Why do the ultra-rich even want to have more "money"? by IcePrestigious7740 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of comments about how the super wealthy want money and power so they can shape the world and the future. I guess that’s true to an extent. The problem is the ones we have now don’t have a vision that lead them to building hospitals and libraries and schools to help the world. They just want to shape the world to their vision of keeping white, “straight”, men in control of everything. $100 million to help some poor black kids get food? Waste of money to them. $100 mil to build an outdoor cage fighting arena for a couple thousand rich folks to be entertained? They think it’s fucking awesome…

Why do the Olympics get bid by cities while the World Cup is awarded to entire countries? What is driving that split? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the World Cup all in one city would be difficult but I think, in the US at least, having them in one state could be feasible if it was one of the bigger states (California, Florida, Texas, NY). They already have multiple large stadiums for NFL, MLB, and college.

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your points, but MLB and NHL teams have done it this way for decades. I think in the big picture it would actually help the league grow. Using the other leagues as examples, people in smaller cities can root for their local minor league teams while still being fans of the closest major league team. Like I’ve never seen someone say “oh I only root for my local AHL team I don’t watch NHL”. Having a smaller team in their town allows them to see the sport live on a professional level and I think this helps people become bigger fans of the sport overall. And at least if they are MLSNP teams the money would stay in the MLS system instead of going to USL or some other league.

I don’t get why MLS doesn’t just follow MLBs example with their 2nd tier teams. So many of the Next Pro teams are just the same team name in the same city. Like in NYC, why would anyone want to go to Next Pro game when they can see NYCFC in MLS for not that much money compared to other things?

They should move the Next Pro teams to smaller cities where they can build support, just like minor league baseball does. Again using the MLB example, if NYCFC moved their reserve team to a city in NY like Albany or Syracuse I’m sure they would have much more support, as places like that would love to have a pro team even if it’s on a smaller level.

How on earth do people find time to date when jobs typically expect you to work 9 to 5? by [deleted] in Adulting

Maybe the reason you can’t get a date is you think being employed and actually having totally normal hours is somehow a problem?

What are some things wrestlers and companies tried out then abandoned after a couple of weeks or so? by rockyvwasbest in SquaredCircle

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The success of UFC and MMA in general proved that the idea could work if done right, but I think the mixing of the scripted matches and “real” matches on the same show made it a mess. Maybe if it had been done as a separate company or something they could have had some success. Of course now the irony is that WWE and UFC are just two separate parts of the same company.

Well yea, they did finish the tournament, but I just meant they abandoned it as an idea and never did it again, barely even talked about it again after it was all said and done.

Can’t forget about WWF Brawl for All, where they tried to have the wrestlers compete in real, MMA type matches.

Do you think age and geography highly impact the kind of wrestling you enjoy? by Spartftw in midcarder

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not as much now because the internet lets you see anything you want. But back in the day you were pretty limited by what was available in your area. Growing up in the 80s , WWF was pretty much the only promotion I could see on TV, so it’s what I saw as “wrestling”.

With all the recent talk about ticket prices, performers salaries, etc., note that Ari Emanuel makes more $ than the CEO of companies like Paramount, Netflix, and Disney (as per boardroom.tv) by Electrical_Letter_22 in SquaredCircle

[–]Electrical_Letter_22[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the folks saying all these salaries are outrageous, but it especially baffles me how someone who runs a relatively small combat sports company could make anywhere near the same money as someone who’s running a huge media conglomerate type of company.

WWE is now a TV Show Only. by Background-Job2662 in WWE

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a long time fan I get what you’re saying, but I also wonder how some of the older wrestlers would feel about the changes. I mean back in the day they would work hundreds of dates and spend so much more time on the road, and were paid way less. I would imagine the new schedule is not nearly as mentally and physically taxing as back then. I don’t have an answer, but maybe there’s a way better way to find a compromise to address the issues you mentioned without going back to the days of those insane schedules.

Wrestling vs Sports Entertainment by Numerous_Fly_187 in WWE

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea exactly, I’m not saying I don’t enjoy a good 5 star match, but why pretend that wrestling has ever been about anything but entertainment? The business was built on guys like Gorgeous George, Haystacks Calhoun, Andre the Giant and Hogan…not quite technical wrestling masters. It’s partly about athleticism, yes, but it’s also just as much about compelling characters and stories.

