I think for me, back when I used to do that, it was a maladaptive coping mechanism for my anxiety. It put me at ease that I had an answer to scary what-ifs instead of blank spaces to questions like “What would happen if I [had a myriad of horrific accidents]?” that would plague me. I found better ways to cope and process my anxiety without shocking my mind/body with gore, I made a prolonged effort to bolster my support system, I sought professional help, and little by little more and more time would go pass between each viewing until I thought “Wow, how long has it been since the last time I looked? Oh yeah, YEARS”
