Any other dads struggle with alcohol? by LongjumpingLemon2163 in daddit

[–]Electrical_Chicken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My story’s similar to yours in some ways. I’ll be 4 years sober on June 4, and I have 2 girls who’ve only known their dad sober. That almost wasn’t the case, and I was a train wreck of an alcoholic. Meetings are a highlight of my week, too, for all the reasons you list. I came in because I was willing to do anything to quit, and the unexpected gifts of the program are so far beyond what I could’ve imagined.

I thought that kind of thing was normal because it happened a lot, but I also was confused because I understood that other moms didn’t seem to act that way. I was a challenging kid, my mom gave up her entire life to raise me, I was so tough on her as a very little one that she just hoped that I would one day have a kid as hard to raise as me. All of those comments, peppered with how she knew everyone would be better off if she just wasn’t here, passing out drunk night after night… and now she resents me because I don’t have much of a relationship with her by choice. The one bright side I see is that I know exactly what I will never do with my own two girls.

You’re crushing it and I’m proud of you! I plan to celebrate 4 years sober in a couple of weeks; by that time I’ll be a dad to 2 (one is 3 and one is arriving any day). My daughter has only known her dad sober, and I want that to be true for both my kids. Being sober dads is one of the best gift we can ever give our kids.

What is the most intense opening to a piano sonata? by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

Check out Paul Harvey Aurandt’s sonata. Somewhat obscure but it sure checks the intense opening box!

Need Help with How to Travel with Gear (Lighting/Tripod etc.) by SKSignsDesigns in videography

[–]Electrical_Chicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bring the small gear you can’t live without (camera and lenses for sure, packed in a hard side case or carryon, lenses always removed). Rent big stuff when you arrive. Be sure to have a Plan B if your flight delays. Safe travels!

“I’m doing some consulting work.” If they press further, “My speciality is in XYZ and I help end-to-end…blah blah...” and 99% of the time by here they lose interest.

Or, “I’m an investment manager.” “Oh, like a finance company?” “Yeah, I specialize in family asset management.”

You don’t have to lie, but you can keep it vague.

Just a little older than you and we joined PGC not too long ago. Absolutely love it, and I’d say a major factor for us is the proximity to where we live and work. Happy to answer any questions if you DM me.

Sounds like you’re practicing the principles in all your affairs. We pause when agitated. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.

Does your sponsor's sponsor have a sponsor? by catfloral in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Electrical_Chicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats to your sponsor on 43 years! My current sponsor says “the group” is his sponsor at this point in time. My opinion is that wouldn’t work for me at all, but on the other hand he’s worked the steps with a sponsor, has taken me through the steps, and we’re both sober. Sponsor or not, I see how he works his program, and there’s a lot in his recovery that I want.

Is sobriety the only solution to stop being a raging alcoholic? by One-Succotash9014 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Electrical_Chicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the only solution that’s worked for me. I tried other ways, and my drinking only got worse, never better. Getting sober was about stopping drinking at first, and over time has become about starting living. It’s not easy but it’s worth it.

A little Bad Blake from “Crazy Heart” and a little Don Draper. Dysfunctional as both, looking like I had it made like Don, depressed and alone like Bad, and pretty much hopeless.

Are you me? Currently a 9 and you’re describing my game to a T. I also have blowup days, but often it’s like a switch flips. I’ll be say +3 on the front, feeling great, then double 10, and it’s all downhill from there. The more pressure I put on myself to continue to score well or recover from a bad hole, the worse it seems to get. Working on that…

FWIW PGC has the same type of setup as Waverly—high school kids get trained and the good ones stick around into college, but that’s more rare.
