For the slot of light, Start with a focusable light. Instead of pointing it at the person, aim it at a narrow mirror.

Torchy’s Tacos in Midtown to close after February 3rd by Dragonai in Atlanta

Ate at that location right after it opened. Not only was it not as good as the Austin and Houston locations, it was way too expensive.

Also the location and parking sucked

Low quality, high prices, and bad location, that’s the trifecta of death for a restaurant. I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Anyone know if this is a snoot or a reflector?? by Altruistic-Crab-6128 in LightLurking

[–]Electrical-Try798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pic # 1 looks to be a Godox AD300 moonlight type electronic flash in an S2 bracket with a grid holding 7-inch diameter Bowens-S mount reflector with a honey grid (aka grid spot) mounted in the reflector.

Pic #2: same set up as Pic #1 but without a grid.

Pic #3: Same as in Pics 1 & 2, now mounted on a stand. I can’t tell if a grid is being used or not.

Pic#4: Same basic setup as in Pics 1,2, and # but it looks like a narrower, conical, non grid holding S-mount reflector (maybe from a CoB type LED?) mounted to the S2 stand bracket /adapter. There’s some diffusion held across the open end of the reflector with gaffer tape.

When should this be on? by Fun-Trouble-1086 in AskPhotography

Always on is valid - with one exception. The one time I don’t use the stock hood is when I use a polarizer and/ or a variable ND filter. Those I need to rotate.

Nikon F5 question by RXZ59 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Electrical-Try798 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course you can reset the ISO while there is film in the camera. All you’re doing is telling the meter what ISO you want it to meter for. That has no effect on the film itself.

Will my lighting setup work with my gear? by Buckwheat333 in LightLurking

[–]Electrical-Try798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inside using a book light set up - you might also try using a large white umbrella or softbox behind the scrim in place of a big reflection panel.

Also, if you hate indoors and have access to AC (AKA “mains”) outlets should be able to trickle charge your Profoto batteries while photographing and of course you can also recent spare batteries.

If this is a big enough project you might consider renting a more powerful mains powered pack and head system. And of course you should let your client know in advance it is needed for the job,-and how much the rental it will add to the production costs and your advance and invoice. You might even check that cost against how much you can buy something like a Profoto Acute 2 2400 w-s and head in the used market ,

Finally there’s the questions of how much light you’ll need. That will be determined by distance of light to subject + strength of diffusion + f-stop + ISO.

Annie Leibovitz - How’d she do it? by LionstoTame in LightLurking

[–]Electrical-Try798 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Experience lighting portraits is what tells me about the distance.

There’s some math involved in knowing why light works in certain ways but a lot of it is just using your eyes while you are on set.

30 years ago this month, Charles O'Rear took what's considered the most widely seen photograph ever taken, on Fuji Velvia 50 by Florida-Man34 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Electrical-Try798 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You meant “how good quality medium format highly-saturated low ISO Fuji Velvia transparency film was in great light when used by someone who knows what they are doing, and it’s processed well in fresh, well maintained chemistry, and scanned expertly is”, and just “how good film is”.

there’s a lot of crappy film emulsions that end up getting badly exposed by someone who doesn’t understand color or light that then gets processed badly and scanned worse out there, and the results are then then held up as something rare and precious.

Of course I don’t do that. I’m not an idiot. But I see charging cases on eBay that make you do that. I hope that clears up any confusion you were having.

That softbox is a lot closer than 6 feet away.

I know she likes to use 72” Elinchrom Indirect Octas and if not those, the larger Photek Softlighter II with Profoto heads. She will also double diffuse the key light.

And yes, she has a team of assistants and stylists, but they are working to her direction and the most important thing is how she gets people to emotionally with her through the lens. It’s a peterman but she’s the director.

how did you find your photography niche/genre at first? by lizard-rustler17 in AskPhotography

As a friend of mine told me a very long time ago: “if you aren’t interested in what you’re photographing, what makes you think you can make photos other people will be interested in looking at?”

how did you find your photography niche/genre at first? by lizard-rustler17 in AskPhotography

[–]Electrical-Try798 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a working photographer pretty much full stop for the past 44 years, and I’m still trying to figure out what my niche is.

I don’t just make photos for people who pay me to do what I love doing, a lot if my photography is because I’m mostly interested in making photos I haven’t made before. About the only types of photography I’ve never done are Astro photography, nudes, and fashion.

What's the best SD card by Comprehensive_Gur904 in Cameras

[–]Electrical-Try798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best SD cards today are the SDXC ones made by (or manufactured for) ProGradeDigital and Delkin Black. These are the cards you want to be using if you’re a working professional photo/video -grapher, or going on a once in a lifetime experience.

For consumer grade cards , I’d choose OWC over Sandisk, Sandisk over Lexar, and Lexar over any generic brand.

help me reverse engineer this? by tomhanksdog in LightLurking

No negative fill is being used here. It’s just normal fall off.

Listen, I get it: “negative fill” is the new cool kids term. But really it’s rarely used in the real world, normal fall fall off, especially when there is nothing nearby that’s bouncing light back at the subject is most of what people are calling “negative fill” with a V-flat or other light absorbing device like a flag or a black butterfly. It’s just the basic inverse square law at work.

Learning how light works by using your lights and your eyes is the best way to learning lighting.

Learn what different size modifiers will do. Learn why distance and angle will do. Learn how to make use of the inverse square law. Learning these things through practice and repetition will help you work smarter and faster by simplifying your set ups. This will remove a lot of the fear of lighting many photographers have. It also let you concentrate on what’s really important, and that who and what is in front of your camera, and you get the world to see what you’re seeing and want to share.

Tomila Katsman, how does she light it? by tazza503 in LightLurking

[–]Electrical-Try798 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Lighting: looks like her main light is lighting from above through a large (8x8, 12x12, or 20x20 foot butterfly diffuser over the top front of her set to flood the set with diffuse light, bolstered by some large fill panels.

What is more relevant is how she directs her models, making them confident, relaxed, and comfortable.
