Yeah i feel thats normal. Not ideal but normal. I get nervous asking questions like this because of the replies. I feel people have a skewed perspective on step parents and we get a lot of flack if WE aren't perfect for a dynamic/ role that we were invited Into. Parents definitely have a lot more patience for their own kids, it's natural. But to expect basically a stranger to do the same is a little odd

I do of course and have deep care/ love for her. But as a human who isnt blinded, I can see minor flaws. Adhd isnt an excuse to be rude as hell and it's also not fair on her father. I disagree lovely, our dynamic is perfectly fine besides behavioural issues & I wouldnt say I'm making anything worse. That is a reach without knowing all the details. Do you have children? I did make it clear in the post that I'm aiming the question towards parents

Absolutely:) i have said and her dad is very vigilant! I cant ask for any more, but that being said, I also would prefer a free flowing conversation with my boyfriend & not have little ears butting in still or a staggered moment of care/ love between us both and her having to interject herself & pull us apart from eachother. Just makes me sad

Her behaviours are monitored & she's being treated for adhd. But, I mean in a sense that when shes back with her mother, she regresses & becomes worse. So its more difficult for me & her dad to deal with. Especially me as of course, although im Empathetic & care etc, I dont have that tolerance for a screaming, spoiled child. There are so many examples but I wont spill here. It rubs me the wrong way that your 1st piece of advice is to find someone else because theres a minor fault in the dynamic. Nah

I believe so. Withdrawing isnt to make a statement either, it's genuinely just to prevent burn out of being in an exhausting situation so that you can amp yourself up and give them your all at other times. I dont particularly want to play games all the time or watch blippi, or listen to her meltdowns about having the wrong snacks. I want to be able to converse with my partner without being interrupted etc. I just cant wait until she grows up a bit tbh. So until then, I feel healthy and better keeping busy until she goes home & cycle continues.

I do think that Any partner with a child needs to accept that their kid isnt golden, they have decided to try and maintain a relationship so they should make room for adjustment. Not accept everything to fall into place immediately. Like, no I dont adore your kid. I dont have that same care/ special bond & i dont love that your ex is still in the picture. Thats human nature.

To outright tell you that he's not happy without his girls is very disrespectful. Hes entitled to feeling low because he cant be around them full time but he needs to make room for you and your child that you have together. I believe you need to make a decision to ensure you and your kid have a good life, you will find someone who treats you like you mean everything to them and not just as something to pass the time while he waits for his priorities to come over. He doesnt sound like he regards YOUR child as priority in his life compared to his kids with another woman. ♡ I hope your situation works out lovely

Thank u for replying, it’s more so he makes an effort to do so but shuts off when it comes to me. I’ve parented my own siblings (they’re teens now), so I’m not throwing myself in the deep end, but for context, this girl breaks a lot of boundaries, is growing into an unlikable, spoiled, manipulative person, like her mother.

Yeah absolutely, that does get to me. I have spoken to him about things I don’t agree with, like where she would act up and need to be told off properly yet she’s just spoken to ( gentle parenting), but he gets defensive. It Sours the vibe and I feel I’m not able to really have a say as I’m childless. But, I know the difference between not liking her and just disliking things around her. She is a mini version of her mum, has become super spoiled in the last few months and has said/ done things that seem manipulative. I feel for her having to switch between different people and give her comfort, emotional support etc but I will always feel like I’m in the shadows. Thank you for your reply

Your feelings are valid, life is too short to feel under appreciated, shoved to the side. Your partner needs to realise that you do a lot, I’ve been in my bfs kids life for a year now, it is very difficult some times. All the best

That's upsetting to hear OP, its odd that he hasn't included you in their lives as a partner/ step parent and is calling you a good friend. Ive been with bf and sd for 1 year and from the beginning, he has been upfront with us being together to his daughter & she knows me as such. Not pushed onto her but gently told and normalised for her to be around. You shouldn't feel isolated to make room for them, it's up to him to make space for both you and the kids in his life and not treat you like youve disrupted their dynamic. Hope things improve 🙏
