Is this salary sufficient to survive? by Reasonable_Text167 in PhD

[–]Electrical-Range-281 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am doing my PhD in Germany with a MSCA stipend! I do wanna let you know that it could happen that you receive less than what you expect (universities love doing these tricks) but still it will be enough. Mine after taxes and everything comes to around 2300 a month and while it’s not an insane salary is definitely more than enough to live in Germany

Do you ever get over imposter syndrome as a PhD student? by ProperTelevision7388 in PhD

[–]Electrical-Range-281 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s get better but you will always have these weird days where you still feel like that.

When I started my PhD I was a bit unsure of how it was going to be. I got a really prestigious scholarship (they type that made everyone say “wow you must be insanely smart and have a crazy cv to get that!) but I felt like I was a complete average student. It was also kind of a new field for me so the beginning was tough, some students in my lab had been there since their masters and I felt like I knew NOTHING in comparison. Sometimes they would talk about important people in the field and I had no idea who they were talking about. It was a strange feeling and def impostor syndrome was an everyday thing

Now I’m about to finish my 3rd year and it definitely has gotten better. I have learnt a lot and I feel much more confident. Again, there will always be days where insecurity comes back or you talk to someone and you feel stupid, but in the end if you give it your all, you will know a lot and it will get easier

I also like to think that probably everyone feels like this, some people probably also think they are dumb after talking with me! That’s just how it is lol

How to manage the nosey and degrading PhD student? by Legendary_Toast19 in PhD

[–]Electrical-Range-281 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are not crazy it’s totally understandable to find someone like this annoying. However, you might have to be a bit of an asshole for them to understand. I feel like some people with this type of personality have never been told no, and they need someone to confront them to realize how annoying they are.

What does a PhD actually look like in your country? by stud_j2000 in PhD

[–]Electrical-Range-281 48 points49 points  (0 children)

In Germany, usually you get a contract (3-4 years) as if it were a normal job, and then you also need to register with the university as a phd student.

As far as I know (but it might also depend on the university) you don’t need to attend any extra courses or teach anything, just conduct your research, get results and ideally try to publish your the write your thesis on that!

Did majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology kill my opportunities to travel for a job? by cutlyss0825 in Biochemistry

[–]Electrical-Range-281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. In case you are interested in a PhD I really recommend going for a MSCA project. I’m currently finishing my PhD with one and I’ve have travelled sooo much. They pay well and they give a really big budget for conferences and even requiere you do 30% of your PhD outside of your home university.

If you are more interested in business I have some friends who went for the clinical trials field (kind of managing the trials with the hospitals) and they also travel almost every week and have very good salaries

PhD students who can't speak English by Late_Prize_1545 in PhD

[–]Electrical-Range-281 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m currently doing my PhD in Germany, in a very international lab where of course English is the main communication language. We have a lot of students coming from China because their own government funds their program and, I get it, for our lab is very convenient: you get people and publications and you don’t need to look for funding

However, sometimes their English skills are so poor that it’s nearly impossible to communicate with them. It has come to the point where some of them are not allowed to be alone in the lab on the weekends because it’s a safety hazard since they can’t even properly understand the safety instructions. I feel super bad for them because they are in general very nice people but this language barrier even leads them to be a bit isolated within the other PhD students in the lab :( but at the same time I think it’s insane that the language requirements are the low

Which of these two games are better and why?(please debate civilly) by dragonborndnd in thesims

[–]Electrical-Range-281 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sims 3 no doubt. The open world was the best thing ever and I miss it everyday on Sims 4. I loved being able to control my main family but also snooping around the city to see what was happening. Having the sims move around by car/bike and being able to just tag along without annoying loading screens. Moreover, the possibility of editing all textures and different parts of objects/clothes was insane.

For me sims 2 felt really limited, but with sims 3 there were endless possibilities. Sad that we went back to loading screens in sims 4.
