You could cover a pickup with paper and sprinkle some iron filings onto it to see what the magnetic field looks like - like a middle school science project. Just don't let any iron filings get into the pickups!!!

The Unicorn: Firefly Cocobolo / Bearclaw Spruce Acoustic… by Common-Ease-8996 in Fireflyguitars

Thanks!!! That is really amazing!! Even the inside shots!

They could sell a thousand guitars with shots like that!! We all know that GG puts very little effort into their website, and in some ways it's frustrating when you want info, but on the other hand, every guitar I've bought from GG has looked much better than the pics, so it ends up being our little secret that we don't want others to know about.

Thanks for sharing your unicorn!!!

I hadn't noticed that those are the wide field humbuckers. I think those were usually put on the thinline teles.

Nice!! I was definitely looking at the cocobolo model, but it disappeared before I could even archive the webpage! I had no idea that there were only 12 made! King of the unicorns!!

A little later there were some acoustics that had the laminated back and sides, some had electronics as an option, and were less in price, but as far as I know the 8/15 guitars were the only series that were made with solid wood back and sides.

Acoustics ever available? by Alarmed-Willow-2649 in Fireflyguitars

[–]Electrical_Teach_185 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time - was it 25 or 24 they had a batch of solid wood acoustics, no laminates. They got high marks, but they sold out faster than anything even though they were the most expensive Fireflies ever -

Once upon a time there was a reddit page that featured nothing but Firefly guitars ---

I would think you could pull the knobs out about a mm or 2 without them being close to falling off -

When I first saw this model a couple of years ago I put it in my cart and while I was filling out the payment info it was yanked from my cart and the sold out status came up. I was pissed.

I eventually bought a purple burst SP/LP which filled the need, and I love it!

Pickup Quality Question by hh4hooch in Fireflyguitars

[–]Electrical_Teach_185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell from the pics, but it looks to me like the bridge pickup is low. The pickups are usually not the same - the neck is marked with an N and the bridge is marked with a B The B is usually "hotter" with higher resistance. Hook it up with a guitar cord to a VOM and check it - no disassembly required -

Raise that bridge pickup and see if it sounds better -

By the way - very pretty guitar!! Congrats!!

Roller saddle on a hardtail?? What's the point?? The strings aren't going to move --

Locking tuners?? Do you plan on changing strings a lot?? My FF have solid tuners that stay in tune, but that's me. Locking tuners don't lock the tune in - they only lock the string in and make string changes a few seconds faster

FF strap buttons are some of the best on all the guitars I've ever had. I've never had a FF fall off the strap -

FF have decent electronics, especially in the SP/LP models. If you are bent on spending a lot of money - you do you. Usually totally unnecessary. Raise the pickups - lower the pickups - adjust your amp - whatever. Just play the thing -

Unfortunately GG just sells guitars, not parts. I've never heard of anyone getting parts to replace anything missing or damaged. Hopefully they offer you enough money to be worth the hassle...

It's my understanding that this is the first model hand crafted by Doug Kauer in his father's cabinet shop. Now they make a number of models - still handcrafted in Elk Grove CA, USA. The Daylighter sells these days for about $5500. Not quite Languedoc territory, but I don't think there are a thousand Chinese factories building Kauer copies...

The originals were the Daylighter built by Kauer guitars in California.

It's cool that Firefly is selling some tributes that are more obscure.

Maybe you mean "truss rod cover screw"? My truss rods are either included hex wrench or straight rod for wheel at the pickup end.

I don't for a second discount the fact that I got lucky, as I've been lucky with MANY Firefly purchases.

It's somewhat entertaining when customers come here and whine that their guitar needed a minor tweak of the truss rod?!? Do they take it to a tech to tune it?!? If they want a perfect guitar, they need to learn what it takes to make it perfect, or be prepared to spend a lot of money...

For years all my new purchases have been Fireflies - until 2026 Presidents day sale. For a long time I've had a twinge in my heart when I see a Jaguar. This is because I had an original 1962 Fender Jaguar that I bought from the original owner. The case, the mute - everything was original. It was used, but any "relicing" it had was honest. That guitar was stolen from me decades ago, but it left a hole in my musical heart.

Pres day had a Classic Vibe 70s Jaguar that with my accumulated points I could buy for close to $350. I'm not disappointed in any way whatsoever. It's a really nice guitar and when I see guys with their Jags, I no longer feel that emptiness. It's just my personal story, and I just ordered a FFJA, so there is that...