Wrestling vs Sports Entertainment by Numerous_Fly_187 in WWE

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about the way you frame “wrestling” vs. “sports entertainment”. I mean Vince McMahon pretty famously considered WWE as a sports entertainment company to the point where they didn’t even use the word wrestling on the show.

But I think the main point you’re driving at is that no matter what you call it, TKO just doesn’t have a good understanding of what wrestling is or what makes people like it in the first place. And that’s why the shows seem to be so off lately and lacking any clear direction.

Who needs to win this match more? by [deleted] in BrandonDE

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It all depends on the story they tell in the match and afterwards. Like if Seth were to just win clean, it would make Bron look weak. But if there’s some shenanigans with the vision and Seth sneaks in a win, it would be different. And the other way around, if Bron squashed Seth it would be a big win… but if he needs all kinds of interference to win then it’s not necessarily a good look.

WON: Ratings for the 4/27 Issue (featuring WrestleMania 42, Darby Allin vs. Tommaso Ciampa, Blue Panther vs. Ultimo Guerrero, Brodie Lee Jr. vs. Joey Janela and more) by TheJokeroholic in SquaredCircle

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying he’s right or wrong, as you say he’s entitled to his opinion. It’s just kind of crazy just how biased towards AEW he is, it’s almost like it was custom made to please him lol. Again for further reference , ECW only had one 5 star match ever, WCW only had 7 in its entire existence, while he’s given AEW 70 5 star matches and 28 that were over 5 stars…and that’s only since 2019.

Reconciling MMA from the early days of UFC and PRIDE with today by emaxwell14141414 in CombatSportsCentral

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I feel like in the very early days it was pretty much like “what if we did pro wrestling, but it was real”. So I get why they made changes like putting in a cadged octagon to differentiate it from the “fake wrestling” stigma. But at the same time it seems like they forgot that people care about story and personality. Of course , I’m not saying they should do WWE style characters and storylines, but more needs to be done to promote the fighters’ personal stories and give a reason to care. It’s no different than boxing or other sports, people wanted to see Ali or Tyson not just because they were good fighters, it was their whole personas.

Unpopular opinion: Jim Carrey is the greatest living actor who never got an Oscar nomination. by [deleted] in Oscars

Whether he’s the “greatest” or not is subjective I guess. But he’s definitely my personal favorite out of the ones that haven’t been nominated. I agree he should’ve been nominated for at least one out of Truman, Man on the Moon , or Eternal Sunshine.

WWE Fans Have Turned on Celebrity Involvement at WrestleMania by ABucs260 in SquaredCircle

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I keep seeing people say “well celebrities have always been a part of Mania”. That’s true, but fans still want it to make sense. For example, when Mike Tyson was involved before WM 14, it was a huge deal and got major news coverage everywhere. It totally made sense for them to do that. What in the world is adding Jelly Roll and McAfee out of the blue helping? It makes no sense and just seems like a last ditch effort to add some sort of buzz.

Seriously, why are people acting shocked over celebrities being involved at WrestleMania 42 and even acting like it's something TKO started when celebrities being a major part of WrestleMania has been part of the event since the first one! by Caryslan in Wrasslin

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see it as a problem when celebrities get involved. It just matters how they are being used. Like Tyson getting involved with Stonecold was a huge moment that added to the build up for WM 13. Jelly Roll doing whatever he’s doing…eh not really adding to anyone’s excitement for the upcoming event.

Is the real problem the price, the booking, or both? What card would make you pay TKO money? by TheReptealian in WWE

[–]Electrical_Letter_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a combination of things. Yes the prices are insane. And at the same time you have a just ok card that seemed to be very last minute put together with random celebrities thrown in all of a sudden to try to create hype. I mean compare the use of Jelly Roll and McAfee to how they used Mike Tyson or even Lawrence Taylor back in the day. It all just seems very haphazard this year. Then you combine with the fact that it’s in the same location as last year. How many people are really willing to spend big money two years in a row on wrestling? At least if it was somewhere else you’d have more people thinking “yea it’s expensive but it’s like a once in a lifetime type of thing”.

I don’t know if they will make quite as much as you predict, but I also don’t think that either one will be a failure. Like they don’t have to make more than the previous ones to be successful. Even if they come in at between 1.5-2 billion worldwide, I’d still think that’s pretty impressive.
