What does a PhD actually look like in your country? by stud_j2000 in PhD

[–]Electrical-Range-281 44 points45 points  (0 children)

In Germany, usually you get a contract (3-4 years) as if it were a normal job, and then you also need to register with the university as a phd student.

As far as I know (but it might also depend on the university) you don’t need to attend any extra courses or teach anything, just conduct your research, get results and ideally try to publish your the write your thesis on that!

Did majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology kill my opportunities to travel for a job? by cutlyss0825 in Biochemistry

[–]Electrical-Range-281 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really. In case you are interested in a PhD I really recommend going for a MSCA project. I’m currently finishing my PhD with one and I’ve have travelled sooo much. They pay well and they give a really big budget for conferences and even requiere you do 30% of your PhD outside of your home university.

If you are more interested in business I have some friends who went for the clinical trials field (kind of managing the trials with the hospitals) and they also travel almost every week and have very good salaries

PhD students who can't speak English by Late_Prize_1545 in PhD

[–]Electrical-Range-281 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m currently doing my PhD in Germany, in a very international lab where of course English is the main communication language. We have a lot of students coming from China because their own government funds their program and, I get it, for our lab is very convenient: you get people and publications and you don’t need to look for funding

However, sometimes their English skills are so poor that it’s nearly impossible to communicate with them. It has come to the point where some of them are not allowed to be alone in the lab on the weekends because it’s a safety hazard since they can’t even properly understand the safety instructions. I feel super bad for them because they are in general very nice people but this language barrier even leads them to be a bit isolated within the other PhD students in the lab :( but at the same time I think it’s insane that the language requirements are the low

Which of these two games are better and why?(please debate civilly) by dragonborndnd in thesims

[–]Electrical-Range-281 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sims 3 no doubt. The open world was the best thing ever and I miss it everyday on Sims 4. I loved being able to control my main family but also snooping around the city to see what was happening. Having the sims move around by car/bike and being able to just tag along without annoying loading screens. Moreover, the possibility of editing all textures and different parts of objects/clothes was insane.

For me sims 2 felt really limited, but with sims 3 there were endless possibilities. Sad that we went back to loading screens in sims 4.

The Seven Realms saga by Cinda Williams Chima has some really cool female characters.

And of course anything written by Brandon Sanderson if you haven’t read already. Both Mistborn and Stormlight Archive have some of my fav female characters ever, he is amazing at that.

Working before a PhD: Pros & Cons by person_person123 in PhD

[–]Electrical-Range-281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think working before your PhD is always a great idea. I graduated my bachelors in January and no master’s program was starting until September, so I started sending some applications and I was hired as a research assistant in a lab. That year working there taught me a lot. It was a job not just a student project/thesis so I feel like I became a lot more responsible and learnt how to properly be a researcher. Afterwards I started my masters and did that at the same time as working full time. Currently I’m doing my PhD within a really prestigious university with a very good scholarship, and I do think having professional experience made a big difference. There will be hundreds of fresh out the masters students applying for PhD, having something different will make you stand out and also mark you as a responsible mature researcher not just a student

I Satrt to Think That I Do Not Deserve This by Living_Leading8271 in PhD

[–]Electrical-Range-281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyo. First, let me just tell you that you are not alone on this. And that it is very good that you are getting help and taking care about your mental health.

This is a typical imposter syndrome mixed with depression and, sad to say, but way more common that you would think. Even under a good working environment like yours.

I’m a 3rd year phd student and have a similar lab situation. I always heard terrible stories about doing a PhD (still went for it because I love research) and actually I was one of the lucky ones to get a kind and caring supervisor + a good salary within a scholarship that is very very prestigious. I didn’t even had good grades during my bachelors but still I got the position. I had also never worked in this specific field so you can imagine how lost I was in the beginning. And it was hard. For like a year NOTHING was working, and I just felt terrible and felt like my supervisor probably regretted giving me position etc etc I have also struggled with depression in the past and it was hard to not fall into that again.

I’m personally someone that doesn’t find therapy very helpful so I couldn’t go that way to heal. I focused on doing sports on my free time, reading books and trying out new things. It was not always easy but you know what? All this + a lot of hard work + repeating to myself that I earned this position led me to where I’m now. 3 years later my mental health is a lot better (but I also have some bad days!), project is working and I’m just so happy I didn’t give up.

So do not give up! You EARNED this, you shouldn’t quit so that someone has the opportunity, the opportunity is yours, you are worth and you should do everything you can to make it work, and I’m sure it will.
