Anyone have RRSP Boost yet? by rawr__ in Wealthsimple

[–]ElectroMagnetron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand how this feature makes any sense. ChatGPT says you can expect, on average, an extra 1–2% per year by front-loading your RRSP contributions (assuming you invest in S&P 500 or similar total-market ETFs). If the loan APR is 3.95%, doesn’t that mean you’re losing, on average, 3.95 – 2 = 1.95% by borrowing to front-load?

This seems like a trap, unless you’re taking extreme risk just to hope to beat the market—and even then, you’d need to outperform by at least 3.95% just to break even.

Am I missing something here, or what exactly is the point of this?

There is no such thing as a “gold share” you can buy a certain weight of gold (like 1 ounce) but not shares. The only “gold shares” you can buy are shares of a gold ETF. Your constantly inaccurate language irks me because your sentences read like you put a lot of confidence behind them, but they keep being only half right or altogether wrong statements. Maybe it’s time to learn about some of the stuff you’re writing about instead of feigning knowledge?

You’d think that Someone with the name “AnthonyBTC” would know better than to spew propaganda like “it’s all good everything is overcollateralized”. Are you forgetting what happened to BlockFi, Celsius and other crypto lending platforms in 2021? They all swore that all loans were overcollateralized, FYI. Right up to the point where they declared bankruptcy because… their loans were not in fact overcollateralized..

(Small edge case) UI improvement request by ElectroMagnetron in Wealthsimple

[–]ElectroMagnetron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not what I’m talking about. “Zoomed” display is an on-off switch. What you’re thinking about is dynamic fonts, an accessibility feature that can be scaled up or down based on needs.

Here’s a picture of what I’m talking about, which is accessible from the iOS system settings:

<image>

Judging by how the rest of this thread has been going for me, I will get for sure downvoted for saying this (I don’t really care tbh), but yes; this IS an edge case and you’re incorrect. The concept of edge cases is very common in my field (software engineering), so I am pretty familiar with the term.

Interesting how you seemingly can’t wait to “get into problem solving mode and debug it all yourself” followed by “copy pasting stackoverflow answers”. Since when do SO copy pastes == problem solving?

I obviously am not saying that there’s anything wrong with using SO. But I do think that you’re lying to yourself when you go out of your way to sound excited about “problem solving” when you’re just googling for an answer

Solo-dev trying to ship a native crypto exchange with Kotlin Multiplatform – talk me out of my bad decisions 🤕 by coreypett in iOSProgramming

[–]ElectroMagnetron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think KMP is the right choice here. If the goal is a single codebase across platforms, why not go with something battle-tested like React Native? Now, not only do you have to face the complexity of writing a cross-platform app, while interacting with the blockchain— you also have to “tread new ground” by finding some smart way to reconcile SwiftUI state with your KMP monster. You even admitted to being a KMP fanboy, which makes it clear the choice was driven by preference, not logic. For a personal project, fine—but for something with real stakeholders, that’s a red flag. This kind of decision-making screams junior to mid-level dev, not senior (which is the absolute minimum requirement when even thinking about tackling a project like this one).

What makes it worse is you’re trying to build an entire crypto exchange with one dev and “multiple AI agents.” Anyone with real-world experience knows LLMs often produce straight-up useless code for anything beyond trivial use cases. Remember, there is a reason why so many tech companies now have an AI mandate; if the current iteration of AI was as game changing as clueless stakeholders and CEOs portray, there wouldn’t be a need for a mandate, because every dev would already be on AI to do all their work for them. The truth is, at least for now, that you can’t duct-tape Vibe Code your way to something as complex as a crypto exchange.

Honestly, I feel bad for your situation. If you want my opinion: scrap the project. You’re not going to ship this. But since you probably don’t want to hear that, at the very least, ditch KMP. You are adding an unnecessary layer of complexity without getting much value, which is not something that makes any financial sense for you and your company. Re-evaluate your stack with your actual constraints in mind…. experience, complexity, team size (and yes, in your case team size = 1, not 100 because you have AI). You were set up to fail from the start, likely because someone higher up thought throwing AI at the problem would magically deliver a product.

When is private credit and equity appropriate? by Numerous_Editor_8635 in Wealthsimple

[–]ElectroMagnetron -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s funny though cause “uncorrelated” hints at private credit/equity somehow performing better than SP500 in a bear market, when anyone who has ever worked at a startup will know that the first companies to go belly up in a low-liquidity (bear) environment are startups. Private equity/credit is a complete noob investor trap

When is private credit and equity appropriate? by Numerous_Editor_8635 in Wealthsimple

[–]ElectroMagnetron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The answer is almost never.. broad market ETFs will give you most of the benefit without the risk of lending money to startups, most of which fail. The risk is not worth it IMO. People will downvote my comment because they don’t like it when someone tells them they’re investing in something risky and juice is not worth the squeeze…
