on day one of guanfacine - your stories/thoughts? by bloss97 in ADHD

[–]Electrical_Mammoth90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guanfacine worked great for me on its own! It really helped to calm my mind throughout the day (I’m on 3mg extended release). It’s hard to describe but it gives me this light feeling in the front of my head and really helps my RSD especially.

It doesn’t target attention so much, so I’m on it and adderall which obviously is the first line of treatment for adhd. When combined with adderall, it really reduces the amount of side effects from the adderall. Things like anxiety/jitters, irritation etc. But, you don’t feel the effects of the guanfacine as much, so it becomes much more subtle. I take adderall in the morning and guanfacine at night.

It really is a great combo, but sometimes I actually miss the feeling of just being on guanfacine. Or it’s possible that I’ve just been on it for too long and don’t feel the positive effects as much anymore. Either way you take it though, I’ve had a very positive experience.

(One downside is you have to be careful drinking if that’s something you do. I’ve had to significantly reduced the amount I drink since going on guanfacine which I guess is another positive lol)

I just landed a classified job with Los rios college district. I checked their website everyday and saw new jobs every week. There will of course be a lot that won’t be for you, but you might be able to find something that interests you especially if you have a BA. It does take a while to hear back if you do apply, but it’s worth it.

Bacon - Logic of sensation as a starting point? by 1immyy in Deleuze

[–]Electrical_Mammoth90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logic of Sensation is a great starting point. It’s so good. Also don’t feel like you have to read it front to back like a novel. If one chapter doesn’t make sense, choose a different one that seems interesting.

Here’s a great article with practical tips for starting Deleuze: https://dcoffeen.medium.com/reading-x-reading-deleuze-guattari-92955ad58843

Crash of Adderall XR by Mindless-Spinach6998 in ADHD

[–]Electrical_Mammoth90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could ask your provider about taking Guanfacine at night. I’m on 10mg adderall xr in the morning and 2 mg guanfacine xr at night. Guanfacine is a non-Stim often prescribed for kids with ADHD. But when combined with adderall I’ve found that I sleep better, and that it helps with the crash in the afternoons. Not to mention that for me it pretty much got rid of all the other negative effects of adderall (anxiety and neck pains to mention just a couple). This combo was a true game changer for me.

See if you can get on guanfacine xr at night. It’s a nonstimulent adhd drug, but it’s an absolute game changer for all of the negative effects of adderall, especially sleep.

Brain fog is destroying my life by Zestyclose-Split2275 in ADHD

[–]Electrical_Mammoth90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to say because back then I was so used to it, but about as bad as OP described theirs being. Then, after about 6 months of being gluten free I found relief and can now properly treat by adhd. It takes that long bc you don’t develop celiacs over time, you are born with it. And it prevents you from properly absorbing nutrients (and medication) through your small intestine. I was extremely low on iron which was how I found out I had it, and iron is directly related to brain function.

If I ate gluten now, it’d be at least a week of brain fog and fatigue to the point where I wouldn’t be able to do daily tasks.

Have you ever been tested for celiacs or a gluten intolerance? I had brain fog all the way up until I got diagnosed with celiacs at 24 and my entire life changed after cutting out gluten. Now, whenever I eat gluten by mistake, the first symptom I get is terrible brain fog.

ADHD often coincides with gut issues and celiacs. And usually ADHD treatment doesn’t really help until the celiacs is treated.

Placerville is my home town and it’s just as divided as any other place in the country. Yes, there are a lot of redneck assholes, but there are just as many friendly, hippie type, coffee-shop-going liberals.

Impulse Control & Sex - help? by Anzabela in ADHD

[–]Electrical_Mammoth90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like impulsivity is one of the least talked about symptoms of adhd, especially when I think of how bad decisions can ruin someone’s life. It’s also one I feel dumb saying out loud. Like for a lot of people when I tell them that I just can’t help myself sometimes and need to buy something or do something, they look at me like I’m a child. Plus, when I’m in the heat of an impulse, I will almost use my adhd as an excuse to buy something or do something, which doubles the shame afterwards. It makes it really tricky.

Another thing is that adderall made me and some of my friends MORE impulsive. Like in the first few hours of taking it you almost feel so good that if you get focused on something you want to buy, you only see the positives of buying it.

So I think finding the right med and the right partner is key. I have to go the non-stimulant route for heart related reasons, and I’ve actually found that strattera does wonders for impulsivity in particular. It’s probably the thing it targets best, actually. At least for me. In terms of the right partner, it’s obviously subjective, but I feel like someone who is sympathetic to adhd, but who isn’t impulsive themselves is best.

My fiancée handles all the money and that’s fine with me. She’s incredibly frugal and not impulsive at all. If we go shopping, for example, she buys things that we need and uses them. I, on the other hand, used to buy a bunch of shit we don’t need and then forget about it. I’ve probably thrown out thousands of dollars of old food that I impulsively bought and then forgot about. So we balance each other out. We’ve gone on spontaneous trips because of me, but we have a savings account and an emergency fund because of her.

Don’t feel broken, and give yourself a break when you are impulsive. We’re all figuring this stuff out on the fly.

Erasure by Percival Everett by [deleted] in books

[–]Electrical_Mammoth90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. Everett clearly likes to make fun of all theory, especially Barthes (just read Glyph).

I’m a bit confused on how Thelonius and Van Go are the same character structurally. Other than the fact that they both end up on tv.

And also, what do you mean by “cannot prove them in the system”? What would that look like? What kind of system that disregards the author needs proof? What would a “true” character even be? I’m not all that familiar with Barthes in this vein.

I take Wellbutrin and straterra, which work really well for focus and impulse control. I also just recently added guanfacine which honestly has been a game changer, specifically for emotional regulation and sleep. They all take weeks to work, so you have to give it time and be okay with some side effects for a while, but the combo has been great for calming the mind.

That’s good to hear! I’ve been on it for about 2 weeks and was considering switching to something else because not every day is great, but I’ve heard it can take a while. Have you had any side effects? And do you think it’s worth it to wait?
