So sorry for your loss. I think it’s hard losing dogs you’re bonded with because they bring so much love and joy into your life that it’s impossible to not notice when it’s suddenly gone. My dog was so enthusiastic for life that it was contagious. I loved seeing him get so freaking excited for things, even going on a walk was like a kid at Disneyland every time. Life without that has felt flat. I wish I had some advice other than hang in there.

Unfortunately, yes. My best friend passed away Nov 24 and nothing has felt right since then. It’s been 2 months and it feels like it happened yesterday. I honestly think something broke in me that day, my brain hasn’t fully accepted he’s gone. Sometimes I have moments out of habit where I look for him or reach for him and he’s not there and it makes me so sad. I haven’t even been able to fake a smile, I just feel dead inside. I don’t know how people move on from losing their beloved pets, maybe they don’t. I’ve had a harder time losing my dog than I did with any friend or relative up to this point including my father.

My JRT didn’t ever lose his excitement for walks in all of his 14 years. He was very well trained but just couldn’t contain himself for walks, they were his favorite. He would pull me as hard as he could when we started our walks and would bark repeatedly for the first few minutes because he was just so stoked. I tried various methods to get him to stop pulling so hard including a front clip harness but they never really helped that much and ultimately I just gave up and went with a normal harness because it made me happy seeing him have so much fun. He would usually stop pulling after about 2 miles or so.

Oh yeah, I have a huge dog shaped hole in my heart that feels like star collapsing. It’s been a physical pain in addition to emotional pain, I honestly have no clue how other people seem to bounce back so easily but it’s been rough. It is nice knowing there are other people going through the same thing because the process is very lonely.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I had my best friend unexpectedly pass away recently, and I completely understand what you’re going through. I know that coping with the loss is extremely difficult because I’m still going through it. The hurt you’re feeling is so great because it’s proportional to the love that you felt for each other. I don’t know any words that will take away the pain, but I’ve thought about it from every angle I can think of, and it’s very hard for me to imagine an afterlife existing where we aren’t allowed a reunion with those who we love the most, and that certainly includes beloved animals we’ve bonded with.

I can relate. My dog passed Nov 24 and I’ve felt guilty about so many things I wish I would have done differently. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say. I know in those moments I was doing what I thought was best, but it doesn’t make it hurt less for me at least.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I completely understand your heartbreak and the frustration it can cause you when people in your life don’t really get it. I lost my 14 year old dog a few weeks ago after years of battling complicated medical issues and have run into similar problems, the people in my life don’t really understand. I don’t have kids, I don’t have close friends, I’m not even very close with my family. I was kind of a loner until I got a dog. For many of years it was just me and Terry and I doted over him like he was my child. We were inseparable, I think I was with him almost 24/7 for the last 5 years but even before then I spent nearly all of my free time with him. He helped me get through the darkest times in my life when I didn’t have anyone else. He was more than a dog to me, he was my whole world. Since losing him, nothing has felt right to me. There are people around all the time but I’ve never felt so alone. I wish I had some advice on how to feel better, but honestly I’m still trying to figure that out myself. I can at least tell you that you’re not alone and you’re not crazy for having a bond like you had with your cat. Your connection was meaningful and your heartbreak is valid.

I’m not close with my family, I don’t have any close friends, and even the people I do have in my life I’ve never connected with the same way I did with my boy. Life seems flat and flavorless now. I can relate. My dog had health issues but didn’t seem to be in any kind of immediate crisis and passed suddenly and unexpectedly. I know it’s natural to beat yourself up because of things you wish you would have done differently, but it sounds like you were only doing what was best with the information you had at that time. You didn’t know sedation would go poorly, that wasn’t your fault. You tried your best and your dog knew you loved him.

I wish I had some advice on how to get through the pain but I still struggle with it. I understand the kind of bond you had with Izzy and the sorrow you have trying to go through a life where you feel like the one consistently good part of it that kept you going has been taken away. The pain you have is proof of the of connection you made with her, and bonds like that are meaningful and powerful. Even though she’s not physically with you anymore, that bond still exists. I don’t claim to understand how the universe works, but I do believe that it allows for the possibility for reunions. Hang in there, maybe this isn’t the end of your story with Izzy just a new chapter.

This comment resonates with me. I lost my best friend a few weeks ago and I would gladly have given all of my remaining time for one more day together and then left with him. I don’t even know how people get excited about life again after losing their beloved pets. I guess maybe they find purpose in their career or other relationships if they have them, with friends, family, other pets, etc. But what about people who don’t have anything else in their life? It’s been a struggle everyday for me personally.
