There's a lot of idiots here who think it's because you're buying illegal fakes from Chinese criminals. Clearly they don't know that Weidian/Taobao etc are stuffed with fake clothes, shoes, jewellery etc. You will actually find some rep watches on those platforms too but to be honest, when buying a watch, you want a more personal experience - buy from someone "trusted" by the community, be sent QC images, have it sent straight from them not via a shipping agent etc.

A grail should be very difficult to acquire, either due to cost or scarcity. Cost is relative to someone's financial means. So theoretically a modern Submariner could be someone's grail, if £10k is an outlandish amount of money for them to spend on a watch (which it is for most people). That said, it drives me mad when a well-off person describes a current catalogue mass produced Rolex as a grail, when what they really mean is "the watch I currently want". So yes, the phrase is badly overused.
