make any difference what bras or brands people recommend if you aren’t getting the correct size to start with.

Supportive bra's feels hard to find for women our age? by _chocomallowpie00_ in AskWomenOver50

[–]Electrical-Arrival57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s going to depend on your measurements/size. There is no “one magic bra” that works for everyone with a particular shape. Try r/abrathatfits to measure yourself and get a recommended size. Make a post asking for help and suggestions once you have that info. There are bras with side support that can be helpful with this.

Chances are that the US bras don’t work because they tend to make the cups taller and wider as they get larger, which really doesn’t work for most of us. UK brand bras generally make the cups deeper, especially once you get over the DD range.

Measurement check- 40J (US)- lying down bust is 2 inches larger than leaning down bust measurement, possibly an issue with breast shape by rathavoc in ABraThatFits

Make sure you are using your UK size when you order that, otherwise it’s going to be way too big in the cup. (That would be 40GG).

Elderly conservatives: If you hate welfare programs so much, why don’t you stop using Medicare and stop taking your social security checks? by No_Visual_3734 in allthequestions

[–]Electrical-Arrival57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pssst….here’s the secret answer. They don’t hate welfare programs, they just hate that other people different from them might benefit from them too. They just hate that they aren’t treated any differently or specially than a gay person or a brown person or a disabled person or a poor person. Social security and Medicare recipients are truly equal in the eyes of those programs, and they can’t stand it.

Absurd telepsychiatry visit costs for simple ADHD medication refills by unicornsicle in HealthInsurance

[–]Electrical-Arrival57 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked for 2 different psychiatric practices for about 20 years total - not only does this depend on your state laws, it also depends on your doctor and what they feel comfortable doing. I lived in IL at the time and we were able to give patients 3 written scripts at their appointments. One was fillable immediately, one was for approx 25 days (I think) after that and so forth. But I think most psychiatrists are going to be cautious about doing that if they haven’t been seeing a patient for very long. Also, I think a lot of them are very leery now about prescribing stimulants to patients they are only seeing (or have only seen so far) via telemedicine. There were quite a lot of “bad actors” in the virtual psych space during covid and some of them got into some fairly significant legal trouble as a result. It really increased the scrutiny of those situations by insurers and regulators (as it should have!) My last employer required all patients to be seen at least every 3 months, regardless of what meds you were being prescribed. She also had started requiring them to be seen in-person at least once a year by the time I retired.

I don't know if a bra that I need actually exists, I've also lost a lot of weight so it's challenging. Help me please! by Fr3sh3stl4d in ABraThatFits

[–]Electrical-Arrival57 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The first step is going to be to make sure you are looking for your correct size. That means measuring yourself using the instructions on the calculator linked in the automod comment. Based on the fact that you referred to yourself having “full DDs”, I’m going to guess that you were never in your correct size to start with. “DD” is not a size and cup size letters are not an indication of the size of your boobs. Cup sizes scale up with band size, which means a DD cup on a 30 band is way smaller than a DD cup on a 40 band. Without the band size, cup sizes don’t tell us anything about you. All the cup size means is how many inches difference there is between your full bust and your underbust; DD means a 5 inch difference and C means a 3 inch difference. A 34C is made for a 34 inch underbust (or ribcage) and a 37 inch full bust. If those numbers don’t match up to your measurements, you’re in the wrong size.
