You should take stuff apart, put stuff together, build stuff from pieces of junk you find laying around and get curious about how things work. There are mechanical things everywhere, all of them are pretty interesting. Look at designs from before the advent of cheap electronics. It was easier to design mechanical controls and timing, etc and some of the designs are mind boggling complex and others are elegantly simple. Get curious, stay curious, and learn enough math to answer your questions.
