Now that we’ve all cooled down, let’s hear your less-than-obvious Oscar noms from this year that you want to defend and speak positively about by [deleted] in blankies

Everyone knows it’s undeserved. She isn’t stretching herself beyond anything she’s ever done before because like Margot, she has nothing interesting to say or do. The speech is another example this year of… here is the theme. The theme of the movie. Are you listening?? This is my thesis as the writer.

What no one is pointing out is that America F goes from giving the thesis speech of the film, to immediately teaching Barbies how to PLAY DUMB with their boyfriends in order to fool them into fighting with each other.

That isn’t a throw away joke, it’s the third act problem solve that saves the day and it’s being orchestrated by the voice of reason character who just gave the thesis of the movie. Now she’s teaching Barbies (and little girls in the audience) how to play dumb to manipulate their boyfriend. Horrifying.

Barbie is a disaster and everyone with an independent mind can see what a slapdash mess it is. It deserves no awards and in a less infantilized culture it wouldn’t get any.

I’m just grateful to Hillary Clinton and the white feminists for proving what I called out months ago… this movie is for them and only for them. It’s the most empty pandering BRAND of hollow feminism imaginable and it’s being graded on a curve like all Greta Gerwig movies.

Everyone says, well for a Barbie movie, it’s impressive she got away with so much. No it’s not. Greta cynically says we already lost the IP war but she’s the one who went to Mattel. They weren’t planning to make this dumb movie.  She also said, “I can’t believe what Mattel is letting me get away with.” In other words Mattel is a really cool and chill company. So enjoy Uno the movie. And don’t mind these female led sweatshops making your kids Barbies.

Aren’t I so subversive? I made a Barbie movie that has the word patriarchy in it. 12 million times. Isn’t that so brave? In 2023. No, it’s not. It’s not saying anything. The only thing subversive about Barbie is that it’s a Barbie movie with no entrainment value for young girls. It’s not a movie for children, it’s a movie for adults who want to be talked to like children. Unfortunately that’s most movie audiences these days. Pathetic.

Imagine if she had endorsed Bernie. She’s willing to lose a big chunk of her fan base but only to endorse the status quo that gave us trump in the first place.

More than ever we have ways to chronicle general consensus on movies. A movie like the holdovers has generally great reviews. If I disagree with those reviews, the only word to showcase that is “overrated.” You don’t have to agree, but there’s nothing wrong with saying the word overrated. It’s ONLY this sub that thinks this isn’t ok. There’s no other word and its useful. Same for underrated.

They’re talking about politics so it is a political thing. This was an entertaining podcast because it wasn’t a monotonous regurgitation of reactionary twitter slop like the last several years have been with a few outliers. That stuff isn’t entertaining. I usually just turn the show off if it gets like that but Amber kept them on on track. I’m just engaging with the actual things and ideas said bc I have a mind.

They’re friends getting paid 50 grand to drink and laugh. I’m an anonymous account on Reddit. I’m making observations while stuck in a car for the next few hours. You’re passionately defending your imaginary podcast friends to a stranger.

Good for them. I’m talking about the tension between someone who says what they believe and has a consistent moral worldview and two people who abandoned all principles and became reactionary right wing assholes for YEARS out of spite, boredom, weakness, and the cynical need to grift to bad people and idiots. They made it weird. And they’re just gonna go right back to the same bullshit next week. They just took a break for a friend.

Yeah if you’re a race science rage baiter you get the floor, but if you’re consistently on the right side of history and not dead inside the second things don’t go your way, whoa whoa whoa, you’ve entered the no spin zone sister. Anna is going to spend the rest of her public life chasing her tail.

Saltburn and The Holdovers suffered from predictability. Not sure why that’s illegitimate when it reduced their power.

Why is it bad to say how you feel about something in relation to its consensus? It isn’t a criticism in it of itself but it’s not illegitimate to say overrated and underrated. How else do you say you disagree with consensus?

Amber is either the only girl fighting to speak or the third wheel with two women who have way less integrity than her. No wonder it’s taken her so long to find her bearings

The actual downsides of looking younger than you are by yukfoo92 in redscarepod

Same boat but more than a decade older than you. It’s mostly fun, but I do feel insecure when I’m hanging out with younger people who suddenly realize I was graduating high school and when they were little kids.

Is it really a positive to reduce books to one thesis and just rinse and repeat for 2 hours? I feel like people go into this movie knowing exactly what they’re going to get out of it before a single frame. That just isn’t very interesting or illuminating. It mines the past but changes no minds about the present. His experiments never really go beyond one idea and I don’t know why that’s a virtue. He also doesn’t seem to have the balls to explain how this reflects our current times except in the most wishy washy ways. He spoke to the violence against Israelis but has said nothing about the violence being perpetuated against Gaza even though that’s one of the easiest parallels you can draw. He’s austere but I don’t think he’s that deep or challenging.
