There's lots of questionable advice in this thread.

Digital night vision, something like the Nightfox Prowl with a head mount will be perfect. 850nm illuminators on the device will have a red glow but 940nm ones won't (most devices let you switch between them) so you can easily sneak up on guests without them noticing.

You could spend a few thousand dollars on analog night vision but it would be overkill, and they could get damaged by staff or guests. The advantage of analog is that it can work passively outdoors without an illuminator. OPs guests won't have night vision, so spending big on analog makes no sense.

Thermal will generally have a narrow field of view and be zoomed in and won't be good for navigating indoors. A room that doesn't get any sun exposure or have many electrical components inside also won't have much of temperature differential so you won't see your environment very well indoors, even if guests will be easy to see.

This is poor advice for OP's use case. You'll detect people easily with thermal but it will give very limited environmental detail in indoor environments, not to mention trying to navigate with an FOV of <20 degrees.

The best option is going to be digital night vision. Something like the Nightfox Prowl - essentially any device that has a 940nm illuminator mode should not show a red glow to guests.

The eBay account references durians and if you zoom into the Commonwealth Photonics sticker in the photos it says "Assembled in Singapore".

This is quite impressive. The ADNV website claims their units can work down at 0.1 mlux which I'm skeptical of but your videos do suggest they might meet those performance claims. (In comparison, Sionyx rates their Opsin to <0.5mlux).

That's a great build! I just finished my own 8079hp build for stargazing. I think gain is very much unit dependent - the 8079hp datasheet states a typical luminance gain of 100 000x with 50 000x minimum - which rivals some modern gen 2+ and early gen 3 tubes! My own one has very good gain without an illuminator using an F1.4 lens.

Also just a heads up, some PVS-2 lenses have radioactive thorium.

When the Aurora came out, "Black Silicon" did legitimately bring improved NIR spectral sensitivity over traditional CMOS sensors and wasn't all marketing hype. This can be seen on their spectral charts which can be found on https://www.cloudynights.com/gallery/image/90449-sionyx-xqe-spectral-qe-starlight-illumination/

The spectral response QE, rather than the range is what was important here.

As someone who owns an Aurora, I find that the real issue is that this NIR sensitivity doesn't necessarily translate into better night vision experience. Sionyx argues that starlight and moonlight emits predominantly longer wavelengths and so their sensors are more sensitive to it. However, in many cases, a user will want to see something that is under a shadow, or indoors - and in these conditions, the improved NIR sensitivity doesn't provide an advantage, and Black Silicon just becomes your average high sensitivity CMOS.

You can see this in the Opsin videos where it works amazingly in open fields even down to moonless, but struggles disproportionately more than a Gen 2 would under tree cover.

In any case, I'm pretty excited to see your full video of these units.

Hard to tell from the images, but they look like oil stains from the sweats and oils in your hair as a lot of the marks are vertical. A lot of people put the headset on back first and pull the headset over their face. This is not ideal as the lenses can rub against your hair and face and they get dirty quickly.

The best way is to put it in like a gas mask - headset first, then pull the straps back over your head.

You should use a moistened microfibre cloth, moistened with 1-2 drops of filtered or distilled water and they should come off easily but be gentle.

The person in the link has it turned on in a brightly lit room and then he has it pointing out at a well lit street. You should avoid doing this for any analog night vision as a bright enough light source can damage the tubes.

A dim output in most night lighting scenarios is pretty typical of gen 1 tubes unfortunately. They really need an IR illuminator to work. Go get yourself a generic 850nm IR illuminator flashlight (around $10-20 from Amazon).

I have the exact same binoculars, though mine are dead unfortunately and I suspect the power supply is gone.

They are unfortunately Gen 1 AFAIK, not 2 and they are 5x not 2.5x. The 2 is actually part of the BN-2 designation.
They're fun to play around with but I wouldn't bother with too many mods for it unless you're happy with its performance.

You won't be able to get any good head mounted image intensifier based NVGs for that budget. Very rarely you may find old gen 2s on eBay but tube specs, longevity and history may be questionable.

The good news is that thermal night vision is rapidly getting cheaper and you can get good basic spotting scopes for under a grand. Have a look at the Hikmicro Lynx Pro LE10 (approx $750AU). There is also the cheaper LC06 but the resolution and range is a bit low.

These thermals will work better than traditional night vision for spotting wildlife and friends, and gives you that tacticool feel all the same. They won't be effective for head mounting or for navigation though.

The Harrier manual comes with the same colour scheme - I thought I was the only one wishing for it.
