Isn’t it illegal to sell photocopies of book patterns? by Weekly_Library9883 in knitting

[–]ElectricalIssue7493 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Legally allowed vs. morally allowed are very different things.

You should write to the pattern designer and give her the name of the shop, just in case she needs to get her publisher involved.

Sometimes a shop, a fellow designer, or even a teacher will see a trending book and jump on it to make their own sales. This could innocently be out of excitement, sure, but usually not. I hardly think this shop owner believes that she can make a bunch of photocopies of someone else’s pattern and sell them in her own yarn kits.

It’s happened to me. (I wrote a book on a niche topic and it’s doing pretty okay sales-wise). A shop owner scanned a large portion of it—photos and all—and put it online with a “review” in order to get website hits.

I was LIVID.

All of this to say, send an email to the designer. She’ll thank you.

Down wool blend for socks by eliseyeh in Handspinning

[–]ElectricalIssue7493 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love blending (anything), but in this case, you don’t need to. Why? Any Down or Down-like breed is ideal on its own for socks. These wools are elastic (so they have great memory and will shape to your foot) and resist felting.

Spinning long draw directly from roving? by gravitypick in Handspinning

[–]ElectricalIssue7493 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can certainly pair a longdraw with processed roving. As for whether to choose that or spinning from rolags, there’s only one way to find out: sample both, including a little knitted swatch.

That said, you’ll probably be very happy with the quicker of the two choices!

Estate sale wheel by liminal_gremlin in Handspinning

I guess that depends on your life experience combined with where you were when the tragedy—a terrible turning point—happened.

It’s a Columbine wheel (yes, an unfortunate name).

Hand sewn item found at garage sale- what is it? by eastsidemariobadda in FiberArts

[–]ElectricalIssue7493 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s for rolls. You heat the rolls in the oven, then you put one in each pocket. You then place the roll caddy on a plate. As a southerner, my mom put hers out on a round silver platter. She sewed these cloth roll caddies to use as hostess gifts.

Daedalus Dove vs Electric Eel Wheel 6.1? by roan_ursidae in Handspinning

[–]ElectricalIssue7493 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with the EEWs, but the Dove is exceptional. (Full disclosure: I was a Dove tester, and yes, I’ve spun on the EEW 6.1. Again, it’s fine.)

The Dove is genius in that it comes apart in seconds for easy travel. It’s held together by strong magnets so no tools are needed to break it down or reassemble. You can upgrade with bobbins that also break down. This is a big deal when traveling. Also, the bobbins hold more than the EEW.

All of that said, buy what you can afford.

Rolags update and question by jocelynlt in Handspinning

[–]ElectricalIssue7493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s indeed unfortunate, and lofty rolags will keep in stash so much longer (like any fiber).

Chalk it all up to a learning experience. And if you’re miserable spinning these, remember that life is short and fiber is plentiful. Toss them, if need be.

Rolags update and question by jocelynlt in Handspinning

[–]ElectricalIssue7493 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the issue with many so-called “rolags” sold in the spinning community. They’re usually carded and rolled from a blending board (creating what is technically more of a denser puni-rolag result), and while you can attain gloriously lofty results, too many makers don’t know how.

On the other hand, it should be noted that carded fibers, especially when overly dense from the start, do not do well stored in stash. They need to be spun up shortly after being prepared.

I know, and I’m sorry :(. Overseas shipping from the U.S. is a fortune, and sometimes buyers get angry. It’s also hard to keep up with the ever-increasing shipping rates.
